Had no idea command would work on them. I think you'd be short on time on a level 1 party, though. Still have to keep reloading until the ankheg decides to melee you, but yeah - sure gives you pretty much unlimited time to club it to death.

Genuinely how I felt after rolling 18/00 with high stat pool for 3 of my chars for IWD1 for an hour lmao. But it was so worth it for that game with all that combat.

Refreshing to see that kind of twitchy gameplay, though. In fact I was always puzzled whenever ankhegs showed up in IWD games or BG2, they seemed so pointless somehow, and the armor out of their shell wasn't even good. I guess it was all a throwback to the original game. Especially with how they bug out and spawn 3 or more at a time if you start save scumming. Beats me if that was even intended and why it only happened after quicksaving next to them, but boy was it vexing.

And yeah he is good, only downside is that he cant use wands of heaven, but aside from that he's a great melee fighter who will reach fighter 7 and thus be as efficient as any other full class fighter in the game, except he also comes with cleric spells and particularly, buffs.
Give him Ashideena and he will kick some ass
Only downside is his mediocre dex, but you can give him gauntlet
And you can fix his suboptimal STR with the level 2 mage spell strength, and cast draw upon holy might in combat to get above 20

ha, i just remembered - this was my first experience with any sort of D&D related game, i think i must have been about 14 when i first played it, so it was pretty challenging at the time to get used to it (desu i generally just winged my way into finding the easiest, cheesiest possible solutions to problems, and to be fair while it wasn't really great from a pure beating the game fairly point of view I loved discovering how broken things like set snare/special snare were back when i first played the game)

anyway - i remember my older brother watching me play it for a little while when i was still raw, and my strategy was literally just to try to magic missile/fireball everything to death with edwin because for some reason direct damage always seemed more attractive to me, think i lacked the patience for indirect effects/most buffing and to point and click at anything that moved with a warrior heavy party. He ended up watching my first encounter with the shadow dragon, which went about as well as you could imagine (think it was a total party kill in <30 seconds, entire party got fucked up by fear effects/wing buffet and it just picked everyone off one by one) and him bursting out laughing

i have no idea how i managed to pretty much blag my way through the game the first time around.

Playing through Shadows of Amn again with ToB for the first time after installing it and single handedly ruining Bodhi and her entire lair with one or two planetar summons was great fun too

I'm genuinely curious what compels people to want to XP grind in a game that doles out:

- Thousands of XP for writing a spell
- Thousands of XP for disarming traps and opening locks
- Tens of thousands of XP for quests, sometimes even to each party member individually

On top of the XP for killing mobs via normal progression through the game. BG1 gives you dozens of free exploration areas and BG2 gives you dozens of quest leads the moment you leave Irenicus' dungeon. Yeslick is pretty good, I've been taking him along on my last BG1 run and been pretty satisfied with his performance. Fighter/cleric are obviously a top tier class all the way, especially with SCS and Icewind Dale spells.

Not only pure evil objectively exists in my classic OD&D (from which Faerun borrows tropes, sometimes unthinkingly), they speak unique languages. Lawfuls are born speaking a lawful language that is unteachable and unlearnable by anyone else etc.
And if YOU PERSONALLY don't want paladins like that in my game, just email me in advance and I'll just ask the paladin player to play a GLOG rat wizard or something instead, and remove all paladins from the hexcrawl. Problem solved, son.

All the fun of big fights in the streets of Athkatla without having to break side quests. You just need to be below 3 rep and groups of guards mixed with cowled wizards will appear at strategic points, and shadow thieves groups will appear in the docks instead. This particular one was unexpected, I got below 3 rep searching for Valygar and butchering a similar group in his house (with the tactics illusionist/thief in the docks upstairs, incredibly fun fight) and got ambushed in waukeens promenade afterwards. At first I actually was kind of miffed that it didn't have the old big blocky gray rock interface from the original, but it's not a dealbreaker for me. I have beat the original game in original form before, so it's not like I'm deprived of having experienced that.
There's definitely some things I don't like about EE overall, but it is what it is.

>>6368713
Who? Me? This is my second run now, I beat TOB like a week back or so, for the first time admittedly, but otherwise me and BG goes back decades. I remember the computer I had back when I first played it (at like maybe 6 or 7) actually wasn't powerful enough to really play the game, it had lots of slowdown, particularly in battle, and I tried to compensate for that by just pausing a lot, but it was kind of an uphill battle.
My mom could probably hear me slapping the spacebar repeatedly across the apartment when playing, lol.

Related to this, for those of you who played the originals in a different language, how was it? I remember that the Spanish version had fairly misleading spell descriptions, sometimes even cut due to their length. I overall liked the dubbing. I actually prefer dubbed Minsc, Viconia and Irenicus (feels bit more unstable than original) over English ones. I think that the dubbing made a good job overall getting right the style of voice. I especially liked the speech of the NPCs at the burning of Viconia event. They really gave their best. Shotouts to the gnolls and their great "muere escoria" (die scum).

>Dumdideldei, aus dir mach ich Brei! (Ogre)
BG1 dub used dialects from time to time which was hilarious although I remember some people hating it. The VA was professionally done and they had tons of fun with it.
Translation itself was bad in some places, especially the spell descriptions would often be just wrong so I got the feeling translators weren't familiar with d&d

>> No.6370163

>>6370142
Seems like the Spanish one then, great VA, subpar text translation due to lack of knowledge. Once I can fly back home (thanks Corona), I'll install the original one from the CDs and extract all sounds, as there's barely any in youtube. I also want to recheck some spell descriptions. I'm fairly sure some of them had big mistakes with turns/rounds. I had the AD&D manual back then and I feel that the terms were switched. Turns for the shorter ones (which still stands as a general term in table RPG) and Round for the longer one. Which led to a lot of confusion when buffing up.

BG2 wasn't dubbed in Russian back in the day (still haven't), but BG1 had a great dub by (techincally pirate) Fargus studio - prologue intro starts at around 3:00 if you want to check. They also did a fantastic job on translating and dubbing Planescape: Torment which still doesn't have an official Russian edition. They were so good, other pirates imitated their disk covers, it peaked in the early 00s when original studio tried to sue another group - that's right, pirates tried to sue pirates, shit didn't fly sadly.

The Polish version is a cult classic and employs stage and television actors. The localized "you must gather your party before venturing forth" message is a meme.
There is even this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0urSEmRkyCM
although the king of weird soundbite musical remixes in Poland is definitely Gothic.
The dubbing is generally better in 2 than in 1.

"Theory of mind refers to the ability to understand the desires, intentions and beliefs of others, and is a skill that develops between 3 and 5 years of age in typically developing children. This is test revision.

Relevance to autism:
Theory of mind is impaired in people with autism. One of the earliest tests for theory of mind is the false-belief test developed by Simon Baron-Cohen and Uta Frith1. In the classic version of the test, a little girl named Sally puts a ball into a basket and goes out for a walk. While she is away, another little girl named Anne takes the ball out of the basket and puts it into a box. When Sally comes back, she wants to play with the ball. Where, the children are asked, will Sally look for the ball? ‘In the box,’ children with autism answer, unable to imagine that Sally might be operating under a false belief.

In 1985, Baron-Cohen, Frith and Alan Leslie reported that children with autism systematically fail the false-belief test. Children with Down syndrome pass the test, despite having lower intelligence quotients than those with autism2. The researchers concluded that autism leads to a delay in the development of theory of mind, and that people with autism have difficulty understanding the mental states of others."

Your honesty and integrity have brought you to the attention of some of the keep's Great Readers, but as of yet none of them have had cause to call upon your services. While the citadel sees the passage of the occasional ne'er-do-well, its regimented atmosphere rarely needs to be purged of evil. Yeah it's a really tough customer especially on insane
Of course get all the defensive and offensive buffs you can think of, protection from every elements, magic energy, chaotic commands, death ward, emotion hope, courage, recitation, protection from evil, remove fear etc.
Spell immunity conjuration will make you immune to Bodhi's cloud of bats or something if you dont have a fire shield, the staff of fire you get in the Planar sphere can give a fire shield to anyone.
Arcane casters should be constantly under protection from magical weapons to avoid getting dispelled by the solars
Use the Bhaal powers you get during the previous phase
Don't use time stop unless you play solo or your party is dead
Use the good ol' project image + wish to spam it until you get a Rest wish before the final phase, and rebuff
You can also prepare some traps and summons, a planetar of course and it can be a good time to use Gate or something similar, just to have some good meatshields
Casting wish and hoping for a full Breach wish can work. Otherwise, have your designated dispeller under constant improved alacrity, he'll need it. It's obviously better if you have more than one.
Massive aoe like incendiary clouds can be a good idea but you'll have to be careful with all the solars trying to dispel you.

Of course use spell immunity abjuration too.
Invisibility, even Mislead, won't be that useful since I'm pretty sure half the enemies see through it, and can be downright dangerous.
If you have some useful consumables lying around get them ready, some potions like magic shielding or invulnerability can be useful especially for dispelled party members

> half the enemies see through it

But can the computer target invisible creatures with spells?
Seeing and hitting with weapons is one thing, but spell slinging is different.
It's what makes the Spell Immunity:Abjuration + Spell Immunity: Divination + Improved Invisibility combo Irenicus has going on such a cunty thing to do.

>> No.6372785

>>6372739
No they can't, but they can and will target you with secret words and co which go through SI:D and invisibility anyway
And most of the shit you'll have to watch for are AoE, there is no single target spell beyond secret words and co that will be a problem at this point.
And the solars will still attack you through mislead and si:d because they see through invisibility like Planetars do.

>> No.6372797

>>6372739
I mean the point is that you cant abuse mislead in this fight anyway, because even if you cast it in your pocket plane before the fight, there is just no way it will last until the moment you finally get to fight the 5. And if you cast it on this map the clone will disappear at the first true sight and you will be targettable even with si:d. Not that it matters anyway because again, all solars see through invisibility, Abazigal does too, and he's probably not the only one.

decided to try to play through IWD2 recently while on covid lockdown

have actually had quite a lot of fun with it so far (i think ive completed it before but only after cheesing my way through some of the encounters)

party is

>Cleric (Battle Priest of Tempus, that 1x a day +6 strength ability is great)
>Druid
>Half Orc Barbarian + 20 strength + two handed weapons
>Wizard
>Sorcerer, focus on spells that only affect single targets but scale decently like chromatic orb
>Rogue

Nothing wild. Feel like ive messed up the stat allocations a little bit but desu just going to max out the typical class essential attributes (int on the wizard, str on the barbarian, dex on the rogue etc) and having at least a 10 constitution on everyone has been enough to get through encounters pretty comfortably. Would be 100% fucked on hard mode i think.

Have only realised just how damn handy some of the spells are, idk if ive just been conditioned into thinking that most of the enemies will be able to resist a lot of what i throw at them but

>Blindness

50% miss chance is amazing if it lands, and should be useful for most of the game, pretty much a first pick for my sorcerer

>Ray of Enfeeblement

-15 strength is incredible and it actually works fairly well against some of the harder hitting enemies, inflicting a -5 to attack AND damage rolls is brilliant and the right spell focus makes it pretty hard for most enemies to save on

>Web + Entangle combo

desu just using Web and Entangle then picking enemies off with ranged weapons feels a bit cheesy but there's something about it that feels really satisfying to do

>focusing on putting a ridiculous amount of cleric, wizard and druid buffs on the barbarian alone - haste, protection from evil, bless, protection from arrows, bulls strength, cats grace, barkskin, certain available potions

can pretty much chop through the entire world with that sweet 20 strength as it is, the buffs are hilarious

The one aspect of IWD2 (actually much more than that) I didn't understand is why suddenly maxing charisma became a thing for Sorcerers according to the guide. Also, 3e feats are way confusing for the first time, but the amount of buffs available is hilariously fun. And especially that they don't expire before a good chunk of time passes.

Also, good luck, the Ice Temple and everything past it is a huge feat to patiently push through. Glad they managed to put in the Underdark throwback as well.

>> No.6373560

>>6373508

yeah, the feats have been a little bit tricky to choose from, have generally stuck to bolstering saving throws + large martial weapons on the barbarian and spell focus on the casters (transmutation in particular for the druid since it seems like a natural fit, pun not really intended but left in anyway, evocation for the wizard/sorcerer, necromancy on the cleric), weapon finesse was a blatantly obvious choice for the rogue too

thanks too. i cant even really remember the underdark part too well but iirc driders were a pain to deal with and there were bits where there were Duergar dug-in that were quite hard to break down, think they repeatedly fucked me up with crossbows hard until i figured out some way to get past them

Blackrazor
Criminally underrated weapon because the alternative seems so nice on surface, but it's an amazing weapon with incredibly useful on-hit effects that not only hold their own really well, but can also be used for a few hits then switched with other weapons which will greatly benefit from this easy way to reach 25 STR without having to build or wield Crom Faeyr. The potential haste can also save your ass when you get dispelled, and the level drain I think doesnt need any further explanation. It also look really fucking cool if you restore flaming sword effects with 1ppv4 or something else.
My other favourite underrated weapon is the Answerer, which guess what, works really well switched with Blackrazor. The 15%MR reduction on hit is great, but even better is the -2AC malus it inflicts on hit, allowing you to reach very high hit rate on high AC enemies with classes who have relatively low thac0, like mage/thieves or fighter dual classed relatively early.

Can't you level drain targets so hard that their items disintegrate? That seems like a huge turnoff for me.

>> No.6373854

Yeah you can
I mean its not exactly a big deal by this point, most creatures who will drop good items are bosses that are often immune to it, and quest items can't be disintegrated even if the rest of said creator's inventory is.
I used it a lot in several ToB playthroughs and never had an important item disintegrated because of it, just vendor trash

>> No.6373859

The other thing is that you won't level drain to death anything other than trash mobs, 15% chance of draining 4 level, anything that has anything interesting in their inventory will die of pure damage before running out of levels to drain in ToB.

Bioware really messed up with the Thief balance. In BG1, there are too many of them, but BG2 has:
* Yoshimo - lost mid-way.
* Nalia - Dual, not enough points to do anything
* Imoen - Comes late, has enough for traps and locks, but that's about it. Powerful character in any case.
* Jan Jansen - Great character, almost an auto-pick if it wasn't that he's very polarizing. I personally love him, but I would understand if someone would hate him.

Seems like the companion balance suffered from the decision of keeping Imoen alive. It doesn't make much sense to have two characters (Imoen and Nalia) which are basically the same.

Carsomyr is a MR tanking weapon with a dispel on-hit
Purifier+Belm is kinda neither here or there

Agreed, but they can reach high MR with the purifier, which is also a much less disputed weapon among your party than the DoE.
You can alternate both depending on the situation, not like high MR is wasted in ToB, far from it, especially if you hoarded potions of magic protection so far. But the main point is that the DoE will be useful to more party members than the Purifier, which is probably the second best defensive offhand in the game after the aforementioned flail while being restricted to paladins or UAI.

>> No.6378232

Insane damage in my experience isnt THAT limiting for party building once you find answers for the extra challenge it adds.
Obviously kinda forces to have an arcane frontline, but at the same time its not like it makes non arcane classes useless at all, just forces you to use them more carefully and recognize quickly when they can get permakilled or can't hold their place in front and move them out of the way or redeploy the entire party
But pure fighters and assorted classes will still be able to deal a lot of damage and be really useful
After all most of SoA doesnt have THAT many enemies who hit like trucks in melee, and it makes them a lot more interesting to fight.
As for BG1, it doesnt make that much of a difference honestly. Forces you to be extra careful and pretty much ensures that you will lose at least one party member to a backstab during your playthrough, but as long as it's not you, you're good (potions of invisibility will always be great)
Makes lightning bolts extremely dangerous and potions of absorption incredibly valuable both for lightning bolts and the handful of enemies who can wreck you with overwhelming crushing damage.
Personally what I really like about double damage is that it makes permakilled party members more common and forces you to reconsider your party composition during your playthrough.
At the end of the day, if you enjoy that aspect, go with insane damage, if you'd rather be somewhat sure to finish the game with the same party, go with normal damage.

Paladins and Rangers don't get bonus slots from high Wis, that's for clerics only.

Does Baldur's Gate II feel like Final Fantasy?

>> No.6379267

>>6379256
I don't know, but on a semi-related note, Chris Avellone personally noted that Final Fantasy 7 was very inspiring in many ways when creating Planescape: Torment, particularly the spell effects.and that each character had a distinct "personal" weapon type that they would default to. I'm guessing a lot of people at the time liked Final Fantasy in general, probably for a good resaon.

I know that FF12 is basically the most like BG2 because scripts are like gambits and the way combat performs. they should have sticked with it. Then again, most FF games are turn-based with combat extra screen.

Yeah, rush to it, I think it's speaking to koveras or some other dialogue that triggers the murder, and you can get there once without getting arrested and even speak to Ulraunt (who sadly has nothing interesting to say) and get Gorion's letter from his quarters rather than having it given by Tethoril

What's the best party comp for Icewind Dale? Thinking of giving it another go but got tired of reloading after two party members go down in first round of every combat. I am not very well versed in AD&D (started playing with 3.0).

>What's the actual appeal of rangers?
>only class that can "dual-wield" in vanilla IWD1 (by equipping a single weapon in the right hand the game gives Rangers only a bonus attack, simulating dual-wielding in an engine that didn't support it at the time)
>Ranger/Clerics have druid spells as well as Cleric spells in vanilla BG, BG2, and IWD (as well as EE with a single modification in a baldur.lua variable
>free stealth is sometimes useful
>BG2 gives you access to the Archer kit, which is very, very strong
Multiclass Fighter/Clerics don't get weapon grandmastery anyway, so the only reason you'd not roll a Ranger/Cleric over a multiclass Fighter/Cleric is if you wanted Dwarf saving throws.

all of them
that's why this combo was great
EE made it so that ranger/cleric only now gets druid spells up to level 3 or 4 but again this can be changed with changing a variable with the notepad

>> No.6381232

>>6381115
I just tried giving the character some levels to see how it works in action. At 5 mil XP (lv16 ranger) you only progress into level 4 druid spells, which pretty slow, but better than the nothing Fighter gets.

Explain this to me, though. Why the hell are the F/C chars capped to 2.5 attacks wielding the shield, but the C/R has it upped to 3.5 somehow WITH THE SHIELD OFF, whereas the F/C remains at 2.5 not wearing the shield. Am I missing something? I had no idea ranger would get this kind of boost over a fighter for no apparent reason

>> No.6381243

>>6381115
Wait, I guess that's the bonus attack, which I interpreted as thac0 for some reason. So, I suppose they revamped this in the EE into regular dual-wielding?

>> No.6381257

>>6381243
Yes, IWDEE is basically IWD-in-BG2-engine, which means everyone gets dual-wielding.
Kinda trivializes the game by a lot when people can dual-wield weapons of free action, and of course the kits are as broken as ever.
Although I'm okay with the EE, I still vastly prefer the original IWD.

>> No.6381280

>>6381257
I would probably agree. The encounters in IWD are rather mundane. Being able to roll your super tanky, dual-wielding F/M probably obliterates the balance even on HoF.

>> No.6381286

>>6381257
Sorcerers trivialize it even more, IWD games are notoriously stingy with spell scrolls so I wouldn't recommend running with more than one wizard in the original. EE though? 2 sorcerers who cherry-pick the best spells, buffs in particular (Emotion spells are busted af) make it a breeze.

>> No.6381293

>>6381286
EE actually adds bonus spell scrolls, too. I don't think Sorcerer is necessarily stronger than your typical cookie cutter F/M/Cs and shit, but yeah.

>> No.6381324

>>6381293
Not sure why you would compare a supporting Sorc to an F/M/C main char? An F/M/C main won't be wasting its turns to cast offensive spells or cleric buffs obviously.

>> No.6381326

>>6381324
I'm saying that if I wanted to completely break IWDEE I wouldn't necessarily include a Sorcerer in the lineup. It's still a rather martial-biased game with its reliance on hordes, very few reasons to use the dispelling library, and tons of equipment.
