Finished it myself just yesterday. The arenas could have used more variety by the end, but damn if that wasn't one of the best games I've played from the 2010s. Big pet peeve, however, was that the Doomguy/slayer didn't slap the shit out of Samuel Hayden for installing the tethering device without informing him first. I thought it was really out of character for the Doomguy they had characterized up to that point. Door opens, some new software, Samuel Hayden makes a smart remark about how he wouldn't have let him install it if he knew it was coming...and Doomguy just stands there. Wtf? That was totally primed for a beatdown, a "don't fucking do that again" moment that would further fuel Samuel's disdain for his methodology. They even set this sort of encounter up in the codex when Hayden has that quote about his top of the line cyborg body, how the world may never know when it will be in need of a hero. But he's no hero, Doomguy is. I've gone on so long about one moment, but it just baffles my mind how that got past EVERYONE at id.

for example (and this is just the first example I found when starting the mod up again), the reloading options are literally give/take console commands, which means they won't work online and gzdoom will rightfully complain about trying to invoke goddamn cheat codes through the menu

In other words it fucks with balance and then the shitty brutal doom users complain about said balance. I was looking for some sort of HTML5/JS "native" Doom port or if that's even a thing, not a DOS emu that can run Doom. Apparently one existed long ago (in that mozilla web-sight's) but it's vanished completely, wonder if Bethesda has anything to do with it.

You're phrasing it really fucking poorly. The problem isn't so much that it's not compatible with vanilla maps, every mod breaks the "intended gameplay", that's the goddamn point, Hideous Destructor is outright stated by the author to likely not be realistically playable on many, many maps, including official ones..

What Brutal Doom falters in is that its balance doesn't make any fucking sense, low tier monsters are made stronger and more dangerous, which is fine, and something that I like, but what it then does is that it makes higher tier monsters much easier to fight by giving them all sorts of weaknesses (some unintentional, even), where they're made far less of a threat. The result is less of a difficulty curve, and more just a difficulty line.

Compare to Russian Overkill where all your weapons are made stupidly overpowered, because the author thinks it would be fun to sweep through giant hordes in slaughtermaps (and a lot of people seem to think the same), or the previously mentioned Hideous Destructor, where all the enemies are made much more dangerous to you, you as the player is made much more fragile and less mobile, and all the weapons and equipment has behaviors and quirks which can work against you if you don't learn them.

"Strong" monsters have always been damage sponges for the most part, and "weak" monsters (zombies) have always been the biggest threats, outside of unique characters like spider masterminds or pain elementals.

Lost Civilization. I'm only on map 2 but I think it's pretty good so far. A lot of conveniently placed barrels, the wide open and vertical spaces make you push ahead for cover and pick your targets, and it's a decent challenge without throwing assloads of monsters at you. The environments are really pretty, if overly busy.

Map 1 is kind of tight ammo wise, but there's multiple same color key cards to let you skip areas, which is neat. There's one part where monsters seem to clip into view right in front of you out of nowhere and I'm not sure if that's a bug or intentional, but it only happened once.

It looks like a B-movie prop. A lot of its lines are way off angle, it looks slightly misshapen, and the slightly off center angle it's held at only exacerbates all of it. It looks more like a broken power tool than some kind of gun. It's like someone made a clay model, scanned it into the game, and never bothered to clean it up.

That's one of the things I'm really liking about it so far. All of the secrets are actual hidden paths, rather than a door that has the same texture but slightly off color. And there's a lot of secrets. It still rewards you for being inquisitive but you don't have to hump walls. You just find some ledge off the side of a cliff and oh wow neat this leads somewhere. Get some rockets and maybe a key card, and then it loops back around to the main path. Or like, a couple bushes are hiding a small camp site with 3 or 4 packs of shells and a single medkit. And a lot of the secrets lead into other secrets, or bypass parts of the level.

A lot of the secrets would be totally lame if they were in vanilla, just from a power up perspective. A lot of them are just like a chaingun and some shells, but at least in the first two maps they're all amazing. Armor is kinda rare and it's only been green so far, and I would've had to retry the first map 5 or 6 times probably if I didn't find a couple hidden shells, a rocket launcher, or a green armor. And the knight on top of a soul sphere, throwing at you for half the level, is an amazing touch.

There's that soul sphere on a pedestal in a secret dark room early on in Ep1 in vanilla, but this takes it to another level. The vanilla secret just subtly taunts you with the soul sphere. This secret tells you to fuck off until you find the small path that leads up to the cunt guarding the blue ball that's been blue balling you for 15 minutes. Feature creep is the only reason why BD is noteworthy. Yeah it turns Doom into 2.5D CoD with a gore mod, but that's why it's worth mentioning. I honestly liked it and the megawad it came with, even if mostly all I did was corner peak ADS with the M16. It felt good to head shot things and see the top of their skull fly off, even if they were a hell knight or some shit.

I played BD once over the course of a week, and I'll never forget it. The sounds and screen shake were cool. It was cinematic, like a stereotypical CoD game, but it never took control away from me. I felt like a hardened, traumatized soldier, pie cutting the shit out of zombies, imps, and all the other faggots.

Dual wielding M16s, a dedicated button that says "fuck you" or whatever, and other stuff really ruin the immersion, but they were also kinda funny for a few seconds. And honestly I'm pretty sure I remember dual m16s being really useful at certain points. Though that's not why I played BD. I played it to be a traumatized generic desperado that will end up dead after one or two wrong moves.

I don't give a shit, I think BD on Realistic and pie cutting with the m16 and headshotting a barron 6 or 7 times, it dying, me reloading because I'm a traumatized gamer faggot, and then throwing 3 grenades into a room because I just remembered I had them, is cool and satisfying. Plutonia 2, map 28, BFG room with 2 columns.
Encounter is triggered when you approach the BFG platform, column enclosures open up, revealing 2 cybies.
With BD those cybies spawn on top of the columns, attacking you right as you enter the room.
That's because their radius is different from vanilla.
Same shit makes several monsters teleport outside of map in Ancient Aliens and some other map sets
Script bug makes several Scythe 2 levels have ~20% chance of autofinishing in 30 seconds because Voodoodoll responsible for exit trigger bypasses the blocker line somehow
Cybie and mastermind (and mancubus too now that I looked at it) steps are still explosive - picrelated) - and cause infighting when the grouping is tight.
Sound propagation is still borked somehow so monsters can awaken when they shouldn't

all that shit is still there, and nobody can get arsed to fix it because it would require to rewrite whole thing from ground up.

Don't get me wrong, I'm the guy that was jizzing over Lost Civilization a while ago. I just really appreciate all the tacticool and gore porn BD throws at me. I love Doom and wouldn't trade it for anything, but BD could've been a competitor title with different graphics but the same stupid bullshit that was released a year or two later, and it would've sold like hotcakes. It would've been the CoD4 to Halo 3.

Granted, I'm playing it on realism mode, and I'm playing on a version that's like 5 years old. But at the same time an imp dies to two bullets. A single shotgun blast murders anything weaker than a pinky and cripples a pinky at medium to short range.

It literally is the CoD of Doom, but that's why it's cool. A single imp fireball fucks me up, and I'm pretty sure a hell noble can knock me from 100/100 to 30/50 easily. It's been so long since I last played, but I know me running into a noble green ball will ruin my life.

But I get to be a tacticool airsoft nerd that pops around a corner and blind fires just in case, get rewarded with a couple zombies and imps dying and screaming in agony, and then I can step back and reload. Or maybe instead of stepping back, I twitch to 1 or 2 other targets, and maybe my aim is dead on, or maybe I only hit them cuz of spread and recoil, or maybe I just miss. Then I pop back into cover.

And my second reward for all of this is hearing the stupid "click clack clck" of the magazine bouncing around. And of course, a bunch of hellion faggots dying in agony, or screaming in anger.

Like I said at the beginning of this autistic ramble, I'd never trade Doom for anything. But I don't quite get the same visceral "yeah you dumb faggot die" feeling that BD provides. Blood splatters on the walls in way too high of a resolution to properly meld with unfiltered Doom, and it splatters on my face screen, and an imp is hugging his disemboweled guts and howling the repeated "AUNGH AUNGH AUNGH" imp pain noise that they make.

HoE is kinda all I remember, at least now that I'm playing it again. It's all flooding back to me as I go to the next levels. E1M1, I remember the locker room, the dumb elevator room that leads to the exit that's basically a copy of the original E1M1, but also leads to the landing zone with extra ammo (that I missed this time and only remembered after I was on the next level), E1M2's stupid conveyor belt of barrels with a couple ammo and health pickups, and large toxic waste areas. With a fucking spot that looks like it leads somewhere but doesn't so you jump in and run around a corner and just melt. Actual bullshit, stupid and gay, but maybe it's a "ha-ha fuck you gamer" moment cuz I'm so trained to spot shit like that.

Past Hell on Earth, all I remember of the late game BD is the giant UAC offensive against the demon strong hold, where there's like 20 other marines meandering about and shooting. I'm pretty sure a lot of them have different weapons, and I think I remember thinking "hey, that's pretty neat, she's got a plasma."

Either way, the low bit rate long haired brunette marine lady is hot. I will never change my mind, until some gay mod for Doom 3 or 2016 or Eternal comes out that tries to model her and totally fucks it up.

I don't remember this at all, so I'm gonna try to make it happen when I start seeing nobles.

The pixelated, but-high res guns, the classic doom monster sprites and wall textures, the glowing lighting affects of waters and helmets and overhead lights, and the 2000 era muzzle flash, tracer shots, and bullet impacts, all clash together perfectly. I missed it when I took the screenshot and I'm not gonna eat another hitscan for the effect, but the cracked screen bullet holes when you get hit by hitscanners are also really cool.

Also, the music is good. It's edgy highschool numetal and it fits perfectly for what BD is trying to do.

As much as I'm gushing over BD because, for me, it's a huge breath of fresh air to a game that without it, is only really ever renewed by unique map styles (like the given, or Lost Civilizations, or a couple others I can't remember atm), I'm pretty sure BD had a huge influence in the development of 2016 and now Eternal, and I sort of don't like it.

It seems too stereotyped to me. It's nothing but huge thumping bass, cinematic monster reveals, and QTE murders of previously revealed monsters. I mean, even BD lets me just see a newly introduced monster and go "oh shit" and then just corner peak the shit out of it until its head explodes.

I think nuDoom should've been modeled more heavily on vanilla, and allowed mods to take it naturally to the "FUCK YEAH MOUNTAIN DORITOS QUICKSCOPE BLOOOOOOOOOOD" shit that BD is kinda going for.

It's hard to dial a game back, but it's easy to kick it up a couple notches, if you know what I mean. 2016 "badass rip n tear uuuurghhh" shit is gonna be the standard for Doom for the next 10 years. In comparison, any mod that tries to tone it down and make it feel more like Doom, with a heavy emphasis on exploration and more thoughtful encounters and surprises, is going to seem like a step back to anyone whose first experience is 2016/Eternal.

Maybe Eternal will assuage some of my autism cuz it seemed like there's a bit more key hunting and labyrinthine levels this time. whatever I don't care. I'll play it anyway cuz I'm a fucking retard that likes CoD Doom

The kind of people that BD seems to attract (at least from what I've seen on Tw*tch) tends to be always the same - guys with anger issues that get mad at the slightest inconvenience or roadblock. Guys that will call it "the best mod ever" and then when asked if they've tried any other mods, they'll go "No I haven't, but I still say it's the best mod ever". There are some hidden secrets and small alternate paths to exlpore, but the actual progression is completely linear. Ion Fury was the same. This doesn't make it a bad game, but it's a design philosophy that's at odds with its marketing. Doom, Quake, Duke 3D, Blood, etc all had maps that were seriously non-linear. You could straight-up skip large segments of the map if you wanted to, and take multiple different separate paths to the exit. None of these retro-style FPS games have replicated that design. You can't set res lower than 640x400 now, no matter what scaling option you chose.
Reason? New font system goes awry if you try to get lower.
Why we need new font system? Because localizations (that maybe one or 2 people asked about).

The first version of that update got rid of resolutions entirely, changing the way resolutions work in the engine completely, with game set up to your desktop res all the time, and if you want anything else you needed to use scaling. If you used windowed mode your only option was to drag the window corners until you get roughly what you want. Ability to set desired resolution was gone.
After being confronted about it, Graf's responses were literally "who uses non-native resolutions?" and "why would anyone need to set a precise window resolution? Is this really a thing people do?", and suggested people use some obscure 3d party tool to resize window to desired res.
After massive backlash, ability to set precise resolution was put back in.
Graf also can't think why would anyone wouldn't want to use texture filtering, which is why we have such retarded default settings.
This drama has clearly demonstrated everyone Graf's demented mindset.

Alright, I figured it out. I was actually using an older version of Crispy DOOM from 2019, which didn't have widescreen rendering, so I didn't understand what was going on. When you play with widescreen, the traditional HUD isn't available. If you turn off widescreen rendering (so the game is back in 4:3) You can use the old HUD (or the new one with the face, which wasn't available in the version I had before). No problem anon. As for Whitemare, I looked up the wad and it was apparently only tested with

and it doesn't say what the intended minimum compatibility level is so it's possible there are some errors caused by it not being tested with Crispy (and also possible some later maps in the wad are intended for Boom compabitility and thus won't work at all). That's the real annoying part about using older engines, sometimes it's not entirely clear what the compatibility level is. Doomwiki always lists it for wads that appear there, but they don't have an article for the first Whitemare (the sequel, Whitemare 2, is explicitly Boom-level).

If you want to use GZDoom with an old-school feel I recommend trying out Vanilla Essence to tweak the look of the game to vanilla. GZDoom still has some very minor gameplay discrepensies due to rewritten code (old demos don't work in GZDoom as a result) so be wary of that.

Yeah, basically. Frequently enough the game would delay ever so slightly when moving or aiming and everything just felt sluggish and wrong. In addition to some visual issues, almost imperceptible, but noticeable enough to me. Everything was a little blurrier and darker, even though all my settings were the same.

Alt+Tab isn't something I need to do very often unless I'm switching sountfonts on VirtualMidiSynth, and I don't need my full resolution for that.

Just finished Duke Caribbean, finishing all the official Duke expansions except Alien World Order. Gets a 9/10 from me; only thing really weighing it down is I despise the pool toy enemies they added. Fuckers instantly shoot on sight and they're packing a rocket launcher. They die to a slight breeze and you can sometimes get them to blow themselves up but there are still points where you open a door and then get blindsided by one. It hampered my enjoyment of an otherwise fantastic expansion, but even then it's SO MUCH better than Duke It Out in D.C. or Nuclear Winter.

Try setting it to 640x400 windowed, then try to set res scale to 320x200 or factor to 0.5.
It will add letterbox, but pixelsize won't change. 640x400 is lowest it will go.
Resizing window to 320x200 will interpolate 640x400 rendering res down to 320x200 with linear filter - that's only possible with small window, you can't make it natively output 320x200 in full screen.

That's why Vanilla Essence was made - to counteract Graf's stupid decisions.

I've been awake for three days, and I've just had a hypnogogic hallucination, in which an idea was revealed to me:
A classic FPS game with a medium cast of characters, and it is a blend of a game and a sitcom.
Each level will be large, taking about half an hour to complete, and will feature explorations of the characters and explorations of semi-complex demi-linear levels which are open ended.
Each level would be released episodically, of course, and each "season" would end with a boss fight.

Just imagine Duke Nukem 3D meets Community (or King of the Hill, or whatever character-driven sitcom you want).
