There's not enough good black mesa maps around. A big 2D spread would make a good poster

What old games did that kind of thing? I guess you've got your Metroids and whatnot. Personally I always think of Strife. I really liked that game's natural-feeling world layout.

Since Dark Souls is so famous for it now (as it should be), I imagine that King's Field and such did it too, but maybe not.

They do but not in the way interesting way Metroidvanias do. Pic unrelated. I wanted to post the SotN map but its way over the upload limit.

I really like how all of dkc2's levels are represented in the world map in some fashion.
Also, it's cool how every level in K. Rool's Keep is vertical, just like the world map screen of the area.

I would probably make that into a poster if it wasn't such a cringe thing to do. But I spent so much time with this game. Didn't have a home console but this was still very good. I made due with what I had and am glad I played it.

Yoshi's Island was a great game, but the overworld map was very disappointing and a huge step back from Mario World. It's like they didn't really bother and just filled something in in the last minute. Sad.

The player's guide for DKC3 had higher fidelity versions of the world maps inside and I spent years thinking as a kid that you could somehow upgrade the maps in game to look like that. It wasn't until many years later that I realized they were probably just uncompressed versions of the renders.

Also notice how DKC's overworld is a rainforest type area, DKC2 is a caribbean type area, and DKC3 a north american type area. It's like you're going from south america to central america to north america.

That's what you'd get with British visual designers for video game stuff. Just a lot of gaudy, vaguely comical crap crammed in everywhere, not because it looks pretty or is funny or fits the lore, but just because of the wrongness in their corrupted brains.

It's a miracle that the DKC series looks as good as it does in spite of those people.

I hope the overworld on hacks are fine.

>>6188238
DKC3's map was great. They could have gone farther with the concept and maybe it was a step back from the zaniness of the previous game, but being able to take yourself off the rails of a map is always a nice thing in my book.
>>6188225
I forget that Yoshi's Island even has an overworld at all, since it's all basically visual filler that's redundant due to the level list above it. A shame, because the actual crayon scribbling design is cute and would have fit a SMW1 layout just fine.
