I'm willing to bet your first time playing a JRPG back in the day didn't go so well, but you built up hundreds, maybe thousands of hours of experience with the genre to the point where much of it is familiar and the barrier for learning a new game in that genre is far lower since there are fewer new things to familiarize yourself with.

Sounds like normal kid behavior to me. Whats funny, is that I had a friend who was completely different from the normal "free for all" mindset, like, when we played multiplayer games hed rather we team up against the CPU than to play against each other, even in games like Mario Kart 64. So if I played with my "normal" friends we just tried messing with each other as much as we could and often times finished the races in the last positions. With this guy it was always about getting ahead of the CPU, like that was any fun at all.
