Ys 1-4 on PC Engine are fucking great. I first played the remake of Ys Books I & II on PSP and the music drew me in. The PC Engine version's soundtrack is better in my opinion though.

totally agree with you 1-4 are amazing. 4 is one of the best games i got ahold of later in life that took me right back to 13 years old. Also i really feel that the cutscenes in Ys 3 add a lot to the atmosphere of the game where in a lot of games i never gave a shit. funny story. i used to rent the copy of Ys 3 on snes from the local shop. in my twenties at a party i found out the save files on the game we’re from these two brothers that live near me. we still hang out and play old shit together now

I've completed Origin and Oath in Felghana. Which version of 1 should I start with?

>stock royale at extremely low res
Anon you can do better than that. At minimum you should change the two blur9 passes to blur5 passes, which will reign in that terrible bloom shitting up your white text to somewhat reasonable levels.

The royale xm29 shader already uses blur5 passes though. I play at low resolution because I use Integer Scaling and I have a 1080p monitor.

Jump to the next integer, you'll only lose a trivial amount of vertical screenspace and it'll look much, much better.

It's possible I overleveled for the boss because it took me 4 tries to beat him, but damn that was cool. Onto Book II it is, after just 4 hours and 45 minutes of Book I (of which 15 minutes were due to having to backtrack all the way to floor 11th just to get a fucking amulet).

>> No.6164436

>>6164231
Exactly. 1600x1080 (only losing 60 lines from the top and bottom, well within overscan) gives you a 64% larger image and lets the shader display more detailed subpixels.

>> No.6164460

>>6164436
Do you happen to know if there's a way for screenshots to come out without garbage pixels on them? (See the blurry section at the top of the image here >>6164231) Or even better, that the pixels don't look blurry at all, as if I was taking the screenshot on an actual 1440p monitor.

RA screenshots only display the rendered screenspace when you have GPU screenshots enabled, which is required to capture the shader. As far as I know, the only way is to manually trim the image.

It varies. Most console games from that era set the important UI elements inward with a lot of wiggle room so they wouldn't get cut off. +60 (1200 - 1080 = 120 / 2 = 60) would be perfectly centered, but rarely, some games are set low, some are set high, so for perfect screenshots you may need to make minor adjustments in either direction per game.

As someone who's played the Famicom version, Vampire isn't hard, but the Mantis and the boss who hops around constantly are fucking bullshit. Really makes me appreciate invincibility frames in other games.

Huh, looks like balance is pretty different in that version of the game. Usually in Ys I, level 10 is the max, which you'd reach well before Dark Fucked, and it offers better max HP than that.

6169374

So Book II. More environments, more adventure-like gameplay requiring you to find items to progress, these really feel like adventure games with RPG elements on top. Leveling up makes a huge difference, and it never is the tedious slog of turn-based RPGs for small gains: a level up makes the difference between having to play REALLY well and playing well.

There was a fucking retard in charge of this game who thought it made sense that the music would completely drown out whatever the hell the characters are saying.
