And that's why you refuse to leave your mom's basement.

Mansion - courtyard - guardhouse - courtyard - mansion - courtyard - caves - labs
Not much backtracking, the courtyard only shows up so much since it connects to three major areas. It's also the smallest area in the game.

You literally have to do the mansion fucking twice. How is that not much backtracking? That's shitty gamedesign.

At the time there wasn't much to do, so keeping you busy could be appreciated

Because by the time you enter the mansion for the second time you face a much stronger new enemy and you enter new areas previously inaccessible while also having more of a reason to use your more powerful weapons. You also know the layout by that point and which doors are still locked.

"Thing I personally don't like" is not the definition of bad game design. By your metric Super Metroid is "shitty game design". Fucking zoomers, like seriously goddamn. CoD has completely and totally ruined an entire generation of gamers.

>defending being too cheap to develop new rooms and assets so they let you traverse already explored rooms and corridors to artificially lengthen gaming time
But I guess I'm wrong because I was called a buzzword.

You go to previously explored areas armed with better weapons to face stronger enemies and enter new areas in that old area. That is classic good game design and you could expect nothing less from Capcom in 1996.

Also Metroid is the absolute perfect example of a series that got zoomerfied.

To be fair, I think a more linear approach is better for a handheld game. Super has its flaws, too, there's a few points where the backtracking is kind of tedious (I remember getting stuck at the kung-fu pirates right before Ridley and having to go all the way back to Maridia to get the plasma beam, which is a hassle). But Other M has no excuse, I don't think it's as bad as people say it is but it's barely a Metroid game. It's been a while since I played them but the Prime series was pretty good, where does it fit on this chart?
