Is this the most underrated Mario game? It was just great. It was a huge step up from the first Mario Land. It even introduced Wario.

It has the best overworld of any mario game I think, and it's really atmospheric in general and gives you a real sense of purpose besides just "save the princess". Where it fails I think are the controls, they feel so loose and floaty compared to the console mario games. Still way better than SML1 though.

Mario Land 2 had some pretty surreal worlds. Even when I was a little kid I thought some areas were weird, like the Mario Robot. Kind of wish Mario would do those more surreal, or "out there", areas again cuz I enjoyed those.

A masterpiece of hidden blocks, memorization puzzles, and not fun platforming where you have to be super careful with your every move. Basically They took everything good from the 1st mario game and scrapped it. Not to mention the graphic assets and music are fucking identical to SMB1. It's good. But Super Mario Land 1 is special, whereas 2 is merely a good, well made game, not great. By all accounts 2 is better. Just like 64 is better than the original Super Mario Bros, if you're just talking about sheer depth, immersion, and technology.

Of course it's just my personal opinion and taste. I didn't grow up with either of them, but even then 1 does something for me 2 never could. To begin with, I don't like the music of 2 at all. As one poster said the level 1 music of 1 alone does every track in 2 out of the water, which is of course the same melody re-arranged. Moving on to the levels, even though in both games the worlds have various themes Super Mario Land 2 just felt kiddie to me, like Kindergarten decoration or Saturday Morning cartoon kiddy, whereas I find in 1 much more humor, spirit, and creativity. In 1 you go to Asia and Ancient Egypt. In 2 you go to Halloween and up a robot's butt.

Even in the gameplay department I prefer 1. Since 2 is easier and as far as I know has no more challenging second quest, everything feels less consequential. The characters are bigger and you have more mobility, but it just feels at that point like an inferior 3 or World, whereas 1 had its own ting going on with the tight, rigid mechanics and unique level design and actions like collecting coins with the cannon ball power-up.

The graphics in 2 are, again, better on a technical level, but it all comes off as dumb and gaudy to me, like the art style of World but cutsey in the worst possible way. Again, in Land 1 the character designs were so cool, quirky and tasteful. Even though the graphical fidelity, backgrounds and sprites leave far more to the imagination that only enhances the experience for me.

Super Mario Land is like a poignant fever dream of nostalgia, and Super Mario Land 2 is like a high quality fangame. I'll always take the one that will stick with me more over the one that's "objectively better."

This, the difficulty curve is pretty shit. The open overworld concept was a good idea in theory, but in practice it just means there's no progression in difficulty, and then BAM Warios Castle gives you surprise buttsecks.
Would of been better if you progressively unlocked worlds, maybe 2 by 2, so you'd essentially have three levels of difficulty.

I personally feel like, retro-wise, it is the most OVERRATED Mario game. Literally every mother fucker thinks they sound like some kind of esoteric connoisseur when they blurt out "ACKSCHUALLY, my favorite Mario game is Mario Land 2!"

Nigger, everybody and their brother likes this mediocre piece of shit. I never liked it, even as a kid. Something felt off. Might be the oversized sprites and the poor visibility. I also recall a couple of instances where poor graphic design made it hard to tell what was or wasn't a stage hazard. I haven't played it in years, but it just always rubbed me the wrong way; felt like a dumpy Mario fan game from Newgrounds, years before Newgrounds was even a thing.

>>6196997
>Mario Land 1 is better
Unironically this. It's not nearly as ambitious, but that works in its favor. It's a tight, simple platformer with a couple of scrolling shooter stages thrown in for shits, and you can beat it in like 25 minutes. Perfect portable experience. The game aims way lower than the sequel, but I think because of that, it hits its target better.
