This anon makes some valid points although I don't agree with them all like his opinion on the weapon's sounding shitty. He also left some others out like how the mansion isn't as colorful as the original, which I thought fit the whole atmosphere of the original game very well. The remake mansion is more like a stereotypical spooky mansion and it actually clashes with the logic of the game such as candles still being lit months after they all turned zombie. I also agree with the Lisa thing. She would make more sense in RE 4 or 5. Not the first game. Its also needless filler imo like I've seen mentioned before. Lastly, they should have included shit from the Saturn version like those Tic enemies that replace Hunters and expanded them into something more unique.

Overall the game is still great though and I'd probably put it equal with the original or maybe favor remake a bit more simply because I think it plays better than the PS1 original and has other neat things like the crimson guys.

>critical headshots with a handgun make the initial hour of the game easy as hell
It's random, though. I'm sure there's some way to safely try for headshots without chewing through ammo, but I never found it. Found REmake much harder than the OG.

Not that either is particularly hard after you've scraped the ammo/fuel to clear out those like 3 hallways you need to travel through more than once without being able to safely avoid enemies.

What's the best way to play original nonremake RE1 these days? I feel like replaying it after Im done with R3MAKE. I didn't find any seamless hd or anything like those ai upscale patches for 2,3 and CV. Is there a sourcenext version for 1? And possibly a translation/fix patcfh?

I guess it makes more sense to include them? There are a few times it can be a crutch but if I were in that situation I would use every tool at my disposal to keep a zombie from taking a bite out of me. Its just more item management.

Defensive items don't take regular inventory space, you can have an endless amount of them, what are you on about?

>critical headshots with a handgun make the initial hour of the game easy as hell (OG RE didnt have this, it was only added with directors cut)
That adds depth since it is a high risk high reward option for the handgun, you can kill a zombie with less bullets but if RNG is not on your side you will take damage.
>defensive items that are get out of jail free cards basically
It's a limited item so no biggie
>weapons sound like shit and have less oomph than predecessors in the series, RE2/RE3 weapons are far more fun to shoot
Agree with this but not that much of a big deal again, certainly not something that's gonna make one game superior to the other.
>map now shows you when you didn't pick everything up in a room, making exploration moot and pointless
That doesn't make exploration pointless, that just removes having to go through each room spamming the action button at every inch of every room when you get stuck.
>return to mansion after the shed is less scary
I can't see how, if anything having enemies that enter rooms unexpectedly more often makes this better in the remake
>lisa trevor is a gimmick and was more effective as a piece of lore alone
I disagree pretty hard with this. Lisa's subplot is great at adding more of the actual human tragedy behind Umbrella's projects and helps to pace the game better by having something more happening in moments where you didn't have anything going on in the plot of the original.
>Chris design is garbage
He always looked bland as fuck in the early games.

>REmake is easier
In the original, you have enough ammo to kill everything at least twice over. You don't have any clue what you're talking about.

Ok, the map thing was fucking dumb. The other stuff are just quality of life improvements.

(The Lisa stuff is really dumb, I agree)

Two things make the REmake great for me. And that is the 90° and the 180° degree turns. The older games always had that issue with being able to turn around and fight enemies especially the bats or dogs that easily can fuck with you because of how quick they are. Tank controls as well but then again its up to the user. Because older audiences were use to this and liked it but some of the younger found it off putting in the older games.

It's been years since I played REmake so I might be forgetting things but:
>the completely overdone guardhouse
I remember it being really similar to the original guardhouse, aside from the tweaks in the bar area and the shark tank being structured completely differently. Now I remember the courtyard being way more fleshed out and bigger with Lisa Trevor's house
>the lackluster return to the mansion
What exactly made it lackluster? You have Crimson heads and Hunters. The original RE just had the Hunters, which had a pretty cool intro but I don't remember them being more or less prevalent.
>caves
What was wrong with the caves? The original RE had caves to, although the REmake threw that one section with Lisa Trevor at you which I remember being pretty tense.

>I remember it being really similar to the original guardhouse, aside from the tweaks in the bar area and the shark tank being structured completely differently. Now I remember the courtyard being way more fleshed out and bigger with Lisa Trevor's house
They actively made the guardhouse to look more ghastly and unlived in to be like the mansion, but the issue with that is that the Guardhouse is where people actually lived.
The Aqua Ring was also way too over the top.
>What exactly made it lackluster? You have Crimson heads and Hunters.
I've never had crimson heads in the REmake at that point, but the reason it's lackluster is because they completely gutted what was once a highlight, that being the library, and its replacement is now just a block pushing puzzle where you get one file. It ruins the whole thing, they just completely dropped the ball.
>What was wrong with the caves?
What they added wasn't substantial. The one puzzle was nice, but the added block pushing was just dull. Lisa would've been good had her path not been predictable as hell.
