So what are the best looking Genesis games?

My vote goes to Lightening Force, with Sonic 3&K coming in a close second.

Dude. It's an absolute fact. I'm die hard Sega fan but, Christ, the reality is the SNES was capable of ten times more colors and able to display twice the amount at once. Rotate and scale sprites, too. We're talking graphics here, not gameplay.
SNES games chug and sputter like crazy, though. It didn't have the RAM to back up it's own potential.

SNES was CAPABLE of a higher resolution, much like how the PS2 was technically capable of 1080i and not even the Wii supported that resolution.

In practical terms virtually no games used SNES high resolution modes, while a LOT of games used the Genesis high resolution modes.

Here's what actually happened, SNES was TECHNICALLY capable of higher resolutions but you can count with your fingers how many actually used it. And to be honest, I'm not trying to start a graphics war here, I don't care, I still think SNES has better graphics capability, but don't spread that shit around that it has higher resolution.

That's the style. It's not supposed to be pseudo-realistic like so many games of the later era tried.

The art deco look was unique, whereas S3K went a little overboard with detail and naturalism imo.

>> No.643262

>>640935
If you look at a game that actually used the 512-wide mode, it's obvious why it is -- the graphical capabilities are extremely restricted in this mode. I think you can only use 16 colors or something.

That said, it sounds like this would still be a useful feature for computer-style RPGs that feature a text window during gameplay. Just switch graphics modes in the middle of the screen (like a lot of Mode 7 games did) and put a text window at the bottom. I wonder if anyone ever did that -- it would've been cool to see more CRPG-style games on consoles, that's for sure.

>> No.643408

Aside from the resolution thing, a lot of SNES fankids also believe that the SNES had better sprite capabilities. After all, it could put 128 on screen compared to the Genesis's 80, and sprite sizes went all the way up to 64x64 instead of 32x32. The thing is though, it's not even remotely possible to actually put 128 64x64 sprites on the screen. Hardware spec summaries always seem to leave out the most important sprite restriction, which is the number of sprite pixels that can be drawn per scanline. This is 320 pixels on the Genesis (or one screen width's worth) and 272 pixels on the SNES (or 1.06 screen widths). They're really more or less equal, with a slight advantage to the SNES in terms of screen widths or to the Genesis in terms of the absolute number of pixels. Also, the 64x64 sprites on the SNES are damn near unusable given this restriction.

By way of comparison, the NES and SMS could only do 64 sprite pixels per scanline, or a quarter of the screen width. The TG-16/PCE could do 256, or one screen's worth, while the Neo-Geo could do like 5 screen width's worth (though to be fair it had no background layers and had to use sprites for that).

Lots of RPGs and other text-heavy games (strategy, dating sims, etc.) on the SNES did exactly that. Most of the games in those genres were only released in Japan, though.

Here's an example of a SNES game where the entire game runs in high resolution, because they wanted to have high-resolution text but with Dragon Quest-style layered text windows instead of an entirely separate subscreen.

As you can see, it looks uglier than shit (though part of that is due to being a Nintendo Hokuto no Ken game--whatever developer was shitting them out couldn't into art to stop their own heads from exploding)

Probably Vectorman and Monster World 4

And if we're including the add-ons, definately Knuckles Chaotix

While the commercials for DKC back in the day may have boasted that the Genesis couldn't come close to that type of realism, Vectorman was probably the closest the system ever came to looking that good

The first game only uses it for the text window; the main gameplay area of the screen has normal resolution and thus is capable of typical SNES graphical quality. The graphics in that screenshot are a little underwhelming though, so I can understand if you're confused. Here's a better-looking one.
