can we discuss rail shooters? I don't know of any other than this

pic related, panzer dragoon zwei one of the most beautiful worlds i've been able to enter

Zwei's my favourite. Star Fox 64 is second best for me personally.

I've been quite into the genre a few years back The most interesting and original game I've found was Omega Boost - now that shit was scrolling a 3D fucking sphere, i.e. you move not on a 2D plane scrolling in 3D, but in a 3D sphere scrolling in 3D. GENIUS, even more interesting than what Panzer Dragoon did.

in b4 Gamespot posters who think you're talking about light-gun shooters.

Of all the shooters I've played on any sort of rails, this is probably my favorite. Macbeth might be the most rewarding challenge in this game, IMHO.

If you want some recommendations, Star Fox, the new Kid Icarus, Sin & Punishment, and Space Harrier are all varying levels of good.

The three most interesting ones are Panzer Dragoon (enemies attaking from all directions, full 360), Star Fox (you controll the scrolling speed) and Omega Boost (you move in a sphere instead of a 2d plane).

Sin & Punishment keeps turning into a shmup and even a hack'n'slash, it's a Treasure game, so no wonder it's weird. Space Harrier is vanilla.

I rather enjoyed Elemental Gearbolt, myself. I confess, I initially got it because it was published/made(?) by Working Designs, but it turned out to be a solid game. I think it was one of the few RPG/shooter hybrids, as well...on easy and normal, you could turn your score into health upgrades. And of course, let's not forget it's epic soundtrack...

ki kinda hardly counts because only 1/3 of the game is a rail shooter, with the rest being a third person action game on foot.

>> No.636676

Elemental Gearbolt is cool and was probably my first exposure to pantsushit, but it's a light-gun shooter, not a rail-shooter.

How to tell the genres apart:

1. In rail-shooters you can and must dodge: that is, you can actually move on a 2D plane (which is, in turn, auto-scrolling).

2. In Iight-gun shooters you must shoot before they shoot you and you can't move. Some cite Time Crisis as an example of a light-gun game where you can dodge; no, you can't, it's just invincibility toggle - you can't actually move on a plane, unlike real rail-shooters.

I.e., one is a paintball game, while the other is a shooting-range game. Completely different.

>> No.636692

>>636676
oh so Rez would technically be a light-gun

>> No.636835

>>636676

Wouldn't that make light gun shooters a sub-set of rail gun shooters, then? Dodging is done differently(as you say, shoot them before they shoot you), and while you can't auto move in some(Time Crisis, to again use some of your post), you can in others(Elemental Gearbolt...hell, I don't think you ever really stop moving in that one).

While you bring up some good points of extremes on both ends, I think EG falls more in a gray area bridging the divide.

Also, I think your analogy was a little whacked, too; better analogy would have been shooting range to tactical obstacle course.

Don't mean to come down on you, anon...just throwing out my two cents.

Yes. The character on the screen is just a visual effect. You do not control it, you can not move it, you can't do anything at all - it's not a playable entity.

>>636835
>sub-set of rail gun shooters
There's not such thing, so no.

Light-gun games are just that. You're on a shooting range with moving targets, and you do not control an entity at all - there is no player character. The timer runs out = you're hit. Unlike rail-shooters (Star Fox etc.), which have have actual collision detection with a controllable player character.

The backgrounds in light-gun games aren't levels, they're background movies on which targets are painted. Unlike, again, rail-shooters, which have actual navigatable levels in msot cases, with obstacles to move around and such.

>> No.636907

>>636835
Oh, and as for Elemental Gearbolt, it's a typical light-gun shooter. You must hit enemies before time runs out and that's it. There are no stages at all, just movies that play on the background. There are no player characters and there is no level design beside a sequence of targets; scrolling "stages" are just a visual effect that does not affect gameplay (outside of giving some mild hints as to where the enemy might come from).

Op clearly wanted a rail-shooter, since he had one as an example, too. Basically, he asked for more Panzer Dragoon.

To be honest, that's how I ended up researching the genre myself - I wanted more Panzer Dragoon, so I started looking for more games in the genre that did something interesting with their mechanic.
