Which retro games have you completed in your FIRST sitting?
Are you currently playing any games featured in the challenges?
Has Arino inspired you to try (or retry) any of your own challenges?
Which games would you like to see Arino attempt in future challenges?
Which episodes have you watched recently? Which episodes are your favorites?

>> No.624181

>Why does Arino frequently stick those pads on his forehead? What are they?
They’re called reikyaku (cooling) sheets. They relieve fevers, migraines, tension and fatigue.
They allow Arino to push past the limits of human endurance to unleash his full power.

>Retro Game Master: Game Center CX Collection (DVD)
Only the challenge segments from the selected episodes appear in the DVD set.
Numbers 1 - 12 have English subtitles and a choice of Japanese or English narration.
Numbers 13 & 14 have English subtitles and Japanese narration only.

This game has been localized for the U.S. as Retro Game Challenge.

He used to play a lot of games until adulthood (early '90s). Any skills he had certainly decayed between then and when he started playing more again.
>Is he just some random media type or are Japanese people just different?
He's a popular comedian outside of the show. Much of the show's popularity comes from how much he struggles. He stays determined to get through games even when he sucks at them.

Yep, he has overall very good control with the controller, however I've figured that most of his "shittyness" comes from him just being unintuitive with games and sometimes he also has pretty bad luck. Often you can also see that he has bad reaction times on stressful situations, yet hes overall pretty awesome on camera. The AD's are all good though, you can see that they get very nervous when they play for Arino, so sometimes they fuck up where he does not.

Understatement of the century.
Kid Icarus was one of the games that defined Nintendo Hard for me as a kid.

A bit of information on the cooling sheets Arino often sports on the show:

They are produced by Kobayashi Pharmaceutical and are called "熱さまシート" in Japan.

In America they are sold as "BeKOOOL Soft Gel Sheets".

Oh god, I'm so glad I'm not the only one who feels that way.

I love the TamaGe segments, but they just sometimes feel borderline awkward. Actually pretty much all of the time. When you focus on Arino trying the machines and playing vidya, it's alright. Almost unnoticeable. But whenever someone outside the crew interacts with him it's pic related for me.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy it, it's just... the whole atmosphere is suddenly weird. Arino is incredibly unpredictable even when he's on its own. When you add some outsider to the mix, especially kids or arcade owners/employees who are unsure how to react to this weird guy with camera crew... it's just all awkwardly tense sometimes.

Just watched the latest episode (Tom Sawyer) and even though it first seemed easy thanks to continues, the later parts seemed pretty tough.
I laughed my ass off for Arino getting suddenly killed by the sea horse and producer Kan entering the scene without saying a word after Arino missed a certain jump . Manual spoiling the whole ending for Arino was also pretty surprising.

It's not. Some small details are staged or prepared beforehand (such as former ADs appearing at arcades), but overall, Arino's reactions and gameplay are genuine.

The reason why it might appear staged is because the staff has to heavily edit many hours of footage to fit in just one. So of course they're going to pick the moments where Arino is most lively, or has difficulty getting past a certain obstacle.

Watch any of the live episodes and you'll see. The Takeshi's Challenge one is a good example.

As much as i would want that he play this version, it'd be more than likely that they give him Tokkyuu Shirei Solbrain (Super Rescue Task Force Solbrain) to do the challenge. Not complaining, those games are awesome!

Japanese is big on pun humor. The original had stuff like "The kaeru had to kaeru back to stage one" or something like that. It got localized to retain the pun quality as "The toad got toad (towed) back to stage one." The raw episode must have been full of puns. The other ones were probably harder to localize, so they may have altered them a bit more.

Later releases changed them to look more generic, except for Spider-Man, who actually became an officially licensed cameo. They didn't change him until the Virtual Console release.

After reading the comments on some of those TAS for the game, it seems you can choose to submerge the map in water, and it'll only take 5 minutes for the treasure location to appear. However, you must not let it rest longer than 10 minutes or else it'll be ruined.

If you choose to expose the map to the sun, it takes an hour.

Now I'm wondering if the guidebook Arino uses in both episodes had input from Beat Takeshi himself, because it would seem silly to recommend doing the sun method when there's one that takes a much shorter time. They also mentioned the guide recommending a specific song at the karaoke "because they made it easier to get a great rating on that one just because".

This is a TAS where they don't use glitches to clear the game. Note that on the last part, the reason enemies change positions like that is because the game respawns all enemies on screen at their start location when you enter the menu.

Then don't buy it. You should still read the article to see why they did what they did. Remember that the DVDs in Japan have similar cuts in content and seemingly random assortments of episodes. I tried by giving links to episodes, but people never got around to watching them. I then tried by loading up a cheap thumb drive with some good ones and giving it to a friend. I got him hooked, and the thumb drive has made its way around to other people. I can't guarantee that will work, but it's worth a shot. People seem more likely to watch something that they've been physically handed rather than sitting down for an hour to watch some link they got in an email. If you've actually sat down and watched with friends without them getting interested, keep trying. Someone will like it eventually.
