-complevel is mainly for demo playback. For example, let's say you want to learn all the secrets in a level in Eviternity, but you can't find any video tutorials; you can go to Doomed Speed Demos Archive and download a UV-max demo of the level, and play the demo in GLBoom. But you need to change the -complevel to MBF (-complevel 11 IIRC) because that is what the WAD was designed for, and that is the -complevel all the demos are recorded in. If you don't change the -complevel to 11, then your demo will desync when the player runs under a cacodemon, because you will still have the wrong compatibility mode and the game will not let you run under the cacodemon and the demo will de-synchronize and fuck up

Oh, hey, that reminds me - what source port are you using? If you are using PrBoom or GLBoom, use the FluidSynth MIDI player - it seems Going Down's music was specifically made for PrBoom's MIDI player in mind.

If using GZDoom, copy PrBoom's default soundfont, TimGM6mb.sf2, into your GZDoom soundfonts folder, change your MIDI player to FluidSynth, and change your soundfont to TimGM6mb.sf2 in the advanced sound options menu.

Also, if using PrBoom, change to GLBoom, you should be able to keep your saves. Vanilla Doom levels look worse in GLBoom but Going Down's levels look WAY better in GLBoom, especially maps 20 and 21

In my experience (not with DOOM specifically because I've never actually finished any DOOM project I've started, but with other things) if your cake is similar enough to the other, better cake, people will just eat that cake because, unlike cakes, there's no limit to how many people can use it and there's no reason to use both of them if they occupy the same niche. The argument does work for stuff like, say, drawfagging, because it doesn't take much time to appreciate each drawing, but in the event of a mod it's a bit different. People have their favorite gore mod, their favorite sprite improvment mod, etc., and unless someone made a way where you could randomly pick from multiple mods upon loading up the game they can't throw in other stuff without having to remove theirs.

Also, if you are playing Eviternity with mods, load Eviternity last so that Eviternity will override everything else - for example Eviternity has a custom font, so if you load spritefix after Eviternity, some of the numbers in your HUD will have different fonts than the rest. If you use Sound Caulking, the final boss loses his opening dialogue even if you load Eviternity last, so use the Hi-Res SFX mod instead.

Eviternity has a special pistol that shoots twice as fast and has perfect accuracy, and that will get over-ridden if you use Smooth Weapons Enhanced, but that won't matter too much if you are not doing pistol starts.


Right now I'm grinding Eviternity, trying to achieve a deathless UV run of the first episode. I wanted to do a deathness Nightmare run but I'm not sure I'm willing to put in the amount of hours to grind that run - there aren't even any Nightmare runs of Eviternity on Doomed Speed Demos Archive

I don't know how much the community has fallen (was that a reference to a wad?). I do think the ZDoom forums are more PC than they were 10 or 15 years ago, but it's not like it's Twitter or anything like that. As far as I can tell, people on the ZDoom forums don't complain about Wolfenstein mods featuring Swastikas, or the politically incorrect content of Duke, Shadow, or Blood. I don't know how popular mapping your school is anymore, but I can't image you'd get too much heat from it. It's more accurate to the original game, the only major difference is that the default lighting is much brighter, so turn it down to minimum if you want it to look like it did on N64.

Just play it on Hurt Me Plenty if you're scared. If you like it enough, do another play-through on UV. That's what I do so I don't waste time on maps I don't like; mainly my goal is to find maps fun enough to grind deathless UV or Nightmare runs on, for example I can complete Doom episodes 1-3 on Nightmare and I did a deathless run of Eviternity's Chapter I for the first time yesterday (Nightmare is too hard, there aren't even NM demos of Eviternity on the speed demos archives)

Or, if you haven't tried the Doom 4 Vanilla mod, try it out with Sigil while running Crispy Doom. I played Sigil for the first time while using D4V for the first time and it was one of the best retro-gaming experiences I ever had. Set the difficulty to UV in this case because your guns in D4V shoot about twice as fast

Alright lemme point out a few serious issues with your HUD.
The way you've got this laid out the player has to swing their eyes all over the place to get information, they want ammo? Top right, armor? Bottom left, health? Bottom right. What the fuck, man.

Notice how most HUDs categorize certain information together? Like health and armor are usually side by side as they're both the lifeblood of the player. Ammo is usually separate from that so you only get relevant info, as in if I want to know how much ammo I got, that's ALL I'll see if I look in a certain part of the screen.

The other problem is your armor meter, which is pretty much your main HP meter is such a tiny little number, no stylization whatsoever, nor is it a larger easier to read practical thing, it's just some small little numbers the player has to squint at.

As for your weapons, I actually like the wildly varying outfit effects, that's fucking neat and you're a goddamn lunatic (in a good way) for having so many variables. My problem is there's a rocket launcher AND a grenade launcher. That and a lot of your weapons are energy based so things can start feeling samey when you use your laser pistol, swap to the kurasawa shotgun replacement and shoot more lasers, then switch over to the chaingun replacement and fire MORE lasers. You really should have picked some different sprites and sounds initially. Though I'm not about to ask you to go back and sort that out because that's insane given how many effects you have, just keep that in mind if you ever make another mod.

I still admire la tailor girl for its ambition, but god damn dude you went in a little too hard with some stuff.

They have armor that plays by the same exact rules as your own. If you shoot one and don't see any blood, use a bigger caliber, aim for the legs or face, or shoot to stun and then punch them out. Ok guys, what's the hardest map, e4m6: Against the Wicked or [Sigil]e5m7: Nightmare Underworld?
In my opinion e4m6 is even harder because the excessive amount of acid and the mandatory Cyber Demon fight in the end(the secret invulnerability sphere is a must have), both are great and challenge stages from Romero (the music from NU rocks BTW)

I finally did it, I beat the Nocturnal missions.
There was definitely a lot of bullshit in them, but I got through them with only minimal reloading of saves.

How is Spear of Destiny in terms of difficulty/bullshit?
I do wanna try it, but if it's gonna be on par with the Nocturnal missions (or somehow 'worse'), then I might just give it a pass for now and move onto Doom.

Also, how can I get the level generator in the Super Upgrade to work?
The programs won't run on my PC even in compatibility mode.

So this map is pretty much finished. It doesn't work in Chocolate Doom, I have no real idea why. Recommend GZDoom. Would love to get it working on more fateful source ports but there must be some niche compatibility problem. However, I think for an 'e1m1' map it's of pretty good quality. I would love to see any demos or results screens. And if anyone can discern what is causing a crash on Chocolate Doom, I would love to fix it.

There was an error beforehand concerning a missing texture, but I scrubbed that texture out of the map so it can't be that.

Hello, I'm about to try the map out now. Just a friendly reminder: specify which compatibility level your map is designed for. For example, Doom 2, Boom, MBF, or GZDoom. I dunno too much about MBF other than it allows you to run over/under monsters. I'm gonna record some demos in GZDoom; in the mean time you should test to see if your map runs in Crispy Doom and PrBoom+

Your map has some errors. Run the map analyzer in doom builder(F4) to see what they are. I fixed the errors myself, but Chocolate still crashes meaning that you probably did something the game doesn't like.

If you want 100% vanilla, play Chocolate Doom (it can play vanilla-compatible maps only). However this comes with some problems: 1) your resolution is limited to 320x200 or so, and you cannot have too many things in the map or the game will crash. That's where Crispy Doom comes in: it is based on Chocolate Doom, so it's faithful to the original Doom, but it allows 640x400 resolution (the game looks "crisp" in this resolution, hence the name), widescreen rendering, and it removes the limits of the original game so it can load larger maps (hence the term "limit-removing source port." "Above" that is Boom; I dunno the specifics but I know it allows things like ice physics, and I noticed some maps that are for Boom-compatible source ports will load in Crispy Doom but some switches/triggers will not work unless loaded in Boom or above. "Above" Boom is MBF, which I don't know anything about, other than it allows "helper dogs," hence it's name (Marine's Best Friend), and "above" that is GZDoom, which can run anything, but it cannot play demos recorded in anything other than GZDoom.

So there are vanilla-compatible maps, limit-removing maps, Boom-compatible maps, MBF-compatible maps, and ZDoom or GZDoom maps - any map designed for vanilla will run in anything, any map designed for Boom will run in Boom or anything above, and so forth.

No. As far as I know, the only source port that works with mod loaders is GZDoom. If you want to load multiple mods for Crispy Doom, you need to learn command lines. For example:

Well I'm sure you saw the demos by now, so here is my feedback: stop worrying about this map for now and just play a lot of Doom! Play a lot of maps to see what is out there, and improve your skill by completing an easy map set on Nightmare difficulty, like the original first three Doom episodes.

1) Play a large variety of maps. Choose the Hurt Me Plenty difficulty at most, so that you can play through a larger variety of maps in a shorter period of time, instead of doing blind first play-throughs on UV difficulty and taking forever to play each level.

Some maps I recommend are: Doom the Way id Did, and Sigil, because these map sets use the original Doom textures, and are really good, so you can see what can be done without fancy new textures or engines. Also play Eviternity and Ancient Aliens, so you can see what expert mapmakers are capable of; the point is not to discourage you, but to inspire you, so don't be discouraged that you can't make an Eviternity map yet. Also play map 11 of Sunder - watch a video on youtube of how to beat it first, but I want you to play at least one crazy slaughter map.

Also, play some map sets created by random anons as well, such as the Community Chest series, and the Japanese Community Project. These are map sets created by a bunch of contributing mappers; I haven't played these yet but they have won awards so I'm assuming they are good, and even if they are not good, you will learn what makes a map good by playing a bad one.

Some examples of bad maps, or at least ones I don't like, are 1monster and 300 Minutes of /vr/ (sorry). 1monster had a novel idea, make maps with only one monster type, but sadly the maps are just super amateurish and boring af to play; the first chaingunner map actually looked well-made, but chaingunners are annoying as fuck to fight against, and by then I was pretty fed up with the map set, so I decided to move on to something else I would actually have fun playing. Same with 300 Minutes of /vr/ - super bland, boring, basic, ugly maps. I only played a few levels before I used IDCLEV to look at the other maps and I didn't like what I saw so I just started playing something else instead.

2) Complete the original first three episodes on Nightmare difficulty to improve your skill. Only save at the start of every map. I would say that you should grind and achieve a deathless run of each of the original three episodes, but it could take you like 50 hours of grinding before you complete your first deathless episode 1 run. You will learn a LOT and get really good, but Nightmare difficulty didn't even exist when John Romero made episode 1 so it's debatable whether or not you really need high skill to make good maps. Anyway, you will need to have the levels memorized in order to beat them on Nightmare. I made some walk-throughs specifically to how people how to achieve deathless Nightmare runs of the first three episodes ( >>6301482 ), but even then it takes a lot of grinding to finally execute it

In my opinion, you should make your levels be playable on Nightmare, but it can be difficult to achieve the balance of beatable on Nightmare but still challenging on UV
