I want to play these beta levels so badly it hurts. Same with beta Mario 64, Zelda 64, beta Sonic 1, beta Mother 3 and beta Conker. These games seemed more magical and beautiful in their beta stage, don't you think?

There are people that claim the officially released game still has secret content (that they say are keeping to themselves) and by they I mean one guy. Not sure if his webpage is still online, but when I looked over it a few years ago (or more) he made it clear that he had access to areas of the game that no one but him and Nintendo had seen and also he confirmed it, supposedly. He gave almost no clues and I can only recall one and that is there's a secret area in the switch palace with the sniffits and metal Mario.

Imagine if you were given the Zelda 64/Mario 64/Mother 3 beta and all it was is just 10 different maps that were all used in the trailers already, none of them are connected, and there's nothing to any of them except being bland and small, therefore your "dream" of playing the betas lasts an hour at most.
Just be glad with what games you have. There's no point obsessing over what it could've been because your imagination runs wild.

On the other hand, sometimes you get the Pokemon 2 proto from Spaceworld 97, where an entire world map and roster of 100 new Pokemon got scrapped and redesigned before release, and even though there's not much in the way of text or in-game events you can still explore the whole game map.

you dont seem to understand the value/appeal of prototypes and early development nobody is looking for a brand new playable game, cut content, however small, is really cool. that's why everyone freaked out when we found the OOT debug rom with 2 beta levels. even though they were small rooms seen in the trailer, being able to play cut content has an appeal not everyone is able to share.
anyway, even though some betas only have a llimited amount of content playable through normal means, there are plenty of enthusiastic people willing to "sting" everything back together. alot of betas have code and content in their roms, just not implemented (or not implemented correctly). an example of this is the same zelda beta rom i mentioned earlier. those 2 beta rooms existed in the code, but only one was playable due to a header issue. so, someone altered the code, gave it the right header, and released a fixed version of the rom with the extra beta room playable.
>>6352604
doubt it. there are people who spend disturbing amounts of time looking through raw code to find anything out of the ordinary. if there was something that big rest assured it would have been found if it was part of the commercial release
>>6352428
really, the appeal to me is less about "playing" a beta like i would a normal game. to me, the aspect of discovering something genuinely rare and unseen is akin to finding an ancient warrior's sword out in the middle of a field where nobody has been before, or finding an old castle buried in the jungle. just discovering something rare and unknown is what's cool to me. discovery.

since the pokemon beta was leaked from spaceworld im still holding out hope that someone's gonna be able to snag a copy of mother 3. assemblergames recently closed down and i got a backup of it from someone there. in the backup was a secret forum called the 0th bit which is pretty much where the more trusted members would discuss purchases of betas that would immediately get shut down if given the attention on the regular forums. anyway, in one of the 0th bit threads was discussion about obtaining a copy of earthbound 64. either that or ura zelda, i dont remember, but nintendomad was in contact with a randnet employee before he passed. shame. i believe it.

Damn I can't find the version I played for Earthworm Jim 1 Genesis. I had a different unfinished version of the game where in the final level the little green monsters with lightning tongues AND the green bug platforms for the final queen fight weren't there. In that version you had hook claws to hook around the queen's boss battle, but that was shit because you couldn't shoot while grappling as we all know.

I only won that game because the queen insta dies if you jump into her mouth.

From the old uesp site in 2002:
>Check out the Official Morrowind Site for all sorts of of previews from the beta version of the game which many game sites have got their hands on...sounds just as good as we'd hoped.

If they "got their hands on" it, is it possible any of them... I dunno, made a copy? Archived it? I doubt it'd be a super fun experience but I'd love to play it and see how things have changed. Pic related is one screenshot of an older version.

Sage because not technically retro (though people often call Morrowind a "retro game" and make me feel old)

If you ask me the boss was deleted because
1) it didn't look very fun
2) at first in the video it's unclear to the player what he has to do. At the end, we can see that he managed to jump onto the back of sphynx, further making it pointless and still showing the player has no idea what the fuck he's supposed to do

I do wonder what it was like to work for big, popular gaming companies like Nintendo back then. Introducing new, exciting hardware, developing revolutionary games that take beloved franchises in exciting new directions, creating new franchises that would quickly explode into beloved cultural icons and remain so for years to come, and seeing people's curiosity and doubt quickly turn into heated excitement and anticipation as they try out your rough, early attempts at creating said things. Granted, most probably just felt worn out and looking forward to vacation like so many developers do today, but I guess the closest recent-ish thing that I kind of think of generating that same level of wonder is modern VR. Sure, I still love the new Zeldas and Marios and whatnot, but now they've become a given and whatever advancements made to their franchises won't ever reach the levels of transitioning to 3D and new stuff like Splatoon or ARMS will probably never reach the same widespread cultural relevancy as Pokemon.

Then again I'm over 30 and bitter, so no wonder I don't have that same sense of wonder.

"It was an open-plan office, but everybody had their own little cubicle. Depending on what projects they’re working on, they shift around. It is all open plan, in as much as you have rows of people sitting there working. But then where’s there a project going on, the core team would basically grab hold of these programmers and artists around them, and you’d get the Super Mario group expanding outwards from the centre."

http://pixelatron.com/blog/the-making-of-super-mario-64-full-giles-goddard-interview-ngc/

"It's such a clinical, rigid way of working. It amazes me they get so much creativity out of that place, with Zelda and Mario. You go there and it's white, it's clinical cubicles and bells ringing for lunch and for going home and that's it. How they get any creativity out of that place is beyond me. But they do do it."

A debug build of Master Quest was leaked near the end of 2005 and there were a few maps in this that weren't in any released versions of the game, two of which were shown during the earliest days of the A+B era.

It was interesting because room 121 won't load without a fix being applied to the ROM because it's in an old format, and the sound effects don't make sense depending on if you're running on the tiles or the carpet, showing just how old it is.

These two rooms, despite being from the same cut temple, are individual maps and have no loading or exit zones, and the doors are just for decoration. The blue warp in room 121 brings you outside Market, in front of the drawbridge.

I remember being young. Around 10 years old. My family and I went to cirtcuit city to pay off some crap. They had a little Nintendo 64 kiosk. I remember this one in particular had princess peach slide. There was a BIG red star before you started sliding. I remember being fixated on it so much. Mainly because I saw magazines talking about Mario 64 and none of them showed that. Even after my family got an N64 with Mario and I would go back, princess peach slide had that big red star. I never found it in the main game. I never knew why it was there. It is what stuck out the most. To this day, I don't know why it was there. I have NEVER found any information talking about it either.

The age should based on the game itself, not the system, because game developers will make videogames based on what they like and they recently played, so videogames released in proximity are more likely to feel similar than videogames on them same platform.

But that won't happen because vr only wants to discuss their childhood and Nintendo.

But apparently miyamoto just took a pen and paper and drew those wooden ones as a suggestion for a replacement for them.
