I'm sorry but I just don't trust that undumped games and one of a kind, irreplaceable prototypes will be safe in the hands of retro game collectors. If you MUST hoard then at the very fucking least dump the rom and upload it to a private google drive or something so that when your shitshack goes up in flames because you plugged 10 consoles in at once or a capacitor blew the game isn't gone forever. That's not even taking into account that most hoarders are American and American houses tend to be very shoddily built.

>> No.6237603

I hope that they take note of this. They need to stop being greedy and dump the roms someway somehow.

There's always a chance that a person's attitude might change and they'll decide to upload whatever they're hoarding. But until then there's literally no reason not to create a digital copy in case something happens to the physical version. The MAME devs might be scumbags that are hoarding a bunch of undumped arcade games but at least they have the common sense to dump the games and share them among their private circle.

The delusion is that a rare, undumped game is such a prize that people should pay to even see it like some great unique work of art and that the owner of the physical rom has unique rights to collect.
I know of at least one owner of a romset that refuses to dump anything but a bespoke hack with 'significant sections masked to preserve the value of the original' and, of course, he wants his name listed instead of the developer.

I think most to the good ones were dumped. There was simcity nes, sonic extreme, akira, half life and a heap of others which in the early 2000s no thought would get dumped. The main one I can think of is sonic 1 which would not be with a private collector, many of the dumps were found on old pcs such as when the acclaim computers were sold with the turok source code. I would guess that nintendo made sure to backup their source since they do so many re releases.

On the other hand you get people who think all their nintendo tapes are worth a lot because of tv shows. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mrntYxB92GU

You are mistaken. The only weird thing that Virtual Console ROMs had was an iNES header, which makes sense when you realize that Nintendo actually hired one of the developers of the iNES emulator to work on the VC emulator. They also released several previously undumped revisions of their games on the VC, which wouldn't make sense if they just downloaded the ROMs from the Internet.

Yeah, I'm sure a random post-retail revision of some random Japanese pachinko game would fetch the big bucks. If it were a prototype of said game he could maybe get $100-$175 or something just from people who go for the novelty of prototypes, but this wasn't such a thing, it was a retail game. People only cared because they thought it was being hoarded, most collectors wouldn't five a shit about this, in fact lots of people probably have this exact revision and just nobody had cared enough to verify which version they had and whether or not it had been dumped.
