Let's pretend it's the 90's and the series hasn't shit the bed. There's so much left to interpret and talk about. Can we do it here instead of /v/?

I'll start: Sephiroth, how much of him is really Sephiroth and how much is Jenova? Is this even a meaningful distinction anymore since the being that serves as the antagonist has completely adopted Jenova's MO?

Dudes, I've been wandering the Corel desert for-fucking-ever and I don't know what to do. It's been 5 hours.

Is a good method.

Jenova is in control, Sephiroth is the puppet. Him and Cloud are in a similar position, except Cloud breaks through his identity struggles thanks to Tifa and the others while Sephiroth slips further into insanity since he distanced himself from others. Power of friendship etc.

>>6313351
My head canon is that it's basically just Jenova but now Jenova thinks it's Sephiroth, because Jenova's just a spoopy parrot that imitates dead people.

>> No.6313369

>>6313360
My headcanon is that Jenova is a parasite that only wants to consume and uses corpses to be able to do so. Kinda like planetary infiltration. It doesn't have a body in the way you would imagine, and the corpse we see is simply a victim from another planet that Jenova used to hop to Gaia.

>> No.6313390

>>6313369
I figured the initial corpse was just the biggest single concentration of Jenova biomass. It looked humanish because it was impersonating a Cetra at the time of its 'death', which also caused the mistaken identity that set the plot in motion.

As an aside: You can hear more than one planet screaming in Bugenhagen's observatory. The others are just more distant. More Jenova out there eating the local neighborhood?

>>6313390
It would make sense that Jenova spreads if it's similar to a virus/parasite. The characters in FFVII often refer to Jenova the same way you would a disease. It traveled to Gaia on a meteor, so it could be some incomprehensible Lovecraftian shit, like a type of spaceborne bacteria with a shared consciousness.

>It traveled to Gaia on a meteor, so it could be some incomprehensible Lovecraftian shit
It very explicitly is. Sephiroth is basically just a Lovecraft protagonist that sticks around after he goes nuts/dies.

Jenova is just Lavos if it was assimilated by the Thing.

It would make as much sense as anything in the remake.

I hate that all post-FF7 additions have focused almost entirely on Sephiroth instead of Jenova. It's as if the devs didn't understand the story themselves. The remake is doubling down on that.

>It's as if the devs didn't understand the story themselves
The remaining ones either didn't understaind it (Nomura) or just wanted to sell fanservice to Otakus (Kitase) or simply went insane in the intervening years (Nojima).

Because they didn't. FFVII's story is an incomprehensible mess and it amuses me that nerds in current year are getting their panties in a bunch over the alterations made in that new reboot.

It's not that hard if you don't miss the inexplicably hidden flashback scenes that make it all fit together.

>are getting their panties in a bunch over the alterations made in that new reboot.
Have you seen what the 'alterations' actually are? It's not even Han Shot First level stuff. The game goes full Nomura in the last tenth. Which is really funny and honestly predictable but not what most people were signing up for.

Part of the reason it's remembered so well is that each player can fill in the blanks and create their own version of the story similar to Dark Souls. There are tons of offhand comments that lead nowhere but create the illusion of a deep interconnected story. Most of it is likely canned beta stuff that got retconned but still made it in somehow, although apparently the JP version is the same so it's not simply a translation problem. The writers probably bounced around so many story ideas that they forget themselves what made it into the final game and what they had planned during that brief window back in 1996. Maybe it's intentional, maybe it's not. It's a pretty interesting case since truly understanding the story means going deep into the development process and reading documents that may not even exist anymore. The story that emerged over the years is the one being "retold" in the remake, the common consciousness' interpretation of the bigger plot points.

>>6313440

I think it's safe to say Nomura is insane.

You're mistaken. There is an objective series of events in FF7 and the only things really left up to interpretation are the exact nature of Sephiroth and Jenova's relationship and the post-meteor scene.

It's funny when people claim FFVII is nonsensical, betraying the fact that they either haven't played it or didn't understand it.

As >>6313457 said a lot of plot-critical things are detailed in optional scenes that a casual player would easily miss, so it's understandable for someone to have played it and have the impression that the story was incomplete.

It's fine if you think the story is shit, but the story IS comprehensible - it's presented through the narrative in a disjointed way, but the plot itself is actually quite straightforward when you get down to it.

I've seen people compare FFVII to Evangelion for some reason, maybe because they could easily have been a person's gateway to JRPGs/anime and thus Japan in general, maybe it's cause they both have giant monsters shooting beams and shit, but FFVII's plot has nowhere NEAR the level of vagueness and threw-it-in-just-for-the-symbolism NGE has.

To be fair Nojima didn't write much of the compilation at all, the scripts themselves were written by other people or were greatly influenced by a higher hand like Nomura.

He wrote that time Tidus thought a landmine was a blitzball and killed himself by kicking it. His head landed in Yuna's lap. I'm not joking, at all. This actually happened in a novel.

>so much left to interpret
This is brainlet talk. There is nothing to interpret, the game writers wrote what they wrote. Statements have been made, they are the game's immutable 'canon', your interpretation is wrong on accounts of it being yours and not what was stated. There's only one truth and it cannot come from the mind of a fan.
