The animations and endings made the whole game look like a joke. It doesn't help that the absolute bonkers game speed contributed to looking like Looney Tunes. But that's why I like MK4 in the current year.

MK has always been looney tunes. I think only if you first saw the game when you were 13 that you'd think it was actually dark. It's Big Trouble in Little China: The Game it was never meant to be serious.

The biggest problem with 4 is the 3D didn't actually add anything to the gameplay. MK4 came out after Tekken, Soul Blade, and Virtua Fighter all 3D fighting games where the 3D added on top of the mechanics rather than being eye candy.

Mortal Kombat 1 and 2 were great, it oozed atmosphere and the characters were very interesting.
but then they added robots and too many ninjas and.. bland street stages and no more creepy music.

But yeah, back in the day MK1 and MK2 were enjoyed for more than just the gore. the lore was awesome.

I like the music of MK3 (some great themes like the church) but yes, the games became grittier, darker and less memorable.

Anyway, I was never a big fan of the first MK, but Mortal Kombat 2 was one of the best fighting games of the Mega Drive. On my birthday back then, a lot of kids of the neighbourhood went to my home and we had a blast playing MK2 torunaments. Fun game with an interesting atmosphere and characters. Music was probably better than the arcade version too.
