Just beat Sonic 2 and want to know what's your opinion on it. For me it's a great game but the Metropolis Zone felt off to me, everything else was great.

>> No.6320337

It's fun but very short. I used to wake up early and beat the game before school as a kid almost every day. I'm still absolute shit at the special stages though. I've gotten the Chaos Emeralds in Sonic 1 and Sonic 3&K but I can't get them in Sonic 2 to save my life. Metropolis and Oil Ocean are slogs. Overall it's up there as one of my all time favorites.

It's a classic for a reason.
Sonic 2's ending is still unmatched in terms of emotion and charm. I felt nothing seeing the island float in the air at the end of Sonic & Knuckles. Yet that short black and white, tiny "anime" ctuscene with just Tails and the flickies gazing at a pale sky, that bittersweet music provided by the master himself, Masato Nakamura and his band Dreams Come True, the tension and certain desperation can be felt, and then, the music changes it's key and a triumphant melody reveals that Sonic is still alive, and before you can even worry about him, Tails is there with the Tornado.
Simply epic (unironically), and is better than any overdramatic cutscene Sonic has ever had ever since.
The simple ending of Sonic 1 still remains as an example of video game charm and how you don't really need much story or long cutscenes to give your game character and attitude. And that "attitude" doesn't always mean being edgy, just running across a colorful valley with friendly animals is enough.
Sonic 1 and 2, masterpieces. The best, always.

Beat it a few days ago too. I found Oil Ocean to be more of a slog than Metropolis, worst part of Metropolis are those parts where you're going up a screw while surrounded by those starfish which is just kind of annoying.

I'm nostalgic as fuck for it, as it was my first SEGA game & the reason we got MS2 after NES. I still consider it the best Sonic.

Metropolis is where the game goes downhill a bit. Wing Fortress in particular is jank.

Still good though.

I honestly don't find much issue with the starfish shitters, they are annoying, but with patience can be avoided.

The mantis motherfuckers and the crab cocksuckers? Now those are an issue, at some points in the stage, you just have to take the fucking hit, you've got no choice.

OP here just gonna add a little more details on this (more specifically things that kinda pissed me off with some good things that i liked during those parts)
to say something good about metropolis zone that isn't the music is that the zone's mechanics were great and the first act wasn't that bad, next is casino night zone's boss, it's hard to control where I go, but the concept itself is really good. and then a big thing is the end and no rings, however I excuse this zone because it's the end and you're ready for it and the satisfaction of beating it. I might add some more when I feel like it

No it's not, it's a good way of getting a good ending. Either you break all the roboticisers or you go to the good future and collect rings to go to the special stage.

Metropolis Zone is frequently cited as the reason that it isn't a masterpiece.
>those time wasting corkscrews
>the barf green pallete
>the fucking starfish
>the fucking crabs
>oh, and it's 3 acts for some reason, too
It's agonizing and destroys replays.

Playing seven special stages that are easy to get into naturally > going out of your way and stopping all progress so you can go back in time to make fourteen good futures

Also, there is no reason whatsoever to go into the future of a zone.
