One of his friends just got a Switch for his 8th birthday back in November. My son described it as being "like a Nintendo 64, but it looks nicer". I'm not going to tell him "no, you can't have it because that's nu-Nintendo, only casuals care about graphics" because then I'd just be an uncool faggot dad. I haven't personally owned a Nintendo home console since the N64, and the last Nintendo product I bought was the DS (though my brother had a Gamecube). So I'm kind of curious to see what this thing is all about myself. Kind of wish I got the Animal Crossing edition (and bought before they were all sold out), but oh well.

When new hardware and games would have been published, put up the marketing material and make them available. Reprint old gaming mags.
The kids get to start from Super Mario Bros. and experience the history of games from there. There's a school in town they can all go to and trade tips and gen-1 pokemon in the playground (I mean, teach em with old schoolbooks too, but the games are the main reason). Get fucking hyped together about the launch of 32-bit consoles. Act shocked when 9/11 happens on tv.

It seems like there would be inevitable gaps, but kids will just stitch any inconsistencies into their perception of reality, didn't you?

I know a few /vr/ people in their 30s and 40s with kids, and it seems like many of them enjoy playing retro games with their parents. I doubt without this influence though that any zoomers are going to pursue SNES or PS1 games when they get older.

Honestly, I'd love to make them play through the Pokémon games like I did as a child since I look back on them fondly and they're great games to give kids a feeling of adventure while still be super simple, starting from Gen 1 and going all the way up to whatever it would be in the future. I don't know if they'd put up with it, but I imagine putting a gameboy with a game in front of them at any young age would make them wanna play and finish it.

Out of everything though, I'd rather spend the time watching movies with them, it's a lot easier to tell them "hey, lets watch some films this weekend" and show them something Ghibli or Pixar and watch it with them, and then as they get older some actual "kino" films like Terminator, Alien, Robocop etc.

Although if they ever took interest in vidya to the degree I did, then yeah sure. They'd play a lot of games. Skies of Arcadia, Castlevania, Shenmue, Silent Hill, Resident Evil, MGS etc. I wouldn't force them otherwise.
