Not asking what makes it good, but why it was good.
Who in Sunsoft worked on this small late NES game that thought "let's give enemies and bosses legitimate AI" and "let's put a physics engine in this game?"

It was made by a talented and passionate auteur who unlike most weak-willed designers didn't compromise his vision for sales or to please inept retards who can't cope with physics and controls that require finesse. He also handpicked a talented composer to do the music. The guy who made Gimmick is a bit like Michel Ancel, except with taste and talent

I like it more than a ton of games from subsequent generations. Visuals, audio/music, game mechanics, the game have it all. Also pixel art at its best.

looks like it's getting a remake for arcades. Maybe its possible it could get a steam release or something? I'd love to mod the game and make my own levels.

I'm a big platformer fan, but I really couldn't get into this game. Cute characters, top notch pixel art, but ehh, wasn't very fun. I think people latched onto it because it was an above average NES platformer that didn't come from Nintendo.

It's one of the few platforms that adds something to the genre thanks to that star ride mechanic. Try to find all the secrets and you'll get what I'm talking about.

It's fascinating how Sunsoft, one of the great NES developers, closed that era with an absolute bang, only to become an epitome of mediocrity in 16 bit era.

Second reviewer was pretty woke, though.
