What does the ultimate retro gaming PC look like inside? Which pieces of hardware represent the apex of the old Windows 9x gaming experience?

why bother when it can all be played on a modern pc?

Do you want hardware from the 1990s, or a mid 2000s box that still runs Windows 9x?

if you mean emulation like dosbox or vm, they're garbage

Something like this:
Pentium II 450mhz
S3ViRGE
Voodoo 2 SLI
Soundblaster AWE64 Gold (AWE64 Value is in this image though because AWE64 Gold is expensive these days)

Out of all of the Windows 9x operating system you choose to use Windows ME instead of Windows 98SE.

Hi LGR, how much of a backlog do you have for the virus?

Why not Aureal Vortex?

Because I was looking for something with better DOS support.

I actually have an AWE64 gold that I found in a flea market. Haven't tested it yet.

That's because it works the best on modern hardware. 98SE is a meme.

the ultimate 3d card setup would be the Canopus witchdoctor

replace
>Pentium II 450 with Celeron 333 oc'd to 450
>S3 ViRGE with some Matrox
>AWE64 with a ESS AudioDrive
and you got mine

>> No.6281795

there isn't one. Lots of games (console ports) require very specific hardware setups and will not work on anything else.

>> No.6283106

My currently preferred setup:

> Super Socket 7 board with AGP that can use anything from a Pentium 75 through all the Cyrixes to a K6-III 550mhz
> Voodoo3 3000 - has good 3d performance and aalso a very DOS-compatible 2D core
>Alternatively an S3 Savage4 with *best* DOS compatibility and a Voodoo2 for glide games
> Yamaha YMF719-based ISA sound card - cheap an abundant, true OPL3 FM sound without hanging notes.
> Alternatively a YMF724 PCI card with less DOS compatibility, but nice XG midi synth

98SE Extreme Box
>A7V333 Motherboard
>Athlon 3000+
>512 MB RAM
>128 GB IDE SSD
>Voodoo 5500
>Creative DXR Decoder
>Matrox m3D
>Aureal Vortex 2
>Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS
>Intel Pro 1000/GT
The above hardware will allow you to play windows games available through the release of Diablo II LOD with extremely high compatibility. The Creative DVD decoder is a bonus for playing a handful of games with FMV's. The m3D is great for the nicest looking version of Mechwarrior 2 and Tomb Raider. The sound cards have marginal DOS compatibility but it should be fine for Tomb Raider. The Audigy 2 ZS should be able to load the sound font for Final Fantasy VII, reducing the need for an AWE64.

Voodoo 2 SLI goofball box:
>GA-5AX V3.0
>AMD K6-3+ 450
>256 MB RAM
>128 GB IDE SSD
>ATI 3D Rage Pro
>Voodoo 2 SLI
>Intel Pro 10/100
>Hollywood Digital FullVideo Elite
>AWE32 CT3900
>Gravis Ultrasound PnP Pro
I have this machine in progress so compatibility could very well be fucked. The 3D Rage Pro is a solid card. The version of Mechwarrior 2 specific to this card is OK, WipEout looks solid on it. The Voodoo 2 SLI setup is great for DOS Glide games. Ethernet card is slower but has better DOS support. Hollywood card is for goofy FMV games as well, including some Zork ones. The mentioned AWE32 has a specific sound chip for one game I can't remember, genuine OPL3, and allows for custom sounds in Dungeon Keeper. Gravis PnP card has the Interwave chip which has its own unique sound.

I've also got a mostly complete DOS specialist machine that's still running 98SE, but everything Windows is better served in the above two as far as I can remember. Also gets more play time. Pic related.
