I'm saving up so I can buy another old console, and the Sega Master System is on my horizon

Any recommendations?

>Sonic 1 & 2
Really fun, completely different to the Megadrive games, with sick soundtracks - the first was done by Yuzo Koshiro. Inexpensive too.

>The Ninja
Vertical run'n'gun that's hugely satisfying to play, and has quite a unique feudal Japan setting. It costs literal pennies to buy - hidden-in-plain-sight gem.

>R-Type
Great conversion, looks, sounds and plays superbly, probably the best original R-Type experience you can get without having to spend big.

>Wonder Boy 3
Essential. There's a PS4/Switch remake, but nothing beats the atmosphere of the original. Brilliant intro, and it's amazing just how much they managed to cram into an SMS cartridge.

>Phantasy Star
Still holds up REALLY well, looks and sounds great (3D dungeons!) and a real kick in the pants if you're used to modern RPGs. A bit expensive, but an original cartridge usually has old saved games, which is oddly touching - mine had one just before the last boss, and another where they had someone got lost halfway through the game with barely any equipment.

>Master of Darkness
A Castlevania-style game, it trades classic monsters for a Victorian occult setting, with Jack the Ripper, Ouiji boards and a downright unnerving atmosphere. The soundtrack is unsettling, and the second level, with juddering living waxworks, poltergeist rooms and a possessed-woman boss battle, gave me nightmares as a kid. Brilliant.

>Castle of Illusion
Looks & sounds sweet, but it's a tough challenge with really satisfying physics. Genuinely charming with just a hint of eeriness, it's actually better than the Megadrive version.

>Lucky Dime Caper
While it's not quite as good as Castle of Illusion, it still plays well, and looks great. Perfectly captures the spirit of the Donald Duck comics (Donald is greedy but caring, Scrooge sees his nephews kidnapped and cares more about his own dime!), though maybe mute the soundtrack.

>Asterix
As other anons have said, this is a must have, especially if you enjoyed the comics. The sprite work is beautiful, and it plays really well. It just oozes character, and being able to switch between Asterix and Obelix (between levels!) is so good.

>Sagaia (Darius 2)
Really decent arcade conversion, somehow plays better than the Megadrive version. Looks and sounds suprisingly good, and fits the iconic bosses & choice of routes in there without too much compromise.

>Golden Axe Warrior
If you can find it for a decent price, get it. The presentation in particular is top tier. It's a classic end-of-system game.

If you want something different speedball and speedball 2 are worth looking into, i believe they are also multiplayer. Basketball nightmare is a unique game i dont think it was released in north america.

If you can find the lightgun controller then Ganster Town is probably the best game for it.

Phantasy Star, Ys.

Not a ton of great games (in the States, at least) for the SMS.

Alex Kidd, and the Sonic game if you can find a copy affordably (tip: import from europe and let the collectorfags have their sticker).

I bought an SMS solely for Phantasy Star, myself. I'm sure there are other games I can get for it that I'd enjoy, but with how cheap they can be it was worth it just for that game.
(before someone says anything about the Power Base Converter: not 100% compatible (R-type), and costs about as much as an SMS.)

Have fun with the soullessness that costs as much as an SMS and isn't 100% compatible.
Also the V7040 encoder in the early SMS seems to make better looking composite than the CXA1145. I use RGB, but it's worth noting.

Common games are like $10-15 dollars rarer games are like $50.

I use flash carts on my NES and genesis and N64.

ctrl+f ghouls/ no hits found.

For shame. Ghouls n' Ghosts is a must play, even if it's a weird version, it's still a lot of fun and has decent graphics for being a downgrade from 16 bit.

>> No.6337920

>>6336501
No shame. It's redundant. The SGX and Genesis versions shit all over it. This list >>6334276 is half decent because it doesn't seem to have any inferior conversions, save Wonderboy (and that's debatable; that version has extra levels). Master System Ghouls n' Ghosts offers nothing new.
