It has to do with what features of an older game people feel have become outdated and which features have become obsolete. The more features of a game people feel have merely become outdated, the more people will likely say that that game has aged well. On the other hand, the more features of a game people feel have become obsolete, the more people will likely say that a game has aged poorly. It's all very subjective.

You can still have fun with in a videogame even if you think it might of not aged well.
Because the reason the that Tomb Raider until the angel of darkness had tank controls is because the games developed for the Saturn and the playstation and the Standard SKU of the Saturn didn't have an analog stick.

Perhaps bin/cue isn't the way.

Was the first on the PSX? Oh no, nevermind me. I shouldn't have downloaded the PSX anyway.

I wonder if pirategay has that OP? Actually I never try such things as PC games are always XD in my face more often than even emulated games when you have no real CD to use. Complications happen.

It's a false dichotomy, as you are creating only two options: the game standing test of time or being bad.
The game doesn't stand the test of time, because it was obsolete by the time TR2 premiered 23 years ago. Doesn't mean it's bad nor that it wasn't ground-breaking.

I think it's the sense of complete isolation. Tomb Raider oozes the feeling of being alone in some lonely, forgotten ruin somewhere.

The sequel kills the feeling by giving you city levels and throwing a million fucking human enemies everywhere. We didn't get that specific type of game again until The Last Revelation.

Media not aging well have nothing to do with its quality. RoboCop is a film that didn't age well and it is still great. 95% of movies made before the 60s didn't age well and there are still masterpieces there. Any art made before the 20th century didn't age well for our modern times and there are still masterpieces there as well. I don't know why you guys are so obsessed with "aging" in a fucking RETRO video game board. Aging is part of the aesthetics of retro.

No. It lacks movesets (like crawling) and the famous signature ponytail that TR2 on out have.

Plus let's not forget how much of the game such as drops are 2-D sprites inserted into a 3-D environment. That problem got fixed a little in TR2, but wasn't fully fixed until TR3.

>running with Proton, game crashes after opening cutscene
>realize using Proton to run Windows DOSBox is stupidly convoluted
>install Boxtron to make Steam run the game in Linux DOSBox
>random key-up events cause me to stop running; find out it's a known DOSBox bug
>install dosbox-staging to fix key-up bug and other bullshit fixed

The only problem I have now is little graphics glitches, where textures incorrectly appear on top of others at certain angles, like what you can see in my image, in the bottom left corner of the raised platform where part of the floor behind it is showing. I don't know if this is a DOSBox bug, or just a bug in the game's software rendering.

Or, at least, I assume this is software rendering. The config file in the blue terminal is, for some reason, auto-generated by Boxtron every time the game runs, so I can't change it. However, I should be able to override anything in the other config file seen in the green terminal. Boxtron auto-generated that one too, but it doesn't remake it every time. What's weird is that Boxtron seems to have copied "scaler=hardware2x" from the Windows DOSBox config file that came with Steam, but then commented it out, so I guess it's either not a valid parameter for Linux DOSBox or wouldn't work for some other reason.

The latter. While the visuals (though I like them) are dated, you quickly tune that out.

What you can't tune out is the atmosphere; it's still there in spades. Play it or watch an LP and tell me you didn't get at least a bit spooked going under the Sphinx, in Natla's mines or exploring Atlantis.

Because Lara was such a phenomenon, how good the original game was is almost always forgotten.

Arguably 4, however it's very obtuse in places and might be a bit of a turnoff for a new player. If you're only going to play one Tomb Raider I'd say play 1. 2 is really good but the first half is plauged by city levels, personally I think 3 has some of the highest highs (not a sentiment many people share) but also some of the lowest lows, with high, almost unfair at times, difficulty spikes. 5 is infamous for being a cheap cash grab the devs didn't want to make and it kinda shows, the last level is also notoriously glitchy, however it's not awful if you need a Tomb Raider fix.

I think it worked out of the box when I tried running it on Windows. The Steam version just runs the game in DOSBox so it's really a matter of whether they set up the DOSBox config correctly.

The PC Gaming Wiki article has a handful of unofficial patches, etc., some of which might be considered essential, so I don't know if just playing the Steam version out of the box is really the recommended way to go.

So I tried playing TR1 from this link:
>>6334565

and the cutscene that's supposed to play at the end of the first level (tomb of whatshisname) doesn't play and I'm instead dropped in the beginning of the section before. That is, it's impossible to finish the level. I tried googling and haven't found anyone with the same issue.

I assumed at first that the cutscene videos can't be found but it appears at least that dosbox is mounting the cd properly.

Any ideas?

No offense to the polish aragorn tomb raider dumping guy personally, but his installs are a bit crappy (tr2 doesnt even have the .exe installer, and tr1 is apparantly bugged).

Got three solutions to your problem:

1. Skip the level by an in-game cheat, by doing as follows:

Make one step forward (walking, not running!), then one backwards, then followed (without pause) by making 3 full 360 degrees circles to the right, and jump forward, this will skip the level.

2. Try making an empty .txt file in the FMV folder, name it exactly as the real .fmv cutscene giving trouble, and then change it into an .RPL file, this will overwrite the faulty FMV.

3. Or use this dospack which has TR1 as well, works fine for me:
