Was it really that bad?
Seems like an ok 3D Fighter

I remember renting this game as a kid because the lady in red was fucking hot.

I remember the game being generic as fuck but it was a fighting game for 64 so I loved it.

It's ok if you didn't see other fighters like vf or tekken / tekken 2
But when you see tekken 3...

This game was called GASP! in Europe.
I remember renting it, beating it with all characters in a weekend and renting Winback afterwards.

Someone needs to make a Fighters Destiny 2 hack with the characters from this game.

I find it really odd that the N64 was very lacking in the Fighting game department considering its 6 face buttons made it ideal for the genre.

I like it well enough. The "interactive" stages were ahead of their time.

In theory it could have done better ports of contemporary arcade fighters than the PS1, but no one attempted it.

>> No.6298659

The controls are really bad, the create a fighter mode is the most interesting aspect of the game but they made learning moves too random, you can perfect the cpu a hundred times in a row and not learn a single move.

>Capcom released a butchered (yet impressive) version of Street Fighter Alpha 2 on the SNES in 1996 when the N64 was sitting right there

Activates those almonds.

They say that MK Trilogy on N64 is "perfect" when it's very clearly not, it's missing half the animation frames from the Saturn and PS1 versions.

I dig MKT on the N64. Memories and all that.

That being said, just like it, there's no way Alpha 2 would have been arcade perfect, but it would have blown the SNES version out of the water.

>> No.6299094

>>6298698
Yeah but it has 3 vs 3 mode and no loading each time you change players.
Also MKT has no "perfect" port because it wasn't an arcade game. It was developed for N64 first.
It's also the one used at tourneys

I... don't ... But I should. Because the typical largest cart size is about 32megs. RE2 was 64mb, and showed what was possible on the N64, but that was like in 1999/2000. Soul Blade arcade was about 20 megs I think... N64 definetly would have been the best choice for fighting games if cartridge sizes could have doubled or quadrupled for an extra dollar or two during its prime years. CDs just made everything unfair. Soul Edge had the entire arcade, a long ass fmv intro, plus weapons master mode for every character, there was just no way that could have all fit onto a cart at that time without some super godly compression hardware to go with it. Tekken had so many characters with ending videos... DOA arcade could have been done on the N64, but I guess it was easier to port to PSX/SAT, and the N64 version would Iiterally have just enough room for the arcade mode only. Also I forgot that Namco, one of the premier if not the only premier name in fighting games(next to Tecmo of course, although lots of other A+ releases were made), had a long running feud with Nintendo since the NES days, which probably didn't help the N64 at the time. Also CDs were a few pennies to produce about 550Megs of content, where cartridges costed around $20-30 to produce between 8-32Megs, I heard some claimed even around $40. Despite glaring handicaps against CD releases, the N64 still got some fun fighting games
... there was KI Gold, Mace, Dark Rift, War Gods, maybe just a few others. They were pretty fun but nothing except KI compared to what Sony had to offer at the time. If Angel figured out how to do massive compression for any PlayStation game and not just RE2, and had that available as an option back in 95/96 for all the big developers, along with bigger roms from the start, we probably would have seen some A+ fighting ports of Sony's and Sega's best fighting games. By the time it became feasible, Nintendo was already releasing the GameCube to compete against the PS2's 4GB DVD

I'd call it bad, but not terrible. Nice game artwork. Nice OST. Mildly interesting create-a-fighter mode. Mediocre graphics. Bad animation. Bad gameplay. Limited roster. Limited movesets. Worth a rental at the time, but that's about it. 3/10.

Oddly enough, the JP release date of Deadly Arts for the N64 was the same day as the JP release date of Tekken 3 on the PSX (March 26, 1998).

It's all about that install base. Still, it makes you wonder why they didn't hold off on their ports until the hardware caught up.

Nobody says mkt on N64 is perfect, it's just the version used in competitive play because of no loading times, no broken legacy characters, 3v3 kombat and some weird quirks because of some characters lacking animation frames (Like Sheeva being way better because of her cr.HK Juggles).

>> No.6301216

Nobody wanted to deal with that cart size and cost along with potentially having to reprogram a games music driver for the console because of said cart size.

I actually like N64 and Saturn more than PS1.
Best 3D and best 2D of 5th gen respectively.

The biggest problem I had with this game is that there was no reward for beating it. No character endings in a fighting game is a huge turn off for me.

Same problems I had with Kensei: Sacred Fist, but at least that game had a great OST.

You know that the arcade Marvel vs Capcom is like a 32 MB ROM right?

>> No.6304010

>>6303747
Yeah, but not many 3rd party devs were willing to invest in carts that size. Capcom only ever used carts that size and higher for Megaman Legends and Resident Evil... which also happen to be the only Capcom games on the console.
