What is it about Majora's Mask carts specifically that cause them to break apart? It's the only n64 game where a lot of copies I find in person or online have bits of the shell broken off.

Look up "gold plastic syndrome." Basically, hard plastics that have that "swirly" metallic color (gold or otherwise) have a tendency to become brittle with age, even if they were fine when new. You see it all the time with old toys. I don't know what the exact mechanism is that causes this, but as >>6211204 mentions the metal particles mixed in the plastic somehow acts as the catalyst for it. Unfortunately there's nothing you can do to avoid this AFAIK, just gotta treat it carefully.

Dyes at all are an impurity in plastic, technically speaking. Gold Plastic Syndrome is actually a bit of a misnomer because any colour can suffer from the effects, it's just much more prevalent in metallic style plastic because it's really difficult/expensive to make metallic dyes properly bond and mix into plastic. Any slight stress or movement of the plastic will cause all the plastic the loosen from the metallic particle its loaded with, rather than simply flexing like a plastic that's been bonded to its dye properly. Once the plastic has loosened enough it will start to crumble.

And the thing with GPS in particular is that it's not an age thing. Absolutely all plastics become weak and brittle with age but GPS plastics basically start deteriorating the second they're popped out of the injection mold and finish cooling because they just really are not capable of handling stress at all. Some of the "better quality" GPS prone plastics can make it a few years before the effects start to take their toll but some of the worst GPS plastics are already fragile before they've even made it to a store shelf.

That MM cart is definitely affected by GPS just by glancing at it. When good plastic gets broken like that, it'll seem all chewed up and stressed around the edges/cuts/breaks because the plastic will naturally be stressed as it's being damaged. GPS breaks almost always happen before the plastic can even form stress marks. Like strong plastic would never be able to have a crack like that one on the left, that MM cart is just crumbling like old concrete

I mean that is pretty much what already happened. Manufacturers only ever got better as mixing strong plastics and companies that know what they're doing should be able to make metallic plastics that don't suffer from GPS anymore. People sometimes report GPS-like breaks on some newer things but pretty much the last transformers toy considered to be affected by GPS on a universal level was from 2007.

Most of the time too nowadays of toy/figure companies want something metallic they just use normal plastic and paint it.

The plastic material they used was probably not as strong. Different plastics have different properties, and to get certain looks you might have to go with certain plastics and compounds you normally wouldn't.
As I understand, translucent plastics are inherently less structurally strong than opaque ones, so I figure whatever this plastic is, has weaker properties.

It's basically impossible and it's especially not cheap. You can grind the particles smaller so they can do less damage but any time you add something to a plastic it's going to change the way it behaves. You can delay the problem but you can never truly fix it.

>> No.6212569

>>6212558
What if somehow the gold plastic was layered onto normal plastic? Or, no, that probably wouldn't be all that much better, core strength would be fine, but the thin layer on the outside would be more brittle than ever, and it'd flake off.
I guess a metallic paint is just the better solution.

>> No.6212596

>>6212569
Paint bonds directly with the material it touches by filling in the tiny texture. It has some flex to it so it can move around but stay attached. These days they don't even use paint, they plate the whole thing in a very thin sheet of metal instead. It looks better and is less effort to do.

Adding what is effectively sand into plastic means it's always grinding against it's self until it fractures. It's sort of like making a castle where every 4th brick has to be made of wood. You're no longer a complete stone castle so when the wooden blocks start to weaken the stones ability to connect with each other they all fall apart. Over time those stones will drift away from each other as they get worn, but adding something "non-sticky" between the bricks makes it happen much faster.

Also have to remember game cartridges are made of the cheapest shit they can get away with. As long as they could survive a couple of floor drops that was good enough. Even if they found a solution or a way to make a plastic metallic without inserting metal into it you wouldn't see it being used in game carts or toys, it would always be cheaper to do it the way they do now.

I think you're risking it more by swapping shells (since you'll have to screw and shit) than by just playing the game. I don't think just popping the cart on the console will make it break. Just make sure the cart is always properly stored and not lying around somewhere where it could be moving around.

>> No.6213028

>>6213018
>I don't think just popping the cart on the console will make it break
The way that Transformers Wiki article puts it there's examples of this kind of plastic crumbling at the slightest touch, however the propensity seems to vary between different toys, some are more likely, probably depending on the exact mix and production of the plastic in question, as well as the structure of the toy, some don't seem particularly affected at all.

I haven't really heard all that much about MM carts falling apart like it always happens, so if he's careful it'll probably be fine.
Optionally it's an excuse to invest in a flash cart.

>> No.6213039

The transformer toys are way more complex than a cart. They are articulated and include all the transformation shit, lots of joins and moving parts. I'd imagine it's way more common to find broken transformer toys than MM carts.
Still, carts can get broken if they're not properly stored, some people aren't careful and just SLAM the carts on the console, or when they're done with it, they might throw it in some drawer as if they were a pair of socks, I imagine most carts that are damaged are because of that.

For the standard plastics used in consumer goods you can't. Tardanon is retarded. In order to plate plastic you literally paint it with conductive ink. So not only are you painting it but you're not even plating the plastic, you're plating that ink. You also usually have to use primer first. So you have plastic, covered by primer, covered by conductive paint which is metal plated.
