Mine are definitely the openings from the first two Wild Arms games and Chrono Cross. So much nostalgia with these. Breath of Fire IV, FFVIII, the Tales series and Suikoden III had some really good ones as well

Lunar 2 takes the cake for me, but there have been many good ones.

I loved these so much I recently made a retrospective video about these openings discussing their general structure, visuals and song selection along with some of my favorite intros from that era. Basically just a nostalgic look back at them. I’m really not trying to be a self promoting douche (which is why I didn’t wanna start this thread posting the link if there was 0 interest) but if anyone is actually interested I can post a link. I can’t promise you’ll like my voice or audio style (little self conscious about this desu) but I think the editing/overall production quality is pretty good

Although FF6 is not my favourite jrpg the opening really stuck with me. When it first came out, and I played it, i had never seen an intro like this before. At least in a SNES game.

You're given prepackaged character dynamics through a literal movie before you have even had the chance to control your character. You'd think their relationship is relevant enough to the game storylines to justify conveying that through in-game storytelling

>> No.6354462

>>6354284
Not him but you just described the quintessential jrpg opening in a nutshell. Squall gets a scar on his face as the result of a fight with Seifer. Would you rather an FF2 style scene where you automatically lose the fight? Would that actually make it better? Or do you secretly just want to be able to grind so you can win and not have him scarred or some bullshit?

It was one of the better uses of Mode 7 in a non-racing game.
Seeing the magitek armor slowly march towards Narshe while the creative team credits roll was amazing. Snowy field is such a good piece of music.

>Would you rather an FF2 style scene where you automatically lose the fight?
Well, neither “loses” the fight, but having the storytelling happen in the gameplay layer so the player perceives he has some agency besides walking the characters to the next cinematic would be more interesting, yeah. FF2 is actually a good example: in less than 1 minute of gameplay you know the fundamentals about your enemy: they’re big, bad, and you will need to become more than you are now to face them.

As a N64 kid I was always jealous of the PlayStation FMVS.

I haven't seen them all but the chrono trigger was fucking awesome back in the day. I downloaded it off some fansite back in the day.

On hindsight seems silly, but they were a symbol of quality and production values at the time. It was not about whether adding them made the game better -which probably didn't- but the fact that the N64 was mostly denied the actual choice of having them or not.

>> No.6355802

>>6355795
Well the thing is PS1, baring some exceptions, didn't really run the FMV train into the station quite as badly as they would later on. Games were still largely games and yeah it was new enough to were seeing a castle rise out of the ground or a cool intro was really exciting.

Yes I'm sure people would have loved a pointless, drawn out, time wasting battle they can't even win instead of a gorgeous cinematic. You're the first person I've ever seen unironically defend unwinnable bossfights in JRPGs and suggest FF2 as a good example of anything.

The text crawl of coding ending with the barbarous names. the steady pulse of the bass and the droning inbetween. Brief flashes of people and all capped with the title kind of bleeding into focus. I love it.

Xenogears by a mile. The parts where the captain calls the engine room too late and realizes he's screwed and the little moment he takes for himself before activating the self destruct give me mallard mumps every time
