Radiant Silvergun is my favorite vertical shooter, let's have a thread about it and other verticals that have a similar feeling.

Everything about this game is turned up to the point of being excellent,
the graphics and sound have such a cool futuristic aesthetic which the saturn does perfectly, the music is exciting and charging
the gameplay is complicated and interesting because of the 6 different weapons + sword and then it's also extremely intense with the huge amount of bullets and maneuvering you have to do
the bosses are frequent and each one of them are completely different characters and have lots of depth with the different phases and states you have to learn to deal with

playing it inspires me a bit to become a game developer but I know there's no market for this kind of game today, and I don't think I have the artistic skill to produce something so beautiful so I don't really follow that dream (I guess I would end up programming farmville addons if I tried to get into this career path instead)

Here's a little video of the gameplay for those who haven't seen this game:

I always thought the final boss on this game was almost impossible, is even worse than Mushihime Sama Futari.

this is another great vertical: Dodonpachi. on MAME so easier to get access than RSG. of course it's completely different.

OP, you may want to have a look at Image Fight. According to Hiroshi Iuchi, the producer, it was the main influence for him on Radiant Silvergun.

I think the patterns are easier, but you have to know which weapon to use in every situation and have levelled them up properly. That's what makes Xia so tough.

I don't know what it is, but I vastly prefer DoDonPachi over Dai Ou Jou or Dai-Fukkatsu.

Fucking christ.

One of my dreams was to pick a shmup, and get really good at it like this guy. But how the fuck does someone have the patience to know every little nook & cranny that the game throws at you?

They must starve themselves of anything else.

if you're like (shit at games) you do have to practice and practice a single game. there's a lot of memorization, I imagine it's like playing a piece of music (I don't do this though). Right now I'm too busy with uni to actually play RSG which is disappointing.

I figure you'd blow whatever equilibrium you have. Just trying to get good at something like this would leave you in such a husk-like state, you'd probably wouldn't have the muscle memory for other things.

it's not that big a deal. I'm just saying you know what's coming at every stage, how to deal with each stage of boss and so on.

STG player of mediocre skill and musician here, and yes, it is a lot like learning to play a piece of music.

With shooters, I find that if I play a single game for about an hour a day, I get pretty good at it after a week or two. Playing for 6 hours a day doesn't do much to help my skill, so I think it is better to spread the practice out over a longer period.

If I don't play a game for a month, I can come back to it just fine. After 6 months or more, though, I seem to lose a lot of skill.
