Parabeetle grassland? That combined with the different World 1 map on the SMB3 box developed my fascination with early versions of games.

From what I recall, there were a few early promo screenshots with the exact same Mario position (and maybe the exact same status bar) which would seem to indicate that they might have just been mockups and not necessarily something based on a playable level.

Early Mega Man X

And if I knew japanese, early Mega Man Zero, before they changed the main villain to be a copy of X instead of the original. Tezuka passed away in 1989. It wasn't that.
According to some sources, it's because Tezuka's son (who was taking charge of his dad's legacy) ended up wanting to cancel it, not much details are available really.
My own suspicion is that his son was very wary of handling his dad's IPs since the grudge with Disney was very recent/was still going (Tezuka's family suing Disney for Lion King, and losing).
Either way it's a shame that game never came to be.

Back in those days I reckon it would've only made sense to fake a screenshot out of real assets. Oftentimes level graphics would be completed long before any decent looking levels were made, so the people making the mock screenshots was likely the level designers themselves.

Memes like this should die, there was no intention for the "FFVII" to be on anything other than the Sony PlayStation®. Pre-production ideas where being written up by people like Nomura for a "Final Fantasy game" for the SNES but they were put on hold as all team resources got allocated to Chrono Trigger, the meme mock up image that Nomura probably did in his lunch break comes from that and that's all it is, there is no game or any thing apart from a shitty image. They then made the Final Fantasy 6: The Interactive CG Game tech demo soley for the Siggraph conference in Los Angeles to show off what the could do with new Silcon Graphics computers, they then experimented to see how capable the N64 devkit with SGI onyx was at running it, which it wasn't. The decision was made in early 1996 that Final Fantasy VII, the actual game, was to be developed for Sony's PlayStation and so every production choice for the game was developed for PlayStation. There is no "Nintendo FFVII"

I wonder if that studio would bother to show off what they have though, or if any current employees would even know of it. This isn't retro but there was a case with Volition and how they officially made Saints Row PSP free once some new employee stumbled across it in a dev kit. I wonder if we'll be as lucky.

If you just want to play it the sequel did come out, just not on the NES - it was originally on various home computers and later got ported to the Game Boy Color (in a double pack with the original). I presume the latter is closest to what the NES version would have been as the port was by Kemco.

Nope. As the post says, it was done only for the original release of Ghouls 'n Ghosts for arcade, but finally removed because of memory constraints. When they were creating Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts, they decided to bring back that level (which is possible the most memorable of the whole game):

Having Ghouls 'n Ghosts such fantastic art it would have been great seeing that level with the original arcade assets.

>His transparent lies, silly antics, and genuinely disturbing resemblence to Sloth from The Goonies have taken GameFAQs by storm. As the only person, other than his sock puppet(s), to know how to unlock the super-secret (i.e. nonexistant) Egyptian level in Perfect Dark, Greystar, or "Gaystar", as he is affectionately known, is a controversial fellow indeed. But what do we really know about the stinky little troll that is Graham "Greystar" Sewell?
>In an effort to solve the mystery of this enigmatic poser, we now present this special investigative report. The stories are true, the photos are real, the truth is just weird.

>Details on Greystar's early life are few and far between, but these recently unearthed family photos paint a picture of a strange and twisted young man. A eerie forshadowing of things to come.

>Three year-old Greystar's family trip to Disneyland goes horribly wrong. Could this early trauma have sent him down the road to a life of mindless message board trolling?

>Grade school was tough on young Greystar, but he soon found constructive ways to vent his frustrations.

>High school was a different matter entirely. A renowned wuss, Greystar was easy prey for schoolyard bullies and thugs.

>Here, we see the dolled-up Greystar making a grand enterance at his senior prom.

>Today, Greystar spends most of his time inventing new ways to spread fake video game rumors. And indulging his deviant Peter Pan fetish, of course.

>Greystar is also known for his unique modeling work. This little shot accompanies the entry for "homosexual" in the latest edition of Webster's English language dictionary.

>What does the future hold for Greystar? Rumors have him up for consideration as a character in the next Mortal Kombat sequel.

>Or maybe, just maybe, he'll get his wish and find Egyptian after all...

>Only time will tell.
This is so genuine and passionate I can't help but love it in this modern era of constant low effort irony

Hello all. Since you went ahead and looked up this page, I'm going to assume that you'd like to hear a bit about me. Well, for starters, my full name is William Robert Mistretta. I was born May 31st, 1978 in Ridgewood, New Jersey. Since about 1983 or so, however, I've lived in Southern California. Right now, I'm enlisted in the Air Force and stationed at Ft. Meade, Maryland. I'm a freethinker and an atheist. My dream in life is to create computer games. I have a wonderful fiancee Nicky. We've been together since October of 1997. Well, that's about it.
