I used to play toaplan and older shmup games but now I enjoy Cave and danmakus, much less downtime and filler in these games. You constantly have to make little adjustments, there's a better balance between memo and reaction, even if you have great memo you still have to execute tighter movements on the fly; I enjoy pattern reading and the mechanics of micro dodging, and their scoring systems are interesting and change up the gameplay quite a bit, they offer more replay in the long run.

I think it's good to learn shmups playing toaplan style games but they can build bad habits if that's all you play.
