Some more Heroes with wrong upscale filter.

After finishing last campaign level and playing two small maps after that, I remembered precisely what I liked in H1 over H2. Vancian magic system feels more natural. No mana, knowledge determines how many times in a month (not sure about period) you can cast each spell. Town building is much much faster - no upgrades for creatures, no additional buildings. Town management in H2 on big maps was a real slog (I mostly ignored it unless really necessary). Here it is nicely streamlined. Units of the same type are always unified (no singletone tier 1 nonsence). Half of the art are the same god-tier as in H2 (another half, including units is worse). Castles are more distinct - 4 type of heroes, 4 stats. In H2 this distinctiin is less clear, in H3 - s real mess.

Picrelated - final campaign battle.

I actually found h1 economy quite tight in month 1, if a bit simplistic. The main thing - Warlock and Sorc must find resources to build tier 4 and 5. And they need even more resources for Mage Guild. And there is no Markets to exchange resources or special buildings (besides the mill) that get you some every week. And maps in general are less packed with mines as in h2+. And money is always short - no Town Hall updates, forget about living from 1 or 2 castles.

Idea is exactly the same in h2+, just in h1 you have less options/workarounds, less town management and more action.

I was about the building prices, tier 4 and 5 require 10 of custom resources you don't have (unless on easy) from the start. This is only for Warlock and Sorc and it feels like the foundation of the "might" vs "magic" mechanics implementation.

It is more straightforward in h1 then in h2+, where this idea is buried under piles of details and has less effect on gameplay.

Art and story fro official h1 handbook:

Letters From Lord Ironfist
23rd Day of the Month of the Raven, Common Year 632

To my great and munificent lord, King Ragnar, from his loyal cousin Lord IronFist - Greetings.
It has been thirty days since I crossed through the mysterious gate which opened in the Varnal Hills and thus found myself in this strange and uncharted land. I wish my dear lord and cousin, through this missive, to dispel the ugly rumors about me, which I fear you might believe.

I was deeply shocked, dear cousin, by the attempt of the wizard Guthbert to slay you. I heard that upon the rack of pain, shortly after you had his arms torn from their sockets, that he cried out my name as the one who had paid him. Dear cousin, it has injured me grievously to hear that you believed him. You know my loyalty to you is undying. Even though you took the hand of fair Ewine to be your queen, though I loved her dearly, still it is wrong to think I would wish harm upon you. That wretch Guthbert must have forged my signature to the letter you found in his chambers. As for the satchel of gold bearing my mark, I know not how it came to be in Guthbert’s possession. I believe some dark enemy must have planted it to cast blame upon me for such a dastardly crime.

Please trust me on this.

It is not the worst lore, I quite liked the wordbuilding in mm3-5. Just it must be understood only inside the bounds of each game separately. They never bothered to make it consistent between games. Each game has its own mood and its own art style.

It may be interpreted, as all the events of previous chapters are told by a drunken bard in a starting tavern. So there is no canon and no official chronology. And human Crag Hack just was inpired by the stories about original dwarf hero, who fought Ancients on distant planets.

Replaying Broken Alliance (linkrelated, won't fit into pic - https://i.imgur.com/CdiFnWK.jpg ) in h2. And it feels really different from h1.

Castle development is much slower. Updates for every unit (playing necros and knights) feel tackled on, and also burn a lot of money. In h1 you built it and ready to fight.

Battlefield is bigger, but battles are more samey - I don't remember always covering archers in the corner in h1, it also much harder to kitel on smaller field there. Castle defence without updates is useless (it is deadly in h1).

Creatures art+animation and cd music is absolutely majestic though. And the map is dense .

Interesting. I found Barbarian was very good and has 0 fliers but very strong range units with orcs and trolls. Due to the fact they basically only need ore to get their dwellings you can get big, strong armies much faster than anyone else. This lets you rush the computer and they usually invest all their resources into mages guilds, so once you take their castle you get all that magic for free.

Same situ with knights too actually, but not as OP because their units are generally a lot weaker. But you can usually get all of your dwellings when the computers are still on 3rd/4th dwellings

Serious question: How is this game fun to you?

The swapping between characters is annoying as fuck.

All you do 90% of the time is merging armies, backtracking a lot to get upgrades, upgrading your 5 shitty cities and wait 2 hours until something interesting happens. Maybe I play the game the wrong way?

>How is this game fun to you?

It is not.

"build the train from secondary heroes" style of cyber-athlete competitive HOTA stuff is quite a special thing and not my cup of boomer juice. So I play h1 instead that feels fresh and has absolutely different mechanics from h3. Or play h2 I've spent so many hours with back then on my 486 and that brings those memories (and cd music, cutscenes and PoL campaign I didn't have in rip version). Or play some h4 campaign (never played h3+ much before) just to listen to its music (best in the series btw). Or play h5 to look at the models and animation.

H3 campaigns also worth revisiting from time to time, both OC and SoD are good in their own ways.

For HOTA matches on Jebus Cross template - I suggest watching some matches on heroes3.tv (you won't lose much turning off slav tongue bubbling and shitty music streamers use). I adore the skill they show, and tight matches are really interesting to watch. Just not interested in playing this way myself.

I agree in theory, barbarian indeed need only ore up to tier 5. But I found early game with it much harder than with warlock. No fliers makes it problematic to get mines from archers/orcs/centaurs. With warlock griffins and gargoiles are there on a third day and give instant win over shooter bands. With barb - only wolves are useful, and they always get all hits (so numbers are always low). Ogre-slowpokes are useless outside of the castle, they are poor-mans hydras. And both ogres and trolls are pricy.

I also play on unfamiliar maps so far, so don't do early rushes.

Now playing with warlock agan

Hmm well I would get trolls straight up on turn 3 or so as long as I found an ore pile or two (which is usually really easy) and I would just have an army of orcs, trolls and goblins. With this army comp the computer always attacks the trolls, but because they have good HP and regen every turn I would win almost every fight without any losses.

Yeah you just keep ogres in your base for unexpected attacks. For how much HP they have with how much the cost they are fucking good backup units in a defence.

The warlock units I feel are too weak except for dragons, and dragons are so expensive you aren’t gonna get them usually in the first month. By that time I’d have a huge stack of orcs, trolls and Cyclopes.

Seems that it depends on a map. Played picrelated (Jester, S) with warlock on Normal+Genius. Started in the middle bottom. Got all mines in first three days. Got Hydras on first week. Left 4 hydras at home, successfully rushed Sorc castle on the left with griffins and gargoiles. Got 10 minotaurs from 2 castles income. After that it was easy mod to the end.

With last barb play (different map) - no money for trolls, wolves always being shot, constantly harassed by knights.

It probably depends on a map, with a single ore mine and no ore lying around - barb is a hard mode. Overall I found H1 maps are much less densely packed with mines and resources. Lack of roads also makes it harder to rush on a new map. It feels like the exact opposite of Jebus Cross.

but knight is okay in H2
you're supposed to play knight as a rushdown / double-build town, then it performs rather well
in contrast with H1, you can split stacks into multiples, so an opener with double-shooting archers works rather swell
plus H2 pronounces the might hero advantage somewhat because each point of advantage in attack or defense increases your damage and mitigation relatively by 10%, not 5%, like in HoMM3
Knight also has one of the two Ultra Fast units in the game (the other being the Phoenix) which is an advantage in prospective hit'n'run tactics and the large-scale battles

>> No.6195210

>>6193636
Yeah don’t buy the the wolves into your army for that reason. You’ll have enough money for trolls orcs and goblins. The wolves you use later or on defence, but ogres will defend really well.

I agree that warlock can be super strong, but they are so resource dependant I find it usually hard to get those powerful units as early as you did. I just find I get more consistently good results with barbarian because ore is easy to get and the AI always goes for your trolls, which with the big HP and regen make for super good tanks which, especially if you get some defence for your hero.

Later on when you get teleport you can also wreak havoc with the cyclopses or ogres. For a final unit cyclopses are cheap and you get 4 a week so you get big stacks faster.

Without wolves - I just haven't had enough overall HP to actually win battles. But you obviously correct in other parts - with enough ore and money barb is a good choice for early rushes. And that style of gameplay is more refreshing, than growing enough dragons and faceroll the map with them.

Picrelated - epic artifact used against me in endgame on Jester. Was surprised to see 350 hits from a single lightning on my troops.

Hmm, maybe I need to play H1 again - I haven't played in a year or so but I remember the barb being the strongest for me. Another plus for them is they are one of the easiest to level up the mages guild, since your dwellings require comparitively little luxury resources.

Haha - every time I get the ultimate artifact I get the book of knowledge. Which I think is the weakest of all the ultimates in H1 because you can get by very comfortably with just 4-6 knowledge.

I think I'm gonna have to play H1 again soon and re-asses the factions (I haven't played in quite a while). My current rating goes Barb > Warlock > Knight > Sorc.

Just did a game with Barb with excellent results. Map was Town Haul, which I never played before but it was a good layout. Not necessarily easy for barb because the wood/ore are right in the centre of the map with a lot of mobs in the way, whereas the luxuries are around the outside of the map near the starting castles. But I just picked up one ore pile at the start (gave 14) and that was enough to get trolls on turn 4. Then the computer proceeded to impale itself on my army and once it was worn down taking the castles was easy.

Ended up winning in Month 2, Week 3. Got Genie rank (pic related). I played on normal vs 3 Genius AI's, but honestly I don't know if the 'Genius' setting makes any difference, it still did the usual stupid stuff like casting blind on a monster and then immediately attack it, breaking the blind. I'm gonna try Warlock next and see how I go.

And here are the results from my Warlock game. Same conditions as last time but did this on Neighbors, another map I didn't know but turned out to be very good for Warlock. Completed this one in 67 days, but with a lot of luck. 3 or 4 mobs joined me early on allowing me to get all the luxuries I needed so I got dragons in week 4.

This map was super good for Warlock because all the players are separated by teleporters which are guarded my lvl 6 mobs. So you have all the time you need to get to that strong end-game state.

It's hard to say which faction is better - Warlock of Barbarian. I'm still leaning towards barbarian because they can thrive in almost any game and have a very strong early game (which is in my opinion the most important part). But on the right map when you are well separated from the enemy and have enough luxury resources Warlock are definitely the strongest.

I'm gonna play a few maps on hard difficulty next but I expect barbarian will handle that much better than warlock because they don't need the starting resources as much.

My highest one - picrelated, the same warlock on Jester.

Barb really lacks fliers. Warlocks level and level 3 fliers help a in both early game and castle attacks. I agree with Barb > Knight > Sorc

>> No.6197691

>>6197663
Yeah, I agree Barb lacks fliers. The first thing I noticed using warlock was that it was much easier to handle ranged mobs, which is a big plus early on. But warlocks have very little range. Centaurs are okay but they get gunned down constantly to the point you never have many, making them almost worthless after the beginning. Personally I prefer having the range advantage.

Another edge barbs have is the natural path finding ability, making it much quicker to navigate the rough terrain, and any movement bonus is a huge plus in this game. The warlocks scouting bonus is okay, but really doesn’t help much at all. Barbs also getting natural high attack is very good, and synergises well with their range superiority. Warlocks high spellpower is nice for doing big damage lightning bolts, but not much else in H1 since berserk is usually better and works just as well with one spell power. High attack is usually gonna give you more damage than one good lightning bolt per round.

Just got my ass brought to me by AI Sorc in my Barb game. I had 16 ogres, 25 orcs and 5 wolves (all trolls we killed in previous battle). Sorceress rushes to my castle with 2 phoenices and 40 rouges. Hint: get a spellbook even for barb.

Phoenices were 2 ogres hits away from being annihilated. But those hits never came. Sorc uses paralize on ogres every move (no retaliation, spell removed on attack, but turn missed), finish orcs and wolves by birds, then together with rouges finish ogres with remaining paralize and lightnings.

Dont have a pic, that was on a phone, to my surprise found, that H1+Magic Dosbox works okay on low-end 5" phone.

Check out my crowning achievement in pic related. I just did Jolly Roger with Barb on hard difficulty, 3 genius AI and finished in 41 days - first try too. This map is insanely hard, the computers must start with huge resources or extra buildings because Sorc had phoenixes on turn 5 or 6 or something.

I feel your pain. I get drawn back into H3 every now and again but eventually realize the kingdoms are basically synonymous and I spend several month turns micro managing army transfer when only 2-5 midgame battles decide the entire game. The AI is terrible while still earning more money and units than you even as you steal castles from them early and often. Moreover whenever I do have a battle that's nearly even and falls to the RNG gods, I can't save it and share it with my homm3 friends.

I get more behind playing single player Eador New Horizons now. There's a lot more variety in how you can play: Good or Evil, Scout/Warrior/Wiz/Commander, different level up skills and promotions, and all your units level up and promote so they matter as well as carry a maintenance cost. It's a step closer to a 4x game. The tactical depth in combat is just very satisfying.
