Why is this still considered the greatest Nintendo console of all time?

It's puzzling. GameCube and Wii had far better variety in their software libraries.

Popular wisdom considers Super Mario 64 and Ocarina of Time to be among the absolute greatest games of all time. People in their late 20s or early 30s today associate the N64 era with their childhood. The first generation of 3D games was a watershed moment for the popularity of video games and their technical capabilities. All of these factors have cooperated to create an amount of undue nostalgia and reverence for 5th gen consoles.

First party Nintendo game are overrated as hell. First party releases on N64 ARE better than those on the N64, but the SNES has a way better library.

I’m actually not a huge fan of the Nintendo games themselves. All the use my N64 has gotten over the years is because of the wrestling games. AKI developed games that have stood the test of time. I understand the wrestling stigma, but I always felt those games were underrated in comparison to the praise OOT, Mario 64, Smash, etc receive.

Because it had seminal entries in the Mario and Zelda franchises, and was a multiplayer powerhouse.
I don't think it's the best console (cartridges and other hardware decisions were dumb), but it was important, at least for Nintendo.

I'd honestly say the 64 beat the snes in terms of quality. It really only has super metroid, earthbound and SMW, the last of which is playable on gameboy advanced.

I'm surprised that no one acknowledged this guy's comment. Anyone noticed the edginess Nintendo lost after departure from Rare? Rareware being a 2nd party partnership was the one of the main reasons why Nintendo was popping at the time. GoldenEye, Jet Force Gemini, Killer Instinct (SNES version, Gold has its flaws but the hype from part one still had people buying), Perfect Dark (the sequel would've done better on a Nintendo console), Conker's Bad Fur Day for breaking the barriers of Nintendo's censorship (despite mortal Kombat games being released with explicit content). And don't forget that they were responsible for how cool Donkey Kong used to look with the cast of characters surrounding him at the time. I have yet to purchase a new Donkey Kong game since DK64.

Aside from that, Nintendo was the only company to succeed with 3D games on a cartridge after Sony had every other company moving towards Data disc. My father didn't trust me with CDs at a young age, so I had to deal with the N64 at the time. Still enjoy it till this day.

Consistent art direction with most of the hits. Even the normalist of normalfags can tell when a game is an N64 game. It helped a lot that Rare played ball in maintaining the cartoon art style. Just look at Smash 64 and how all the characters, despite being from different games, look like they belong in that game then look at the mess that is modern Smash. Also the art style aged the graphics a lot better than games that tried to be realistic.
Also Pokemon fucking exploded. It was on TV, it was a card game, and it was on the N64. It really brought the system into the face of people who didn't even play it and the constant presence of Pokemon everywhere when it was new made people who didn't even own an N64 familiar with it.
There are other reasons but I forget.

>> No.6248567

>>6248536
Are you retarded? The point of smash is to have clashing art styles, and the only reason 64cwasnt that way was cause of technical limitations. Even each character didnt look remotely like their original game model.
