Is the non-EX PC version of Powerslave worth playing?

>> No.6207257

Yes and you can play it on modern PCs with BuildGDX. It's got better level design than the console versions but it's still way too easy.

It's alright. Just more of a run-of-the-mill boomer shooter as opposed to the more open ended adventure of the console version. If you haven't already played the console version, play the Saturn version. The maps on PS1 and EX (which uses PS1 assets) are simplified. The Saturn version can be played in Kronos in HD and widescreen with a patch.

Oh boy, do we have another Dracula X style contrarian's delight here? DOS Powerslave is okay, but it's one of the weaker Build engine shooters. Like, a half-step above Redneck Rampage. Uses an earlier, shittier version of the tech, too.

You've noticed that too? I'd think the advent of EX would get more people exposed to a great game, a one of a kind one even and they'd celebrate it, but instead we have the weird PC cope that the one made for mouse and keyboard is better than the ambitious one with brilliant level designs and structure.
>Uses an earlier, shittier version of the tech, too.
I think it's the same as the witchaven engine which always felt wooden and stiff.

I played it on a shareware disc when I was kid on period appropriate hardware. Played the full version right after the Saturn version and just found myself bored half way through. Maybe I was just done with the theme/assets at that point, but the Saturn one did just seem more interesting even with the shittier framerate, latency, graphics and gamepad controls.

it's got a pretty different game structure and design of the levels, and the mechanics and physics are a ton of fun to engage with. I don't think system shock is very sequence breaking friendly but powerslave opens wide up once you get some explosives.

Powerslave PC is very different from its console counterparts.
>It's a traditional FPS, with levels with a defined beginning and end, no alternate paths or revisiting
>Levels are larger, more complex and more detailed than on console, but aren't 3D rendered, being constrained to the capabilities of the Build engine.
>There are less weapons, and no power ups whatsoever, but magic spells were added, alongside a mana meter.
>There's no universal ammo, every weapon has it's own ammo

kaiser just used the easier version of the game to reverse engineer. The main difference is in the level of detail. Unless having better looking levels is somehow bad or something, not sure where you would be going with an angle like that but I'm sure you can surprise me.

I don´t know if you´re Digital Foundry fags or just regular Saturn fags, but I possess and have played all versions and the Saturn has a shit framerate, mushy pixelated visuals, dithering, bad auto aim with the machine gun, slow swimming and a fucking worthless flamethrower. Some more complex entryways or halls and grenade jumping doesn´t make it a better version. Playing PS1 after Saturn is like removing cataracts. The PC EX version looks good too.
I bet you people also think Tomb Raider is better on Saturn.

It's not a final, stable release, so you may run into bugs and glitches

>i'm curious if anyone knows of any real differences, like maybe slightly different level layouts or something
Some levels are quite different, actually. Saturn has power ups that aren't present on the PS1 version, and it's possible to do bomb jumps. PS1 has better lighting, better level geometry, more complex physics (things are actually able fall on the ground rather than being suspended on the air like on Saturn) and a much larger number of enemies (as a result it's harder). The higher enemy count is what causes the framerate problems on the PS1 version, when there's a lot on the screen at once. The EX version is the same as the PS1, plus HD resolutions and no framerate issues.

>PS1 has better lighting
Smoother gradients but far less vibrant. The whole game feels more flatly lit on PS1. The level geometry is worse on PS1 as well, with entire areas being simplified. I think that's due to the framerate target being 60 instead of 30.
