Currently marathoning the DQ series and just got to VI, and had low expectations due to multiple anons trashing it- but so far I'm having a lot of fun. Why is VI so hated?

It's not that it's bad, it's just weaker than the games that came before it (my opinion). But you probably know that already.
I don't think DQ has a single bad game, honestly. Even DQ2, "the black sheep of the series", does interesting things and keeps you playing.

I'm close to finishing it. Got the boss to his third form but I will build up strength before trying to finish him. The fight takes too long for something I gain nothing from if I lose.
One thing I dislike is the amount of spells and powers. There's simply too much and selecting the ones I want from six different lists is busywork. The class system is somewhat lacking since each character still has fixed equipment.
At some points I regretted playing the SFC version over the DS version with party chat.

I played the PS2 version of V and rarely used the party chat because you had no party members to talk to so I thought I wouldn't miss it in VI.
Another reason is that I'm using Mode7 widescreen and wanted to see how it looks in the game.

All I remember for sure is that it was the first Dragon Quest game not developed by Chunsoft.
So it probably was different in noticeable ways.

I've not gotten to that point in the series, though; DQ is probably the only RPG series I can't stay interested in for the long haul (apart from the lone wolf games like Ys III or Phantasy Star III or Zelda 2).
