Axes and maces shops are (from worst to best) in Mire of the Damned, Silver Cove and Kriegspire. Just save before entering and reload til you get Dwarven Axe (or Supreme Axe in Kriegspire store). Btw, relic axe is shit with 4d2+14 damage +100 hp and -50 Luck.

It’s not the same as heroes 4 because the heroes are static and can’t be attacked directly, but they can do a physical attack instead of casting spells if you want, and there are a few skills which can make it alright (but magic is still way better).

Campaigns are great - peak HoMM. Lack of random maps sucks ass. Maps that exist are bad. Game's production was mirred with so many issues it would made a decent book and/or a good drama movie. Either way, if you want some solid campaigns, go ahead. Just don't expect HoMM3 replayability.
Changes in mechanics are hit and miss, some are great, some are trash, some are half-finished to meet the literal deadline

Yeah. I actually have a certified learning impairment and ADD and I got into Might & Magic; you can enjoy the simple pleasures of holding down a fight button and exploring. Get teleport and or expert haste. Keep Hydras, Gorgons, Wyverns, Dragonflies, not sure about basilisks, but definitely replace the tier 1 and 2 units with something better if you capture another town. Put 1 dragonfly per scout for speed. Conserve your good units, you want big stacks of things like Gorgons for endgame and Fortress defense focus should help. You can get units like Wyverns very early but it's important not to throw them away, use starting gnolls and even lizardmen as meatshields to help conserve your bigger units. Upgrades on the units I said to keep are very important.

Their early game in particular. Is there a trick to massing Master Gremlins, or are they just fucked if I meet a ranged stack/a hero with offensive spells (even just magic arrow)? They're strong on resource and gold heavy maps. Mstr grems are shooters; but like any of the tier 1s they're quickly sapped by artillery, spells, or anything that bashes into them. AI focuses on the lowest def units.

This is an economy game. The physical creatures are the true currency, so conserving armies and rapidly expanding is generally ideal. If not possible, then turtling and hoping you can leverage a big level up from someone crashing into your castle walls or skating past a forward enemy horseman and nabbing an enemy castle preferably day 1 or 7. It's normally more cost effective to purchase higher level units over lower because they're more durable. I like nagas, titans, and iron golems for tower.

No it was a separate purchase and it was more or less expected for you to buy it if you wanted to find everything (and how much of it was used determined how long you spent on the game). This was pretty common before the Internet got big. There were cluebooks for every game in the series, but things got a lot easier/more casual starting at 3, with Xeen still being an excellent entry to DOS RPGs for anyone that hasn't played any before. The old pastebin went over the 5 generations (most should enjoy 6-8, 3-5 are really good, 1-2 are more hardcore, and 9 doesn't exist).

M&M 3 is a bit more primitive than 4/5 despite sharing the same engine. The spritework is lower res, the color palette is smaller, and you can't use the mouse to interact with gameworld elements (when you move the mouse cursor onto the world view, it turns into movement arrows).

but Factory is tightly connected to Jadame.
It also re-imagines many things from NWC forge. Like Pyros and Dreadnoughts are the only original units in Forge (rest were already existing in game species) are both in factory. And there are (and will be even more) references in the town screen.

Not very fast but steadily we are completing thing by thing. At the end I think almost no assets from what was shown in May will make it to release version. MANY things are being remade from a scratch. But that's Hota quality standards for you.

I finally did it. I won Warlords. It's the one map I always started as a kid, played for a bit, and then never finished because I was so slow. This time, I just started going and busted 2 AI's before stopping for anything. From there it was easy going, despite the map being dirt poor in resource stacks.

Also holy fuck conflux is OP. The last AI had that and the phoenix stack was just plain absurd. Fortunately I had two mains to throw at that hero since neither was strong enough on its own.

In HotA yes. Under Tools->Map Specifications you can disable monster/plague weeks.

If you don't have HotA you can simply put a blue Event bubble on the spot that needs to stay free. Monsters will never spawn on those. That's how map makers used to solve this problem back in the day.

No. I ran into that problem once when a fan-made map required me to waterwalk to a sign. This used to be possible in SoD but not in HotA for some reason. In the end I had to start over.

I know regular M&M discussion isn't super popular but I'm running through MM4/5 right now, curious to know if there's a good place to get some cash for the road.
I'm using Ludmeister's monster mod which turns the Dwarf Mines into an absolute nightmare, so I need to prepare before going in there but of course the Vertigo weapon shop is trash. So I need pricier stuff, but I need gold for that.

Anyone got reliable places? I've just kind of been mucking through the rivers, shooting monsters where they can't hit me.

It's somewhat expected that you already know the game to play that mod, but the idea was to go through the pyramid and do some of the easier Castleview quests. The normal place to get early gold in Clouds is in the dwarf mines. Go to a mirror and type Mine1 or just walk west from Vertigo. Getting back will require walking back or using Mr. Wizard (who takes all your party gems) until you get spells like Lloyd's Beacon or Town Portal. Your last option is finding Phirna Roots all over Toad Meadow south of Vertigo which give 5 potions that sell for a decent amount. If you are looking for an exploit you should know that if you haven't seen an enemy it won't agro unless you walk on its tile or it comes into your field of view, so walking backwards and sidestepping will let you skip the worst enemies. There are a couple fountains right outside Vertigo that give temporary armor class and hp.

Actually, I figured a way around the tougher stuff; I just had to play safe and stock up some vendor trash so I could buy Prot from Elements, between which and Cure Poison I started cutting swathes through the mines. Now's just a matter of gearing up.

I donno about /vr/ but I have multiple friends I play HotA with since it's a clear improvement.
My two brothers and many friends and I all played HoMM3 as kids, at times together, and so we all love it dearly. The sheer QoL in HotA-- accepting or rejecting witch huts or scholars, seeing artifact names, having spell formulae in the description to name a few key components-- is like playing the game with a whole new breath of fresh air, and since we mostly just romp against AI, the improvements thereto have been wonderful to face down.

Frankly, I admire the game single player and it's not on the level of some games where I consider the multiplayer to be a key component of enjoyment, but to enjoy the game with friends is just such a comfy time.

Yeah, it hurts to admit but definitely. Just tried to do a random map with the knight town for old time's sake and I was struggling hard to fund just archers + some meat shield swordmen / pikes.
