Thoughts on the Startropics games?

I played the first one and it was a ton of fun. Oddly underrated.

Should have been more sequels available for most Nintendo consoles or all handhelds

I am glad our boy Mike got out before Nintendo went to absolute trash. Great two games, though I prefer the first one cause of nostalgia.

There's not enough trap art of the main character.

First game got hard past the second level, to the point of being unfair towards the end. The controls are somewhat clunky, but that is by design and actually works well for the level designs, enemies, and bosses. Overworld exploration is mostly simple and easy with a few exception areas. Overall a fun game.

Second game doesn't really get challenging until the boss fights of chapter 4, when the difficulty suddenly takes a spike, then it goes back to being easy until nearly the end of the game. Controls are smoother than the first game, and you can move in all 8 directions. Overworld exploration is a slow slog around until you find the next place you need to be. Overall a good game but not nearly as enjoyable as the first despite the improvements in movement.

Neither game sold that well. The first suffered due to being released the same year as SMB3, which dominated the NES game sales in the US until the death of the console. The second came out in 94, and sold just as poorly as other NES games that came out after the release of the SNES. If either game had been released outside of NA it might have been a different story.

Still waiting on StarTropics III taking place primarily on planet Argonia.

When I was a kid I wrote a question about this game into nintendo power and they answered it in their advice column it was pretty based.

Was it the radio frequency? Nintendo obviously didn't account for people who throw the unneeded papers out of the game box.

I remember guessing the code completely by chance because, when thinking of random 3 digit numbers, the 747 jumbo jet popped into my head.

To be fair it's printed right there on the paper to hold onto it until the end of the game.

Solid adventure game that goes completely tits up in the final stage. It has a lot of charm to it. I really enjoyed the quad-directional controls and the 2nd game moving away from that wad a mistake. Plus the story in the sequel was unbelievably bad.

No I was a little kid so it was the part you had to walk through the wall to jump on the geyser, I had no idea to even try that. I'm sure someone alluded to it somewhere and there was a shadow on the wall too but, I just didn't see it

talk about some bullshit
Mike didn't even get a chance to hit that purple ass

Probably the greatest games to ever come out on the NES imo. Definitely in my top 10 for the NES. It's a damn shame the series never really took off to where more sequels were made. I always wonder what a Startropics 64 would have been like.

I feel like this doesn't get brought up enough. The first game feel much more precise and the level design in 2 really suffers from the extra movement options. A great example of how restrictions can actually make a game better.

Fantastic game. Loved it up until the final stage. Still haven't beat it. Which I need to do so I can move onto the sequel.

The first boss fight at the start is the hardest part because you'll respawn with minimum health. You need to learn the pattern really well. They should have just had you start at full health or given you some pickups before the boss room. Still better than the annoying boss rush at the end of Star Tropics 2 though, both really kill the pacing.

Hands down one of my favorite NES games. The movement in the dungeons takes some getting used to but the setting, music, etc make it worthwhile. I have a boxed copy of the second however I've never actually played it (got it cheap for about $5-10).

I find the gameplay of this game very similar to that of zelda II

Hideous controls, artificial difficulty, awful overworld graphics, unused potential of any 'tropics' in the game that mainly features the underground dungeons
Zoda's Revenge was ten times better than the original one

Only the American version gets it, likely because NoA had to scrape the barrel.

I just don't get why the series doesn't get more love. It was top tier: fun gameplay, great graphics, great soundtrack, cool enemy designs, interesting (and varied) settings.

Now this is a thread I can get behind. This game is one of my favourites. I really should replay it, it's probably been 10+ years.

Thanks for reading my blog post.

Too American for Japan, too obscure for Americans.

Slept on this one for years, played it maybe 5 years ago for the first time and it hooked me. It was hard as balls though and the weird lag/commitment in mike's movement really threw me off.

Probably the number one untapped well of potential that Nintendo is never going to take advantage of because gajiin game. I'd kill to see a revival.

And the cave theme may be one of my all time favorite video game tunes.

Maybe someone like WayForward might be willing, assuming Nintendo remembers the series enough to consider the offer.

I agree with the awful controls sentiment. I don't know why the game pauses for a quarter second after you hold down a direction before actually starting to move. It doesn't help when you have sporadically moving enemies. That's what I felt 4 years ago, anyway. Maybe I'll try it again with a Game Genie code to disable the unnecessary low HP beeping.
