Star Control II gets talked about a fair bit on this board and deservedly so. To me it epitomises the virtues of "retro" games - it's available for free, can be played on pretty much anything, it doesn't fit into any modern genre, it has beautiful hand-drawn graphics full of CHARACTER and SOUL, and it has fantastic synth music and sound FX.

Not retro but someone mentioned Morrowind above. It's one of the most diabolical experiences man ever conceived of. Everything about the game is so deeply broken that it must have taken a genius to come up with mechanics so fiendishly retarded. The worst thing about Morrowind is the fantastic atmosphere, that keeps drawing you back like a dog fascinated by the smell of its own shit. I warn thee, do not put any of your time into this game.

"Le Morrowind is bad poo poo" groupthink is by 95% a result of cognitive dissonance between presentation that implies action-oriented gameplay, and its actual stat-based RPG nature.
Mostly a result of people coming to it from Oblivion or worse yet, Skyrim.

You can't hit/cast shit if your skill in that area is below 30 (i.e. yoiu didn't chose it and its respective stat as main during chargen) - find a trainer.
You can't hit/cast shit if your stamina is low. Mashing attack only tires you out and results in constant misses. Conserve stamina, charge all attacks, use weapon you have skill with.

When you try and attack a thing with weapon, what you do is equivalent of the usual attack stat check in regular top-down RPG like Baldur's Gate. If you try to attack someone without having required weapon proficiency or THAC0 you gonna fail just as much as you do when trying to mindlessly buttonmash in Morrowind.

I was playing Morrowind long before Oblivion was announced and I didn't like it then and I don't like it now. I don't think direct control meshes well with stat-heavy system. When you have to move and aim by yourself by dice also decide when you hit or miss, that's just wrong.

Not that anon but I actually played Morrowind after having played oblivion and then Skyrim and I reckon it’s easily the best of the three. If you’re not hitting shit consistently you just need more weapon proficiency and agility. I found it much more enjoyable than oblivion/Skyrim where you might stab something 100 times before it dies, like your attacks are just weak as fuck.

Aside from the mechanics the story is way better and I prefer getting it through text rather than 5 different shitty voice actors with a few lines per quest. They can add so much more depth to the story and the characters with just using text.

Lastly, the factions in Morrowind were way cooler. I did a play through as a dunmer and joined the temple and house Redoran factions and made it my guys mission to purge the imperials from Morrowind, which you can actually do because Morrowind still lets you kill characters that are marked essential to Quests.

Morrowind is a bad game that was originally sold pretty much entirely on "look how HYUUUGE! this is!". And it's the start of "mods will fix that" mentality for Bethesda. Gameplay-wise? It's a never-ending fetch quest, with dreadfully boring NPCs rolling-dice mechanics and boiling down the game to bunch of exploits to just rise up your skills and stat quickly, then just run through the main plot and hope for some speed-up mod to your running.
I get it, it was an important touch-stone in history of "open world games", but it doesn't make it a good game. It's simply not.

Nobody talks about bad games, people looooove to talk about well loved games. Some games are so amazing people find the need to consistently make threads to talk about how much they hate them. For example there was a guy making "I hate Half-Life" threads nonstop for over a year, that means you really gotta play Half-Life.
