What was it ever actually expected to be used for? What expansion opportunities did it offer?

>What was it ever actually expected to be used for?
Nothing was expected, they just put it there to give themselves options later. They never ended up using it, so they dropped it from the later models. 3rd party companies used it for cheat devices.
>What expansion opportunities did it offer?
Pretty much the same as the serial port, but higher bandwidth. Which didn't matter, since they never found anything that needed that sort of bandwidth, and the link cable sold like ass.

Probably some kind of modem, since they at least discussed the satellaview when they were still partnered.

Probably a modem or hard drive.

Like the other 2 anons said, most likely a modem. Since online connectivity has been a thing (at least in Japan) since the 80s with the Famicom.

Didn't someone make a game boy emulator using that port?

There was an accessory that allowed you to play VCDs on the console. I think it was called AV Card?

Most likely a RAM expansion like the Sega Saturn and N64. It never came to be used for anything officially though, just cheat cartridges. I use one myself for running UniROM.

they were planning on releasing cartridge-based games for the PSX that used it but ROM chips never got cheap enough to make it viable vs CDs

Game Shark. It was also used to save games with. I mainly use the Game Shark though, don't need an external storage for game saves.

Well compu serve was a thing since the 80s granted it was mostly more financially well off people along the west coast who had it, internet really took off with those America online discs in the mail, a lot of people before then maybe just didn’t see the utility in the net?

PSX has been called PSX for a long fucking time. You don't just come in and reabbreviate shit, dumbass. It will be this way until after the PS9. Learn to cope.

It was there as a VCD expansion but it never caught on because tapes were far too popular.

Saturn has a similar port.

I think it was a slot for men with strangely shaped (and somewhat short) penises. Commodore started off the human/vidya sexual relation thing with the Amiga, but Sony looked to take the relationship with man/machine even further.

Indeed. Both were designed so that future faggots would spend years trying to make a flash cart that plugged into them and fail miserably embarrassing themselves for all time.

>> No.6309079

VCD addon comes to mind, also i think you can hook it up to a terminal or some shit so any tty messages show up (most retail games have nothing but some still do?)

also there was a cable that let you play racing games in a way that both players had their own TV - you'd need two PS1s, two TVs and that special cable to link the PS1s together. Can't remember if it used the parallel port though.

That's the serial port. Also a good way to play Command & Conquer at 3 frames a week.
