Why does everyone on this board fight to the death over the fifth generation consoles? The PSX and N64 console had similar games. No matter how hard you try, there is a comparable game on the other system. The Saturn had a whole different library of games, and depending on your tastes, it made it better or worse than the N64 or PSX. It's honestly sad to see promising threads die for another console wars thread.

lol. the strength of each lies in their very different game libraries. ps1 had rpgs, horror, and shmups, while n64 was for 3d platformers, shooters, and racing. there's also the fact that the ps1 library was quadruple the n64s, so while there may be a comparable title on ps1 for most n64 games, the inverse is not necessarily true. there's nothing on n64 like silent hill, SOTN, valkyrie profile for instance

Fuck it, if people can compare Ape Escape to Mario 64, then I can make those comparisons, too.

those games aren't similar at all, like not even a little, and I don't agree that ape escape is similar to mario 64

wtf mischief makers and SOTN are you retarded?

When the N64 only has 2-3 2D games of value it's fanboys have to try and compare them to every other 2D game on the other two systems. It's all they've got after all.

This >>6295969 wasn't me.
My point was ACTUALLY that they aren't comparable, just like how comparing Ape Escape to SM64 isn't comparable.
PS1's 2D games suck anyway, use a Saturn for that.
SOTN blows.

The PS1 isn't THAT bad at 2D, the Saturn is just better in most circumstances. The PS1 has the following going for it in terms of 2D:

Really good transparency support
More flexible resolution modes
A GPU with a significantly higher fill rate

So games that can make use of that will usually turn out better on PS1. This is why Symphony of the Night looks and runs better on PS1. It uses tons of transparencies and it runs at 256x224 resolution, which the Saturn can't do. It also ends up with drawing more background layers than the Saturn can do with VDP2. So VDP1 picks up the slack. But since VDP1 has a lower fillrate than the PS1's GTE, it can't keep up and you get slowdown.

Don't get me wrong, the Saturn is a 2D beast, but the PS1 is no slouch either. They both can outshine the other when the game is built to their strengths.

Yeah at the end of the day I think all 5th gen consoles could do very good 2D, when the devs wanted. I used to think N64 just wasn't capable of 2D at all, then I started seeing some 2D games on it and I was proven wrong. Especially Wonder Project J2, that game is gorgeous with great 2D animations.
It's just that 2D wasn't popular at the time of 5th gen, which is why you end up with a lot of blocky early 3D games for the most part.

Ps1 or sega niggers started it. N64 discussion was very decent at the beggining of the board. Then they started shitposting a lá /v/ instead of talking about games. Complete cringe if you ask me.

The N64 is just in a tough spot for 2D because of all the aggressive filtering things go through. I imagine it might look good for pre-rendered backgrounds like FF9 uses, but those take up a ton of space which the N64 does not have.

Really none of them were weak at 2D, Saturn was just the best at it.

No, it's that N64 fanboys are incapable of understanding that not everyone is into 3D Platformers, 3D Racers, and FPS games. If you like games outside of those genres you're not going to find the N64 library to be that enjoyable. For some reason when you bring this up N64 fanboys go into attack mode.

And then they start using the n word like it's gonna help them get their statements across. N64 is fun with friends, but even with an everdrive cartridge you're only on it for so long by yourself. And I own all 3 main consoles of the 5th Gen. Started out being addicted to the PS1 in my youth, had adulthood parties with the N64 then matured into the Saturn.

>> No.6296060

Yes I've played it and I like 3D Racers too.

I wasn't saying the PS1 and Saturn don't have them, I was pointing out that the N64 library is very lopsided to certain genres, while other genres have little to no representation at all.

>> No.6296080

I'm not a "fanboy" of any console, and I own all 3, but I'm not very into 3D platformers. The only one I like is Super Mario 64.
However, N64 still has my favorite side-scrolling platformer of all time, Goemon's Great Adventure. It's not a genre that's big on N64 (or 5th gen in general) but this game happens to be on the Nintendo 64.

I consider 5th to be the most harshly divided gen, and really its was becasue of the target audiences

In 4th gen Genesis and Super Nintendo had a lot of overlap in target audience, but in 5th gen N64 was focused very much on early-childhood games that didn't overlap with the competition much

Wouldn't be so sure about that.
Many of the N64 best selling games are at least rated T, and many are first person shooters.
The way I personally remember it, my older brother and his jock friends played N64 more than PS1, which I used mainly to play cartoon licensed games (I fucking loved DBZ FInal Bout)
