Has anyone got floppy disk images of the PC98 touhou games? They aren't in any of the usual archives. HDD images (.hdi) are no good to me, as I don't have any spare drives handy.

Also, PC98 thread. Post your favorite OPN/OPNA tunes

Not trying to turn this into a Touhou thread. but it still blows my mind how ZUN used be able to design very appealing characters in the PC-98 games, but switched over to the weird blobby style in the Windows games.

hdd images are the norm on some games specially touho and corpse party games they come on hdi and have to wonder what do you meant by "i don't have any spare drives" they are loaded on the emulator as a floppy disk as simple as that

Since it's PC-98 thread, just went through Lakers last night. It's pretty cool, even if it's not much of a challenge (Tuned Heart is way harder).
I launched the second game, CGs are a big step up, but these "interactive" sex scenes are boring AF. Just show us the CG without these damn menus... otherwise, equipement managing is pretty nice, the pacing is faster (both your HP and the enemy's drop way faster) and it seems harder with tighter MP management. Plus, it's playable even with very little knowledge of nihongo (still in the process of learning myself)
I can see why it's sort of a cult classic here in /vr/

4 on the PC-98 is my favorite, despite having the weakest music in the series, because it isn't designed to be playable only by autistic people.

What's kind of impressive is how Zun designed a game that scrolls smoothly on the PC-98. I suppose he did it by making the game with graphics that look like an early release NES game, but it is still impressive for the platform.

Because the script was lively and felt natural. The same can't be told about the Retronomicon stuff. Now, translating is difficult even when you are a fluent speaker, so some stuff might have been lost in translation. But who really cares about that ? It's made by people who want the game avaliable for others to enjoy them. The hacking is really top-notch (again, compare it to Retronomicon's Night Slave - no a single graphic object was edited) and the game plays like an official release. If you're really picky about accuracy, just play it in Japanese.
I still enjoy more the english version of Tuned Heart than the atrocious Megatech Software or Working Designs stuff, not the mention the horribly mangled and heavily censored Engrish of Final Fantasy VII.

There's a difference between "complete rewrite" and "some errors/missed stuff.
I'm not OK with complete rewrites, specially when they just betray the original intent. Take Knights of Xentar for instance : the original game is goofy, but the english translation is just bad toilet humor.
The tone of Tuned Heart "feels" right. There may be some errors, it has already discussed here ; but it's not a "complete rewrite".

The Retronomicon stuff was on a whole other level. Obaba refering herself as an eagle in DK1 was almost hilarious. I'm in position to enjoy a game with a nice, lively script that makes sense. If you really feel the games can't be enjoyed with it, so be it, don't play them and stick to the original versions.
Fan translations are free most of the time (even Retronomicon had a Patreon, but gave all his stuff for free) so nobody's hurt in the process anyway.
And when it comes to judgin stuff, I may just be a beginner in Japanese but I speak three languages fluently and believe me, I've seen much worse stuff, even in book translations by established publishers. When something is translated without any clue of the context, it really shows. And I honestly don't think it's the case for Tuned Heart. Sure, it's just based on my feeling when reading through the script ; but I really enjoyed playing through the game and for that I'm grateful to the translation team.

In Lakers 2 Chapter 7, you have a map with only her and Akira, facing something like 16 ennemies, including 2 bosses, without the rest of the squad. You have to heal constantly, and call for new equipement to replace destroyed one very frequently, missing a full turn each time, and allowing the enemy to anally rape you in the process. I almost shed tears of blood on this one (and I've finished almost all retro Fire Emblem games, plus Shining Force 3). But you have 2 h-scenes right after that, so I guess that makes it for it.

Thanks Anon, I'll check it out.

Just finished Lakers II. Turns out that once you gaon a few levels, the game becomes way easier. Last map was a little challenging, but nothing like fucking chapter 7.
I launched the last game but it plays more like a mix of Dokyuusei and Sakura Wars than a real srpg. Plus the new art is a mixed bag for me. Maybe I'll return to it later, but for the moment I'll move on to other stuff.

There's no real difference other than using IDE for hard drives and a few other minor things that don't affect game compatibility. The PC-98 version of Windows 95 will run just fine on a 9801 as long as it has a 32-bit CPU and sufficient RAM.

Need help identifying a game.
It's a hentai RPG, MC is a girl accompanied by 3 robots.
I think the gameplay is turn based, you throw a dice and move based on the number you get.
Map is like a board game (similar to sugoroku or snake & ladder).

Innocent Tour sure is gorgeous but gets tedious after a while, imo. Each stage can take more than an hour so I only did one playthrough with the elf.

Each MC has their own story and the other 2 serve as adversaries in the board game part. You have to reach the end before them while using spells to hinder them/speed yourself up. Along the path there are monsters you fight in RPG fashion.

About Pretty Monsters, I should have added it's a Windows game that came in 2001 so not really PC-98 related.
>So Nampurrow & Sylph Works only released one game then disappeared?
Looks like Sylph Works published a bunch of other title, but it was Nampurrow's last game.
