What does /vr/ think about the 4x genre?

four times the fun!

>> No.6315037

are there any Starcraft or Warcraft 3 mods that add more 4x elements to the game? If not, I'm also open to other games that just happen to be similar but with more 4x elements.

Uncreative in a small or medium map only. Just build ships and loot all my tech. I refuse to participate in that trait. I think it is wrong for you to promote it. You should feel very bad.

Recently I installed a whole bunch of /vr/ 4xes that I haven't played in a while
>SMAC
I've never played much Yang so I'm having a casual Police/Planned game as I write this on Transcend
>Civ2
Attempted a whole bunch of Deity spaceship launches. I'm trying to land a spaceship before the 1800s, but that requires abusing the Caravan / Freight system more than I have comprehended so far. Here's my Babylon which used Republic + Shakespeare Theatre to hit size 21 in like 300 AD. But this is not enough to do just that.
>MoO1
I suck at this one still, I just picked Meklars and haven't gotten anywhere else because I got bit by the Sid Meier / Brian Reynolds bug.

Not sure if it helps your strat, since I've never tried to get to space as early as possible, but democracy+I love the king day=+1 pop each turn in the city, so spamming cities(which you always should do) and rushing democracy and moving up the luxury slider for a bit might be an idea.

>> No.6316493

>>6316395
Yeah I know, this is how Babylon hit size 21 in the first place, it had Hanging Gardens + Shakespeare's so it celebrated all the way to size 21 very early with a very modest Luxury investment. Unfortunately really early space games that I'm aiming for tend to actually stay tall rather than wide (you can sustain up to 10 cities in a Democracy before your cities start off unhappy or "black hats", which are like double unhappy citizens, pop up in your core cities), but I'm still not getting the strat right. I actually read a bunch of GOTM reports and similar stuff from ancient past and it comes down to getting a really robust trade machine going that knocks out a tech per turn from Caravan / Freight deliveries.

The thing about spamming cities in really early space games is that with the happiness penalty from number of cities more of your slider is coming to Luxuries instead of Science, which hurts when so much of the science output relies on a Super Science City like this.

Ah okay didn't remember republic had the same effect for we love the king day.

I don't really follow here.
Happiness penalty?
There's a corruption penalty to new cities, but that's based on distance from the capital, and you get rid of it completely with advanced gov forms. It doesn't even harm your super city, the new city far from the cap is just less efficient.

>> No.6316542

>>6316508
>Happiness penalty?
On Deity Normal size map, every city you make past the 4th city (Despotism), 6th city (Monarchy), 8th city (Republic) or 10th city (Democracy / Communism) will start off with more unhappy citizens, and if you keep making more cities past that, you will start having "double-unhappy" citizens that are signified by black hats.
While my super city tends to not have problems with this especially since it tends to snag Shake's and even if I miss the wonder, that city still does prioritize trade multipliers anyway, but all the other cities will, with time, require more luxuries to keep happy as a result of this mechanic. Any time I am forced to keep my Tax Rate at anything lower than 100% Science (which Democracy allows), I'm hampering my super city's science output.

Unless, of course, I pick up Monotheism (and often Theology) to be able to pick up Michelangelo's and J.S. Bach's. Those are fantastic wonders but they're off the tech path to Space Flight, which means that ultimately they kinda slow me down. I actually do that often since quite often my super city isn't that super (even the Babylon I posted has a tundra tile and an uncleared forest; I've seen supercities working insane shit like 2 whales, 1 fish and 1 gold), so additional cities with libraries and universities help it pull weight. Nonetheless, with my goal being a superfast spaceship, I have to stagger my expansion a little bit - up to 8 cities in Republic (which is gotten very early, often before Monarchy but not always), then 10 cities when Democracy hits, and then additional cities are added along with additional happiness options (aforementioned "religious" wonders).

The Create Artifact spell is probably the most fun part of the spell system. Especially if you exploit the bug to get free spell charges on any weapon.

Klacks have a better production bonus i think. But the AI cheats, so they will always produce ships faster than you. You really have to out-tech them OR create an invincible stack of DOOM(e.g. 1000-2000 armor-halvening/missile ships) and kill 'em all.

Also humans have the most bonuses in this game and no downsides. They get more research bonus than most races, plus they get both a diplomacy bonus and trade bonus. Humies can easily convince aliens not to attack you while you turtle, and if you trade with them you gain a lot more over time.

It has a nice system with how it works with your spell picks, enchantments you can add depends on your # spell tomes.

I like terraforming, but it is pretty simplistic.
