Guys let's imagine 800 years have passed and this board is still around. Will PS2 be considered retro by then?

>> No.6343249

I agree but whatever, zoomers already complain enough.

they look like retro consoles......and they play retro games......are you sure??

>> No.6343256

Retro isn't a concept or an "era" of game design, it's just a period of time which extends forward as we move further into the future. It's not like the "Romantic" or "Classical" period of video games which has fixed cutoff dates.

Dictionary definitions of "retro":

>1. retroactive

>2. of or designating the style of an earlier time

Retro is just old, however you care to define "old". It's not a singular aesthetic, style, or moment in time. Two totally different-looking things can be retro, as anyone on this board knows.

>>6343274
your definition say "style" the game styles on ps2 and foward is mostly different from PS1 and prior.

>> No.6343292

>>6343284

"The style of an earlier time" can be literally anything. It can be disco, medieval, punk, Victorian, or Mongol Empire.

If this board were called "Pre-3D Games" or "Golden Era of Gaming" or "Games Gens 1-4" or something, you'd have a point.

>This board is for the discussion of classic, or "retro" games. Retro gaming means consoles, computer games, arcade games (including pinball) and any other forms of video games on platforms launched in 1999 and earlier.

i personally don't have a full opinion on what should be regarded retro or not because i am aware, that 90% of the debate is autistic shitposting but while i have understanding, that to some people dreamcast hardly makes the cut and anything afterwards definitely doesn't, i substantially agree with you

hey it’s the same excuse that gets used when people ask why we can’t discuss 6th gen here, even though 6th is retro everywhere else, funny how anons only like the rules when the subject of 6th gen comes up, anons need to make up their mind already

I think they left the definition intentionally vague so that it could be updated over the years. I'm sure 6th gen will be considered retro someday but not yet.

snes/genesis aren't retro either

it's crazy to think, but we've already reached a point where there are people old enough to post on /v/ that have never played a gen 6 console, and maybe even skipped gen 7. I've seen legit nostalgia posts for shit like modern warfare 2.

which doesn't seem to happen, which divides people into those, who would like to add 6th gen because to them it's (1) about time and (2) more content to a slow and redundant board and those who don't, because they (1) fear /v/ 2.0 (2) have their own opinion on what is retro and what not based on sometimes more, sometimes less understandable parameters and everybody who disagrees is a retarded zoomer faggot, no matter his age. in a nutshell, there are more arguments to both sides but it's quite a tedious debate tbqdesu

And what's the definition of "Classic"?

>> No.6343434

>>6343372
as an 18 year old, no fucking way did anyone skip 7th gen at this age. although a select few probably havent touched gen 6 (excl. those who were never console gamers in the first place)

as for what is and is not "retro" the best definition ive found is that its dependent on the actual game design trends for whatever system/time period and not merely What Year It Is. 6th gen isnt/wont be retro because its the generation where the west (and capitalism) started to dominate game development and it seriously shifted things away from things people on here care about... yet there are numerous exceptions. and it could be argued that the GBA, with any of its important games being developed in the direct tradition of 2d material from gens before, is retro for this same reason.
