First time ever starting Earthbound. I've heard so much praise and talk about it on this wonderful board that I'm kind of excited to try it
I never had it as a kid, neither did anyone I knew. Guess it wasn't so popular where I lived.

I know almost nothing about this game, just that it might be like FFIV or Chrono trigger, am I completely off?

So what to expect? Play time, difficulty, quality of story etc.
First time playing CT after childhood it took me like 35 hours to finish and I found it to be average difficulty

>> No.624171

It's not incredibly long, not that difficult, the combat is Dragon Quest-esque, and most of the charm lies in its writing and visuals. You might like it if you enjoyed Chrono Trigger.

Average Earthbound playthrough is 25~30 hours. The game is really difficult on the beginning, it has some awful grinding that can make you quit if you dont have patience, but once you get more characters it becomes easier.

First thing you should do is find an Uncensored patch that restores content and dialogue from the Japanese release.

Also look for other improvement hacks on various romhacking and EB sites. I recommend the Staff of Kings(makes titular item drop 100% of the time after defeating a certain boss) and New Controls(changes the control scheme into something more convenient).

If you're playing it with a controller that's mapped like a SNES one then that L-button makes for surprisingly comfortable one-handed play. Some of the comfiest moments in Earthbound was when going travelling around exploring, chilling in a comfortable couch, played emulated on Xbox with one hand on the controller resting lightly on my leg and gently jerking off with the other.

One more question:

How much does it matter if I use the Auto fight option? I know, almost always it's not as good as tactical manual combat. But if there's huge grinding to be expected, should I use it or just be patient?

When Paula gets kidnapped make sure you have a Big Bottle Rocket for Jeff, as it will make an otherwise annoying fight beatable in one turn.

I thought it was a great game, I finished it for the first time last year. I found the grinding to be extremely minimal (just getting a few levels right at the beginning, maybe ten minutes?) and the game isn't all that difficult. Taking advantage of weaknesses/stat boosts is helpful but not nearly as vital as in the sequel. Oh and just make sure you have a few teddy bears around when you get Paula because apparently people get wrecked once they get her because she starts at level 1 (but quickly catches up).

There's a caterpillar in the desert that gives a ridiculous amount of XP, but if I remember you can just touch him to kill him. The only problem is that he runs from you, but there's a spot where you can go a bit off screen, come back, squash him easily, then rinse and repeat.

Criminal Caterpillar. Gives 30k per kill (the second closest is an enemy that gives 3.7k XP, so you can tell that the CC gives shitloads) which means you gain a level per kill if you're around level 30 or so. but you have to be really careful with it. Earthbound has a system where if you're way more powerful than an enemy, it runs away from you and you kill it instantly instead of having to waste your time in a pointless battle you're going to win and get little reward from.

You can still fight those enemies though if you don't catch them from behind as they're running from you, I think? It also doesn't work on bosses.

>> No.629091

>>629073
Yeah, I guess that's one thing they have in common, but the way it works is completely different. In CT, you just fight the enemies directly in the game scene - no battle scene change, like in the FFs or EarthBound. Also, in CT most monsters are triggered by invisible "zones" or just patrolling around, while in EB they spawn randomly and chase you.
The actual battle system is extremely different as well - CT uses a more varied and complex system with combo techniques and such, while EB uses a very simplistic system with pretty much no options of customization.

I usually ignore emulator arguing threads. I haven't got any problem with znes, but what I undestand is that some emulators have better filters and some have problem with controllers. I think this works just fine, though I've played with several others.

Must've been a hacked rom or something.
I don't recall there being any boss after giving the guy the money for the Runaway Five.
You can probably get around it by just saving normally (phone dad and "Record"), renaming the SRAM file to match a new unmodified rom, and reload the game.

If you play SNES games a lot, I'd recommend getting a torrent of the No-Intro collection of verified roms. Underground-Gamer has them.
Otherwise, I believe Emuparadise.me should have decent roms if you download them separately.

Here's some actual text from the game. I think this demonstrates EB's brilliant writing to OP.

" “My Secret Life, chapter three.” (Story from the previous chapter.)

I was neither a murder suspect, nor a target for an international spy organization. But I drove a car down the Jersey Turnpike at 80 mph….

A police officer pulled me over and asked for my driver’s license. He said I was going 20 mph over the speed limit. I instantly pointed to my wife and said “I’m in a hurry, my wife is in labor.” Fortunately, my wife actually had a big stomach. I hoped he’d let me go with this excuse.

“Oh, since it’s an emergency. I’ll lead you to the hospital with my police car,” he said.

“No, it’s not necessary.”

“Why not?” asked the officer.

“Uh… well…”

“Let’s get going,” said the officer…

“No, no! We can’t! This baby is a demon child!”

In games I also get the urge to find and collect every single item. Like in Morrowind where there's a million items, I need to get them all and store somewhere. Also, I've tried to Soul trap every kind of variation of a soul to a Soul gem. Every Dagoth priest, every variation of a creature (rat, diseased rat, blighted rat etc.).

In this game I don't know what items are unique and collectable so in this first run I don't feel too bad for not trying to collect everything.

There seems to be a paradise for monkeys or something. I sure as hell hope to find Wilson in there.

You can make a cool 30384 EXP without even having to fight if you do it right. Since EXP is split up between living characters, that's a cool 10128 EXP per character if they're all alive.

Provided that all of your characters are alive as you grind it: It takes about 18 kills on a Criminal Caterpillar to go from level 30 to 40. Even further: 40 to 50 is roughly 35 kills.

On the flip-side: If you grind with just one character (Paula and Jeff can get sunstroke, but I don't think Ness can; if you're lazy about it, having only Ness alive is a likely scenario) and get 30384 a pop, you can go from 30 to 40 in about 7 kills, and 40 to 50 in about 12.

It's pretty fucking potent. What are your levels right now anyways?

I don't mind co-oping with these two bros too much, but I'm starting to wonder where I'm supposed to go. Guy near the statue says I'm supposed to find a guy with cojoinen eyebrows and a golden teeth, maybe that's the fourth friend. I guess I need to teleport to a specific location through one of the dudes.

Moonside is making me seriously nostalgic.
I loved doing the reverse-answer thing IRL as a 10-year old.
Everything about that place was awesome. I even have a special ZSNES savestate, and I always tried to keep a moonside slot in my real cartridge.

Also, Starmen.net in it's early days and the Flukes (bad photoshop with EB sprites). Good times.
Welp...Just took some drugs and I'm diving in.

I couldn't find a copy anywhere in 1997, had to beg the manager of a blockbuster for the copy I had rented, I got it, I think I also had the scratch 'n sniff cards, but I lost a lot of things as a kid, so now all I have is a loose copy that was used as a rental. Label is fine, except it's worn at the edge.
Honestly, I wish people wouldn't put such a high value on the cartridge itself. It's an excellent game if you like unique/trippy things.

the thing is, the cartridge price is inflated solely because of demand. Not rarity or anything, just, so many damn people want the thing. A a good chunk of people who now want the game only want it to sell it for more the next day. There has never been and never will be a shortage of EarthBound carts. There's like 400,000 of them-More than enough to go around. But because people think 'omg everyone wants it I better grab it before none are left!' those same idiots become for some reason willing pay a ridiculous premium on the game. Hopefully once people can own the game in a legitimate way demand will go down, but I could see it going in either direction.

Price will only come down when the resellers get too greedy. Not OP, but I used the debug menu to start a game as Jeff instead of Ness.

Along with all of the equipment and items you can get from the boarding school when you first get Jeff, I put the ATM card in his inventory for not only accessing the ATM, but the debug menu as well, because very rarely you need Ness in your party or the game locks up. I simply open the debug menu, put Ness in for one second to do whatever, and take him out.

I'm to Twoson and the game is easier. Jeff's starting equipment is leagues ahead of Ness', and I've been steamrolling everything. Jeff uses the Sound Stone at the sanctuaries just like Ness, and so far I've only had to put Ness back in twice; once when Buzz-Buzz died (game locks up if there's no Ness at that point) and to get the number for Escargo Express. He has no PSI for stuff like Rockin' or Lifeup, but it's not an issue yet.

Poo only has three pieces of equipment. He can equip some of the shared weapons, but they actually LOWER his offense, if I recall.

Two of Poo's special items are pieces of armor, and they are easy to get because they come out of dungeons. Simple.

Third is the biggest pain in the ass to get. It's his sword, which is a very rare item that drops on a 1/128 chance against a somewhat strong type of enemy. You can actually miss out on it permanently if you don't get it by a certain point in the story.

You still have a little ways to go before you get to the point where you miss it.

Do you remember Stonehenge from Winters? If it wasn't obvious (if you poked your head inside earlier in the game), there's shit going on in there and you go back there later on. In it are enemies called Starman Super. They can ONLY fought in the specific "factory" area of the Stonehenge Base. They drop the Sword of Kings on a 1/128 chance.

If you kill the boss of the base (Starman DX) before you get the Sword of Kings, that's it. The Starman Supers vanish from the game and you never get a chance to obtain the sword again.

Funny tho, among those ~$150 auctions was one at like $205... who are the idiots that continue bidding that high? meanwhile an hour later one finishes for $50 less...

You don't need the sword of kings at all, and it's useless if you grind for it because you will be overleveled, it won't make any difference.
If you are lucky enough to get it without grinding, it will probably be of help, but otherwise its more something completionist aspies (such as me) want to do, but it doesn't make the game experience better, in fact it's highly reccommendable to avoid doing it on your first playthroguh.

Just go through the place once you get there, if you happen to get the item drop, awesome, if not, keep playing, it's not gonna make any difference. You will most likely fight 15 of the enemies that drop it anyway.

Really, the only good reason to switch is if you love savestates like me. Snes9X was done in C language instead of x86, has been ported to other computers, the savestates will be around a while, etc. Your Zsnes savestates will be useless, however. Well I understand that it might be annoying to see this thread everytime you browse this board. I would have stopped if there were no replies / interest, but apparently there are few anons that like to see someone playing and posting screenshots.
>people stopped replying days ago.
No. Not at all. I'm kind of surprised that there are complimentary bumps and advice. Again, I would have stopped if there were no replies.

Well, he got the Helicopter when he was filthy rich in Fourside.

I don't think he was piloting it himself. Pokey is one of those hands-off assholes that lucks into everything and gets everyone else to do shit for him.

So he probably had some poor hired schmuck piloting it for him. Some poor schmuck whose fate is unknown.

Earthbound's appeal is largely emotional/sentimental. It's not a good game because of anything mechanical, it's because of its charms and all its little unusual details.

Fullblown emotionally-isolated people with actual autism probably will go "I don't get it". Though I could see mild aspergers cases having enough emotional capacity to enjoy it and really really really like the "silly" stuff way too much.

People are so fascinating.

Unless you just have loadsamone, I'd just get the emulated version.

>this coming from someone who owns the retail box, and has since it was relatively new

Just don't bother, seriously. It's a great game but it's so much easier to get a SNES adapter for your PC, or just play it with new controls, or...

Is EB out on Virtual Console or something? Not normally a piracy advocate, so I'd prefer people actually bought it, but ~$200+ is a massive ripoff.

I didn't need to grind or anything to get it, it was just dropped by the Starmen.

I was in a place called the Lumine hall, it was awesome.
