I was looking at games for Android recently and found Broken sword was on the play store. It made me wonder what other retro games are on Android tablets and use the format well. A point and click will play fine, something like Sonic using on screen controls wouldn't.

What's the best retro you've had on a tablet?

You can run emulators and get external controllers so literally everything. Go nuts, there are a lot of great old games.

You can but that's not what I'm looking for. Using an emulator and a joypad is fine but it's not making the most of the touch screen format.

Why would you want to though? Broadly anything non-action based would be fine though.

Because it's interesting to explore different formats and games. Card games work really well with a touch screen but badly with a joypad. Why not explore different ways to play,?

Well that is part of what I liked about DS and 3DS games, but those were designed from the ground up for different controls. What you'll mostly find are things you used to play with a mouse but now use a finger. I dunno, if it floats your boat go for it.

I think roguelikes are some of the best games ever made and they work well on touch screens, so that's a whole genre to delve into if you haven't yet.

They were a bit small and became more gimmicky for my tastes, but the final fantasy music games did neat things with them. Having buttons and a touch screen makes it hard to commit to the screen fully.

What does roguelike even more these days? Anything with permadeath is called a rogue like.

Well if you're asking about retro games, most things listed as roguelikes will be traditional. Nethack, Abgband, Moria, ToME or Brogue which is newer but also decent are good options. The exception are the Chunsoft Mystery Dungeon games such as Shiren and Chocobo/Pokemon mystery dungeon which are more hybrids with jrpgs. I don't like them but they have fans.

Powder is another semi new (was developed for gba) roguelike that runs well on tablets, it's how I mostly play it now. Decent starting point for the genre.

Not OP, but what about some rpgs? Preferably turn based

Final Fantasy Tactics made the transition pretty well. The flaws with the android version are nothing to do with touch input, it's that the game has stability problems if the game is interrupted with sleep mode or notifications. It's not retro, but NIS recently released Disgaea 1 on android too and it's arguably the definitive version. It really shows that touch input can work well for turn based stuff if devs are willing to deviate from the original menu style.

Versions of /vr/ games in new hardware are allowed. The rules are stupid enough as they are, please refrain to raise them to your standards

Shmups are also alright with touchscreen control as long as your finger is not too fat.
