All memes aside, how would you rate the original Tamagotchi strictly as a video game, specifically a videogame from the 'life sim' genre? It remains one of the best-selling life sims of all time, after all.

I would rate the original model a 6/10. It gets boring quickly because of the limited games limited amount of different creatures you can raise. The tamagotchi connections are when they started to have more replay value, especially the V2 with the shop and different items you can get.
I think you should keep in mind these weren't really meant as "video games" instead as virtual pets, something you take care of in the background while going on with your life.

I had a Gigapet. But this belongs on /r/Tamagotchi.

Specifically in that category it would rate pretty low, since a Sim's quality is in the quantity of variables and flexibility of outcome.

It's barely a game at all, as success comes merely from the amount of time invested and there's no skill involved just like in a jRPG

Considering they made actual video game adaptations of it (though they don't really feel as enjoyable as playing with the real thing desu), I'd say Tamagotchis were a fine way to kill time.

It was groundbreaking because it's always on and can require care at any time. Other than that it's very standard but life sims really only need one little hook to be breakout successes.

Which was one the original? Where do you start if you want to know about all the historical tamagotchis?

Play the Game Boy Color version if you want something that accurately recreates the original game but you'll miss out on the real-time care element (the Japanese v2 has a battery and speaker in the cartridge). There's a modern Android app but it sounds like it's currently having some technical problems.

What's a good version if I want to play it like it was in the 90s? Some extra features would be nice if they fit in.

Tamagotchi Connection V2 is the best of the oldschool feeling ones imo.

In 2018 Bandai released a 20 year anniversary edition of the original Tamagotchi, that's identical to the original Tama as far as I can tell.

I loved my Tamagotchi. :( I loved all my vpets, I miss them....

How come you don't have them anymore?

Seeing this thread made me remember mine as well. I think it was most likely a bootleg (I grew up in a second-world shithole). It looked like the original one (OP's pic), but it was white and had no egg patterns on it, with pink-ish buttons. The pet itself looked like a chick when it was young, and grew into something that looked like a platypus. When it went to sleep, the system was displaying a barn with closed doors. Anyone had something similar?

I tried an android app reproduction of the dinosaur ripoff, because I missed out on the fad as a child. Got boring and pointless really quickly. Would be much better if they involved the digipet in many activities, like exercise apps and good videogames. I know modern tamagochi has games, but they're boring and don't involve the pet. They're just things that exist in the background pointlessly, and you don't really interact with them.
Even just bringing in elements from pokemon would be a huge improvement, because it would add some purpose or meaning to their existence.
Dwarf fortress is much better as a life sim. Characters have personalities, likes, dislikes, autonomy, social life, jobs, possessions, threats to life, living space, extended family, long term development of skills and physique. Perhaps most importantly, they're living in a fun videogame, and their wellbeing, reproduction, and development are directly relevant to the gameplay.
