If you mean running the same 5 stages over and over, in the exact same way, and restarting when you get hit once, no, definitely no #gameplay.
If you mean going on an adventure with surprises, a clear beginning and end, with lots of things to figure out and plenty of problems and battles to conquer then MAYBE.

having a real hard time deciding between breath of fire 3 and 4. And I remember them well enough unlike bof2. BoF3 had the better dragon system by far , better camera perspective and mechanics....but the story... As cool looking as the final boss gets when she stops pretending to be a gentle caring goddess (if she even was that to begin with, I think implication is she is some artificial construct with major control issues/delusions of grandeur?), obviously the final boss in bof4 is more interesting since you actually play as the dude and get to see his perspective.

The problem with Dragon Quarter wasn't just >>6201384. It was also the fact that the game places a timer on you, one that's only truly "reset" by starting a game over. Majora's Mask was already tough for people to approach and that game had a lot of ways to mitigate its timer, but in DQ once Ryu gets his Dragon form, you get pressured. It's not exactly tight, and if you abuse Party EXP gained through battles before rewinding to your last save, you theoretically may not even have to use the Dragon mode, but then the best method of destroying some really nasty bosses also accelerates the timer. It's just too much for the casual consumer, you gotta grit your teeth and really take in consequences per action with it.

>2 - 4 are all considered to be great JRPGs.
They each have some flaws but overall I agree they qualify as great. Not a fan of 1 or D.Quarter though.

>>6201721
>seem to require the same low skill level as this genre so she might enjoy them.
Skill to do what? Skill implies you're aiming for a goal and there's a standard to compare yourself to.
The best BoF3 players can beat it in under 9 hours, at low-level with low-gear.
The average BoF3 player will take over 40hours, at high-level with good gear. There is a skill gap when you think of it this way. If you have no context of what is being done then you won't know where you stand on the skill ladder.

>It was also the fact that the game places a timer on you, one that's only truly "reset" by starting a game over.
This is a bit deceptive to anyone who hasn't read the manual or played the game. I like to describe Dragon Quarter as the perfect example of "choose your own difficult" in game design. The game gives you three options whenever you game over
>SOL: Restart
>SOL: Restore
>The End

The first option is what sends you back to the beginning of the game and resets your character's levels. However, in both Restart and Restore you keep any skills, equipped or stored weapons, and Party Xp (a floating bank of experience points to be used whenever). In addition to this, based on performance the types of enemies you encounter will be different and stronger ones. You will also unlock new cutscenes that flesh out some events.

SOL: Restore sends you to the last save point and does the same as Restore with regards to inventory and skills.

The end is just that, you take a game over and just reload your last save.

So for players who try and complete the game on a single run; the timer of the game, the D-counter, will really start to ramp up the tension as just walking around brings you closer to death and it more heavily restricts your usage of dragon form. This is what a lot of people bounce off of since they might not realize how to game the system. Meanwhile other players will abuse Restore to also beat the game since you can more freely use dragon form to destroy any and all encounters at the cost of getting a poorer rating upon completing the game since the game does grade you on exploration, combat, and whether or not you played everything from start to finish in a single go.

It's definitely the Gaiden game of the franchise but if more people are finally warming up to it that's good in my books. DQ was my first BoF title and I loved it despite realizing it's very different from it's predecessors.

Consider that the first game in the series can be completely beaten by avoiding random encounters and just using dragon forms on the bosses. I understand what they were attempting to do now with a bit of hindsight.

Beating BOF1 with no random encounters feels liberating.

I'm reminded that for whatever reason, Ryu, Teepo and Nina all use concept designs for their young sprites instead of the finalized art work or how the ending depicts Ryu and Nina. In fact, the concept art work reminds me of the first two games compared to the more modern and sleeker final art.
