Camelot pushed Sega systems hard, helped create Climax and supported most companies who would make the most of the JRPG output for Sega systems.
For all their efforts, they were given very small budgets for the Sega Saturn and sabotaged by management while developing for a console that was a nightmare to develop for.

Eventually, they had a messy divorce with Sega, went and published Beyond the Beyond for the PS1 just because, to own Sega, and Sony made a point of localizing it to stick it to Sega.
Then they went to Nintendo. Sometimes around 2005 they messed up and had a massive talent exodus after they tried to make their own Mario Golf for computers.

Sega is pretending the Camelot Shining series doesn't exist, is annoyed by its existence so much they went on a youtube takedown spree to make room for their mediocre ultra easy mode PSP Shining reboots, because they're so mediocre everyone ignores them.

Playing through 3 for the first time currently and having fun. I'm glad I found this series.

>>6230362
Camelot stopped making them after 3 and after Feather there were no more Force games as such.
Arguably Shining Blade and another PSP one were TRPGs, they used a similar system to Valkyria Chronicles, but neither of them really resemble Shining Force. Blade is about sword waifus for example as I recall. The fact that the PSP ones are JP exclusive and about stuff I don't care about too much hurts too because I really like the VC combat system and combining it with Shining Force could have made for one of my favourite games.

The action RPGs I don't know too much about. There's Neo and Exa but neither are all that good for gameplay, but at least both of those still kind of include some of the cast of fantasy races and stuff you'd gotten in the old ones. The modern ones are Shining in name only at best.

I also wish Feather got a translation patch of some kind, it is kinda fun to play and, while designs are somewhat wonky, it also still seems to retain some of the old magic.

Well yeah that was my point really. I mean just look at the image you posted. It's got the characters all set around the campfire and it feels like a real passing scene out of what could be a real adventure. You look at TT's stuff and it's mostly just generic glamour shots or something that feels more at home in a slice of life series rather than a fantasy adventure

Hard to say, haven't played them all yet, currently on Scenario 2 of the third game.
I think 1 is up there. It's clunky in places and lacks some of the refinements of the later two, but it was really fun. I'll have to see what I think of the GBA remake when I get to it.
That said 2 refined it a bit and also let you walk around the world a bit more, which was cool.
And 3 also feels like some further refinement. It is, or at least feels, a lot more linear again too tho, which is unfortunate, but having the more developed story and the updated mechanics is great. Although 3 is fairly hit and miss on some of the designs for the characters, but nothing too bad.
So, I don't know, all pretty good.
>favorite characters?
Just purely going by combat, both May and Lyle were fun to use as mobile artillery.
Going by interactions, I think so far the sort of main quartett of Scenario 1, Synbios, Masquirin, Dantares and Grace, were pretty fun and Scenario 2 seems to be headed in the same way.
Special mention for Sir Astral because most of the cutscenes he is in are great.

And as I recall I don't think Sarah hinted much at liking Bowie until the end either, which is fair given there's little dialogue between characters outside the story in the game, but it felt like in the ending it was just there for no real reason other than to put her down.

sarah was shit. stupid ugly look, garbage annoying personality, impossible to keep pace with the rest of the team, and is outclassed by every other healer in the game (karna gets blast, boost, AND aura. frayja gets aura and attack. sheela gets blast and boost, and has competent attack).

sure, the ending WAS weird with awkward pairing of two people that know nothing about each other, and then really poignantly shitting on sarah out of nowhere, but you can straight eat shit if you think she's any kind of worth it. fuck THAT.

>> No.6239650

Sarah learns blast too.
She also gets more attack, HP and MP than Sheela, and learns magic at a much better pace.
And while Frayja is a theoretically a better healer, leveling a healer with no offensive power is such a drag I honestly doubt people bother using him for more than a few battles.

Unless you grind Sheela to absurd levels with boost II, Sarah as master monk is second only to Karna.

>> No.6239706

she learns blast extremely slowly. in order for her to keep pace with the team, you have to pray that you leave something alive with 1 hp that she can clean up until she even does learn blast, and she still stuggles with enough mana to do anything. additionally, she's the only healer in the party until the OPTION of karna at the earliest, or until frayja (who will basically already be well ahead of her)

additionally, sarah caps out at 10 exp (or is it 13 after promo? whatever) from heals if monsters dont cut it anymore. meanwhile, aura can cap out with 48-50 a cast, making leveling MUCH easier for frayja and karna. and then boost/boost2 on sheela/karna also gives big exp, so the other 3 have easy unlimited leveling.

sarah is objectively left in the fucking dust both statistically AND as a character.

It is fun how for any given character you'll get people that claim they're useless or great based on whatever they levelled them like.

Sarah was one of my better units in my run, definitely above the other two monks statswise. Admittedly that included relatively little grinding.

But I also think that generally the natural stat differences of two characters at the same level tend to be negligible unless one got some really lucky rng on one level up.

but heres the thing, it takes a lot of work and specific catering to keep sarah relevant. meanwhile, other healers get dropped on you at an appropriate level for that stage of the game AND immediately useful AND with the tools to STAY relevant and useful. sarah has.... shitty basic heal, and eventually blast to help her clean up. so why keep her in the party? as a "fighter"? why use her instead of literally anyone else that does fighting better and with less catering/feeding? why keep her on as a healer when the other 3 do MORE healing and/or provide MORE utility?

then please enlighten me how you can magically keep her alive, keep your team alive, and provide her with equivalent experience gain to the rest of the team.

oh wait, you cant. because you're full of shit. 10exp per heal is abysmal. keeping everyone stocked up with healing items to compensate for her inability to do her job as a healer is just circumventing bad design/pacing, and its going out of your way to enable her to take a turn NOT healing and trying to kill something. so you have to get something low enough for her GARBAGE attack to deal 1 damage, and let it live until its her turn, and hope her 5 move can get her close enough, and that it doesnt aggro to her and kill her for being frail and useless. and then once you get her to 10, she can use blast! oh boy! it needs 6hp before she can finish it off, which is a little easier, but still the same scenario. if she happens to get in on something first and casts blast... that 6dmg isnt going to get her much experience, probably only as much as a heal would. not exactly the biggest credit to the team there in terms of experience or battle influence through health/damage, and then she still has to not die to it after.

by the time you get peter/may (and certainly by the time you get gerhalt/luke, you can literally ignore her existence, put healing items on people, and get through battles faster and more efficiently than if you try and save scraps for her. even by late game, other characters just does literally everything she does, but better, and without needing as much saving of scraps. if you dont think so, then you're either playing a busted version of the game, cant see straight through your waifu/nostalgia goggles, or you simply dont know what the fuck you're talking about. regardless of which of those 3 options it is, you should kill yourself because your faggot opinion is invalid and doesnt reflect objective, observable reality.

except that she comes with boost (which is an incredibly powerful skill that sarah does NOT provide) so her exp gain stream is secured and comes easily. in addition to providing boost, that steady exp stream can easily raise her to competent levels of combat, and the fact that boost never stops providing the exp means that she can outscale everyone. also, while she might join "so late" and be a bit "behind", she should only be SLIGHTLY behind (if that) and sarah would have had to have struggled and been CONSTANTLY FED for the WHOLE game to not have fallen behind by that point as well.

additionally, what the fuck does sarah provide that other people dont provide BETTER and with LESS CATERING? absolutely nothing.

Sound like she just doesn't work well with your playstyle. With that said just because you can't use her well doesn't automatically mean everybody else also can't use her. Like it is doubtful you are the best player to use Sarah ever, in fact given your playstyle and complaints it is safer to assume you are below average in terms of using her objectively speaking, at least to those who you calling bullshit on. The fact you are buying items and using them over using her heal and the fact you admit to try attacking with her instead of just healing kinda shows where you are making your mistakes. You say 10 exp isn't shit but over the long run while many characters may have turns doing nothing there is a spell she can use on anyone (including herself) at any time for that free 10 exp. Can't recommend doing such personally as it break the game easily when you play like such. She might not be as broken as say Gong on Shining Force 1 who reach Promotion almost immediately after getting him and abusing the mechanics but the potential is there for her. You just choose to not cheese the game which is fair but you shouldn't outright deny the fact it is possible to do.

It is annoying to play as almost every boss in the game have a hidden condition for you to be able to get a card for one of the three added characters in the game. It is basically a game you need to play with GameFAQs open if you want to 100% complete it in a single playthrough. Even then save scumming may be required. I'll say play it if you are bored of the original but it honestly doesn't add much but a new annoyance to serve as a challenge for you. On the plus side the game also added a NG+ feature so if you desire you can play "blind" the first time then follow a guide the 2nd time though at that point it kinda defeat the reason to collect the cards in the first place as it is meant to be used by the character who is an early unlockable on NG+. It just feel like a chore for me. With that said it doesn't remove anything from the original game so I can't call it a bad remake, just kinda lacking. It is like comparing Dragon Warrior 3 for the NES and GBC but instead of having all of the nice added features on GBC you get only the medals and rewards for collecting say medals. That is how lacking it is.

so you need 10 turns to go up in level. meanwhile, actual fighters that get kills and deal damage do it in 3 turns.
>while many characters may have turns doing nothing
usually during the initial advance, when nobody has damage yet, in which case, she's not able to do anything either. and when theres "killed some guys, position for the next engagement" and fighters are "doing nothing", sarah is not "pulling ahead" by healing them, but desperately playing catch-up 10exp at a time, which they already blew out of the water with 48. she would need 5 turns of straight heals to break even with a character getting a kill in combat ONCE. and lets be real, fighters are killing more than one thing a battle, and sometimes just doing some damage AS WELL. the experience difference per battle is objectively huge. your argument is completely invalid. like i said, you would have to CATER to her to keep her even with the team. leave her scraps to clean up, or repeat so many battles that every character is down to 1 exp for KILLS, and you're STILL trying to give sarah exp.

im not "making mistakes" with my "playstyle". im pointing out that it objectively takes special care, catering/feeding, and TIME INVESTED to specifically get her to stay relevant. "You just choose to not cheese the game", i've done fucking everything in this game dude. im not denying that its "possible" to level her up, im saying its a fucking chore, especially compared to literally anyone else. sarah is just an obnoxious, shit character, and unit not worth putting the effort into. every single thing she does, somebody else can do, and do better. you're just a fucking idiot that cant see simple facts.

You get Frayja and Sheela late in the game, so you don't have much choices for healers anyway through most of the game. while that may be true for super high levels and all (at which point stats dont matter because everything is one-shot and deals only 1 dmg), again, every other healer can reach those peaks at 4-5x the rate sarah can. my whole point isnt that she doesnt have end game potential, its that the process to GET her there is so much harder than for the others, AND she doesnt offer anything useful while they DO.

well im not talking about tippy top level 99 stats. im talking about being functional during regular game play. sarah has a shit rate of exp game unless you put in the work to make and save scraps for her. heal is only 10exp. even if you want to have sarah grind through an additional 20 pre-promo levels, her rate of exp gain is abysmal. however, karna, frayja, and sheela all have means of getting max exp a turn (48-50), so their rate of exp gain is literally 4-5x as much as sarah's. even to the point where killing a monster is only 1 exp, their spells still allow them full exp, but sarah's best is still 10. i dont remember how long it takes karna to first learn those spells, but frayja and sheela get dropped in immediately useful. they'll be gaining exp with the best of them, while sarah is still on her knees begging for scraps.

so even if we were talking lvl99 tippy top stats, all 3 others will hit 99 4-5x faster than sarah, in which case they'll be sitting pretty with dope stats and sarah will be like 30+ levels behind. not complicated math.

I see what you're saying. It's definitely easy for her to fall behind if you don't cater to her a bit. Same with Grace in Shining Force 3. I've found that it's not too much effort though if you just make sure to use up their heals every battle. The consistent 10 exp adds up fast. Her leveling ends up outpacing a lot of characters, though you're right about spells the other healers get like Boost 2 being better for leveling. Fortunately there's the Protect Ring for casting Boost 1, which gives anybody using it 25 per turn. Sucks that it cracks though and you have to keep repairing it.

I think she's worth a little effort in the beginning to get another Monk, but I can see why you wouldn't want to bother with it.

Anon, you've been at this for a few days now, I think it's time to accept that while you had issues keeping her up, others didn't, and that while your style of play saw her fall behind, other's didn't.

The facts are that she can use heal for some free XP if she can't do anything else worthwile that turn, which helps her gain levels relatively quickly. Combined with making her a punchy healer and having her attack stuff too that makes for a good combo with no turn wasted to not getting XP.
Meanwhile the other monks do get boost, which is very useful for the same reason, and helps them level quicker too. Which for them is also helpful because by the time they join you they'll most likely be underlevelled compared to your party.

Both have their ups and downs, and who ends up at a higher level in the end almost entirely depends on how you deploy those characters.

Hiroshi Kajiyama's work has always been more focused on matching what the project he was hired for 'needed'. His work for Golden Sun was simply what was appropriate for the game, much like how you can obviously tell he was hired to do something "Frazetta style" for the Dragon Warrior 2 cover for American audiences.

pic only somewhat related, its Yoshitaka Tamaki's extremely distinct style that contributed just as much to SF as Kajiyama's. A bit of his opposite in some ways, as his style is extremely distinct but less flexible.

Okay, finished the run. That's a first time I finished a Shining game this fast.
I spoke too early about it being a breeze after promotion. There are way too many attacks that ignore defense in last two chapters. Still, it's manageable, especially abusing Sword of Light/Chaos Breaker magic attacks, though the Dark Dragon battle is basically an RNGfest.
I probably won't play it this way again, though I might do a run that skips all the characters that can be skipped (including the starting party) for fun later. So, being stuck with just Mae and Khris until the birds.
>>6248275
Desoul isn't that bad in the first game. It killed me a few times, but I'd take it over high level magic or being surrounded by laser robots.

Shining in the darkness has little to no lore though, it has some classic enemies and that's it
You can even safely skip it entirely

Most notable change is Kane being Max's brother.

Watch them doing a Fire Emblem Heroes / Langrisser Mobile / Arc the Lad R / Wild Arms Million Memories / etc and releasing a shitty Shining gacha game.
To be 100% honest, I'd take it. We'll probably get nothing anyway, and if a gacha game brings more attention to the series, that's always good. New promotional art is always welcome, too.
Langrisser is getting a resurgence in the west because of those types of games, after all.

I kinda want them to remaster Valkyria Chronicles-like games from PSP. Also, their SRPGs that they made for mobile phones.

Getting a proper translation of VC3 would be great. Just as a package of VC2 and 3 on steam or something.

>gacha
I don't know if I'd really want to see one of those for this. If it helps it helps I guess, but it's still sad.

>thinks magic is bad
>cant understand how good aura and attack are as spells (or that aura means infinite leveling like boost)
>thinks getting to the front lines means ANYTHING when you can even DO anything there because you have shit for stats.
imagine being this retarded.

> But the Dualshock Dpad might not be the best for it.
Yeah, that's far from ideal. Plays like a charm on the sort of D-pad it was meant for though.

Even if it really happens, this is merely a setback. It's not that hard to avoid anyway.
