My Dad threw out my Dreamcast when I went to college. Of course by then the laser was failing and it shut it self off from overheating every 5 minutes.

Is it true that that by the time they start doing that, they're unsalvagable and should just be thrown out anyway, even with gdemus?

>dying laser
no biggie, just gdemu

>overheating
that’s more serious, at that point just get another Dreamcast and keep the old one for parts

Vast majority of heat generated should be from the power supply. If mine overheated I'd replace it. Still, 5 minutes? That's either a shitload of dust/grime or an actual electrical fault.

That probably wasn't why it was resetting. They get corrosion on these bigass pins that iirc the mainboard plugs directly into the power supply with and that causes intermittent resets or freezes.

It was sitting idle for quite a few periods so I guess it was dust buildup. Still, coulda sold it not working on eBay for like 30 bucks

That an easy fix?

Sometimes what would happen is the battery would leak all over the internals and cause electrical gremlins and shortages.

Yeah you just clean the pins

>>6167187
Dreamcasts just have button cell batteries. I've never seen one catastrophically leak

Chinks make Dreamcast power replacement boards, how good they are I dunno-

I bought a replacement gdrom on ebay works just fine, for the heating problem you could just get a pico psu, real easy mod just take the power supply out no soldering required. Dreamcast are faulty but easy to fix and have cheap parts
