These communities have a lot of weight in the retro/rom hacking/translation scene. Kurt Kalata and HG101 in particular as he's been around as long as the emulation and fan translation scene online itself really. Kurt had some of the first big fan sites for Castlevania and other series online before he even started HG101.

Basically what I am saying is these communities tend to be able to scare others into shunning you as well and when those same people are the main ones who consume your translations then it can certainly cause problems.

Because "Trans" or "Transgender" is the proper academic term (or a shortening of it) and 'Newhalf' is not, it's a slang term. It doesn't necessarily have the negative baggage 'tranny' now does in the West but it really isn't a positive term either. Comedians and such use it when doing bits about trannys, as an example.

Newhalf literally referring to the person being half of both genders, their 'old half' or original gender and their 'new half' of the gender they are transitioning to. Even if it isn't seen as offensive like tranny in Japan, the meaning of it itself is a concept that would highly offend current Westerns transgenders who believe they are full the other sex regardless of the physical body they were born in. Any suggestion otherwise as the term newhalf insinuates would be seen as transphobic in English speaking counties

Aside from the correlation between newhalf and tranny, does the context of the sentence appear self-denigrating or is the character just being colloquial?

If the character was saying newhalf solely to imply their quote unquote transition, then I think tranny is the wrong term to use. Transexual would work just fine.

If the character is using newhalf to refer to themselves in a quote unquote negative way, then I would say to use tranny.

Those are a couple I've seen. There's one guy insisting "shemale" would be better, which is weird because it's actually a more offensive term. Some people suggested crossdresser, which is alright, but doesn't capture the meaning of newhalf or the original line all the way though.

There was a guy who used to write reviews there that posted here a few times about it. He said in the last few years trannys have overrun the forums and taken over and Kurt and the other admins are 100% behind them. Any who aren't are disposed of eventually, as this anon was. He didn't even say anything "transphobic", he was let go because he called out on particular tranny for totally unrelated shit and for inserting his politics and the fact he's trans in ever review he wrote for the site. He was banned for creating a 'hostile environment' for "other users" and making them "uncomfortable".

He subsequently had some of his reviews removed and rewritten by said tranny, lol. He also said it would take forever to get Kurt to post a piece because he would nitpick over the most autistic shit like word choice and sentence flow and will just keep sending it back. He said Kurt got pissed one day and just said "Forget it, I'll fix it for you" and posted a half-rewritten review days later (though he did still credit the guy)

Tranny is slang and Newhalf is slang so I don't see the problem with correlating the two even if it's not a perfect translation. Kurt saying "It used Newhalf but tranny is still a shitty word to translate it as" is acknowledging that newhalf itself would be offensive, at least to his sensibilies.

I will say though to avoid all the bullshit he should've just used "trans" or something

But 5 of those people who find them because of the attention you give them results in 5 more followers, and eventually, 5 more people just like them.
