R-Type and Ghost Hunter are some great hidden gems. The game I enjoy most on the Sega Master System is Rambo.

The Master System sucked. The best game for it is the built-in snail maze game. Everything else was better on the NES, PC Engine, and the subsequent 16-bit consoles.

Black Belt is really fun. It takes a while to get the distancing down for the one-on-one boss fights, but it's a solid game once you've got the hang of it. The original Japanese version was a Hokuto no Ken game, and if you're familiar with the series you can see it in Black Belt, even with the reskinning.

Enduro Racer is fun with the added depth of improving your bike between races.

Miracle Warriors is a reasonably fleshed-out RPG that isn't Phantasy Star.

Zillion has some cool action and light puzzle elements.

Ghostbusters is pretty deep for a SMS game and far better than many Ghostbusters console releases of the era.

Mostly agree, but Castle of Illusion is a different game than the Genesis version and is at least just as good. Not that either version is amazing, but they're worth playing if you already own the consoles.
And the best SMS game's Dragon's Trap (which is better on PCE)

Castle of Ilusion on Genesis was an excellent game. It's not amazing by today's standards because it seems platform games have fallen out of favor. Also, it seems that Castle of Illusion was targeted to a younger audience. But the graphics, musics, animation, and playability of the game was top notch. Quackshot was also another great Disney property on the Genesis that was more challenging than Castle of Illusion.

There is only one true hidden gem on the Master System: Snail Maze.

>It's not amazing by today's standards because it seems platform games have fallen out of favor.
What do you mean? I meant that it's not amazing compared to the best of the genre, and the best of the genre is mostly 8 and 16-bit. It's definitely a good game, but it's no Mario, Gimmick, Batman, Castlevania, or Ninja Gaiden

>> No.6216817

It's a great game and the rest you mentioned are shit.

The SMS is kinda like 3rd gen N64, most powerful console hardware at the time and some fun platformers but very little else leading to an undiverse and unsatisfying library, also like the N64 has a terrible fucking controller.

>> No.6216837

>>6216826
There are similarities, but unlike the N64 the SMS doesn't have even a small library of classics that are at the top of their respective genres today. N64, PS1, and Saturn each has a library that was competitive that gen, while the SMS is completely trounced by the NES. Maybe it had potential some as hardware, but if potential is never realized then what does it matter

>> No.6216843

>>6216826
Another parallel the N64 and SMS have in common is they both have shit sound capability/quality.

>the SMS doesn't have even a small library of classics that are at the top of their respective genres today.
Subjective. I'd rather play the SMS' platformers over the N64's collectathon snoozefests.

>while the SMS is completely trounced by the NES.
Again, subjective. You just come off as a Nintendo shill. What SMS games have you even beaten, btw?

So was I, but I wasn't talking about N64's collectathon snoozefests. I was talking about games like F-Zero X, Wave Race, Mario, Ocarina, Majora, 1080, Mischief Makers, Tennis, Golf, the Goemon games, Bangai-O. SMS has nothing essential
>>6216850
>Again, subjective. You just come off as a Nintendo shill. What SMS games have you even beaten, btw?
I love the MD, Saturn, and like the Dreamcast. I love the PS1 too. I've finished Dragon's Trap (on the PCE because it's a much better version), Castle of Illusion, and Sonic 1, but I've played a lot of SMS games. It's just that none of the other ones were good enough to want to play all the way through. The Master System has a mostly hideous palette that hurts the look of a lot its games, a less-than-stellar soundchip, and not many games that play well enough or are interesting enough to make up for it. Not good

>> No.6217028

>>6216705
During the 8-bit and 16-bit eras, there were a ton of platform games. The fact is that Castle of Illusion was one of the better ones. I haven't played all of the platform games you've mentioned but at two of them, the various Mario games and Castlevania, are games I've played and they are heads and shoulders above all the others. Castle of Illusion cannot compare to those games.

After you clarified that your use of "amazing" means comparable to (using the same generation 16-bit version) Super Mario World and Super Castlevania IV, I fully agree with you. In another thread, I had written that Nintendo has created very deep games and that was what allowed them to compete, using relatively wimpy hardware, against deep pocketed Microsoft and Sony.

>> No.6217030

>>6216850
>What SMS games have you even beaten, btw?
Not the guy you're replying to but I've completed none. It's not that I didn't play any of them. It's just that I found them so bad that I couldn't bear playing them. They just weren't fun. Note that I played the SMS and NES when they were released in the 1980s.

The SMS was generally known to have sucked. EGM (yeah, yeah, they're shit), when they did an early write-up of the not-yet-released Genesis, made a comment like, "It remains to be seen if the Genesis can leave the SMS behind and have games that are actually fun."

>> No.6217374

>>6216837
The SMS trounced the NES in Europe and South America, if I recall. I think if the SMS had more skilled developers and better sound hardware it would have stood more of a chance. However, the real reason the NES killed it in NA was because of locking down third party developers so they couldn't work on competitor's consoles.

>> No.6217386

>>6217374
I meant in game quality, not sales

>> No.6217397

>>6217386
It definitely had a much longer run and way more third party developers to allow that to happen. I can't disagree with you though. I love the SMS, but there's only a handful of excellent titles. I do like some of the SMS offerings better than similar NES titles, though.

Golden Axe Warrior > Zelda
Phantasy Star > Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest
OutRun > Rad Racer
Enduro Racer > Excite Bike
Miracle Warriors > Ultima
SMS Double Dragon > NES Double Dragon (supports two players, better graphics, awesome FM soundtrack)
Rambo > Ikari Warriors

Some great, high-quality platformers and action too. Alex Kidd in Miracle Word and also Shinobi World, the SMS port of Shinobi, and Black Belt come to mind. It's by means rivaling NES overall, but it's definitely worth playing even today. 3-D glasses actually work quite well for a fun gimmick.

Im dutch and way more people i know that played games back then said they had an NES and dont even know what a SMS is

From what I heard, places like Netherlands, France, and Scandinavia were Nintendo territory while the UK, Spain, Portugal, and Brazil were Sega turf. Can't recall what Italy's 8 bit system of choice was. Of course Soviets had to make due with dendy's if they were lucky.

>> No.6218907

>No, preemptively acknowledging they're shit doesn't make you right either.
By itself, no. However, it is corroborated with the abysmal sales of the Master System. The SMS really only sold well in poor countries. If the games really were all that fun, Sega wouldn't have been gotten so utterly destroyed by Nintendo during the 8-bit era.
