I'm going to try to be the best with my favorites. I'm not using the same tough POKéMON as everyone else.

Which are your favorites?

I like bug pokemon, but they're pretty shit tier. Feels bad, man. I at least got a laugh out of seeing an anime clip of Ash getting his shit fucked by a Magikarp, that's what I imagine using weak pokemon to beat the games would actually look like in-universe. Too bad you can't use an actual Magikarp like that, but a Caterpie or something would be possible.

I beat pokemon silver recently (still training to fight red though), my hall of fame looks like this:
1st time:
ninetales
meganium
espeon
furret
quagsire
skarmory

2nd time:
furret
espeon
quagsire
meganium
skarmory

I love having a furret with the elemental punches, its my favorite normal type and can kick some ass with good type coverage.
azumarill is my favorite water type but quagsire was necessary if I wanted a chance without overleveling.

In gen II proper, Typhlosion is objectively the best starter. For one it has the best speed and special Attack of the 3. Also, Quilava is the earliest to evolve (you do have to wait for typhlosion longer, but the stat boost from Quilvas evolution is more welcome earlier on.)

On top of that, you will be supereffective against bug gym, Ice gym and Steel gym. You will be weak to Falkner spamming Mud Slap but thats why you catch a Pidgey or a hoothoot.
Feraligatr has a terrible learnset.

Typhlosion can also learn Thunderpunch in gen 2 to deal with water types (esp. useful in Stadium 2).
Meganium is not particularly useful for any of the gyms, and grass is just not-a-very-good type, generally.
And in gen II proper, Feraligatrs learnset is pretty bad, unless you use TMs.

That said, just go with your favorites.

>> No.6363473

It is good that in gen 2 they made the grass starter a pure-grass type, though.
Venusaur had Poison typing, and since in early gens there is basically no such thing as Poison-STAB (and basically nothing its good against), all the dual Poison typing did was make it weak to Psychic (and everyone had a Mewtwo, so...)

Bulbasaur shouldve been a pure grass type.
And Meganium can be good if you teach it Reflect and basically use it as a sponge / wall. On its own though, it doesnt pack much of a punch.
But again, follow Karens advice:
>Strong POKéMON. Weak POKéMON. That is only the selfish perception of people. Truly skilled Trainers should try to win with their favorites.

Use traded pokemon for boosted EXP, it adds on an extra 33% i think. In gen 2 onwards you can get lucky eggs to add an extra 33%. A traded monster holding a lucky egg zooms up in levels. Chansey holds it.

I recommend downloading the disassembly, making the changes you want, assembling the rom, and playing that. It feels fucking amazing, not gonna lie. I haven't actually done the exp hack yet, but I did a lot of research on it in preparation. I think some docs are on gamefaqs, others can be googled. If you can't manage to alter the exp formula or tables because you can't into asm, then what you can do at least is double every pokemon's base exp stat (although there is a maximum so it would be less effective the faster the pokemon levels in the vanilla game).

Grinding is fun in some choice games that make you want to become stronger at any price. Dragon Quest games are great at that. A good way to do this is to establish a cool asshole villain and then make him pretty damn fucking strong. You walk about, kill shit, find secrets, become stronger, buy better stuff and go test your might against the fucker to see if you're good enough to end him. And the story doesn't simulate this experience for you--you actually do it all on your own, mind you. That's what makes DQ so fun.

Then there are JRPGs where the story is about you getting strong enough, but it all happens in the script. When you get to a boss, you're either powerful jsut enough to beat it or are scripted to lose and the story continues. In this situation random encounters are just time wasters, because you don't have any inherent need for them and there's no sense of accomplishment, just tedium.

People who've only played the latter kind of JRPG are the ones who despise grinding. This kind of grinding is indeed despicable. But the former type is actually very fun. It's just preddy damn rare to see.
