Any /vr/ JRPG recommendations for someone trying to understand JRPGs a bit better?

I've tried Earthbound, Final Fantasy VII, Chrono Trigger, and Parasite Eve, and of those I only liked Earthbound and Parasite Eve.

Recently picked up Chrono Cross and thinking about giving FF6 a spin, anything else that might be up my alley?

There's nothing to understand about JRPG's. You either play them for the plot or not.

People who don't like the Chrono Trigger/FF4-6 tend to like Dragon Quest and Breath of Fire series.

What did you like about Earthbound/PE?
What did you not like about CT/FF7?

This can help.

Maybe I'll get the Dragon Quest 1+2+3 collection on the Nintendo Switch and give it a try.

And I don't like FF7 because the story was so convoluted, but the combat system was fun, for Chrono Trigger I don't like the (to me) repetititive combat, but the time travel and setting is eally nice.

FF7’s story isn’t convoluted, the localization is just hilariously bad.

Any way to play it again without the convoluted plot so I can actually figure it out?

Not him but I don't know how you could find it too convoluted.

Anyways real talk try Pokemon Crystal

It's on my list, I really want to give that game a go as the only retro Pokemon I never finished.

go with slightly more obscure series like tales.
it's often overlooked because ff and dq exist.

try romancing saga 3, it's inspired by dnd and such

Obviously you should play Mother 3. Otherwise... I don't know, just pick random highly rated ones and try those until you're sick of it? JRPGs are mostly the same basic thing, so you're unlikely to find any big surprises capable of drastically changing your opinion.

If you specifically want to understand their history better, then I guess you could try some old ones (Dragon Warrior, early Ultima entries, whatever) and some recent ones and so on.

(Durr Ultima isn't Japanese, my brain was wandering there. But it had influence. Whatever, anyway if history is your thing then read about the history, find the big influencers, and try some of those. I guess it's probably not though.)

You seem to have the opposite taste of me, so based on that I recommend FF8, Xenogears and Paper Mario.

Thanks, I'll write them down.

If you liked Earthbound for the atmosphere try some of the Mario RPGs. Not retro, but Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story have some of my favorite JRPG plots.

If any game was to be considered a worthless timesink, it'd have to be the jarpig: shitty gameplay, shitty sophomoric stories, shitty weeb art styles. Only losers with no friends play that throwaway genre with zero redeeming qualities whatsoever.

As someone who feels like they've outgrown the genre I feel Dragon Quest III (snes version), Metal Max Returns, and Breath of Fire IV are still excellent.

Not retro but SMT: Nocturne and Mother 3 are both well worth playing.
